To find Andy Burnham’s sudden rise to the top odd?

A few weeks ago, I’d never heard of this man. A few weeks ago, he wasn’t even an MP.

Yet suddenly, he’s everywhere and going to be our next prime minister? What qualifies him for this role? It seems that all the Labour MPs love him. Why?

The whole situation is very odd to me… I’m not sure it’ll do Labour any favors at all.

There's this thing called the internet...

EmmaOvary · 29/06/2026 19:34

First post nails it. OP, Chat GPT is your friend here.

Okiedokie123 · 29/06/2026 19:34

Yabu. He’s been tipped as a likely future PM for years.

REDB99 · 29/06/2026 19:35

You had never heard of him? Anyone with a passing interest in politics knows who he is. He wasn’t an MP because he was Mayor of Manchester.

Namechangee11 · 29/06/2026 19:35

How have you never heard of him? That's on you
..

ilovesooty · 29/06/2026 19:35

If you'd never heard of him before I find that strange. He's been around a long time and has years of experience of being an MP and has held posts in Cabinet.

I think the op knows that given that she has posted on the internet to ask for other people opinions.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 29/06/2026 19:37

My 10 yo son was talking to me about him. You are less politically aware than a 10yo.

I saw him buying wine in Morrisons a few years ago so he seems alright to me. I’m no politics expert though.

EveryKneeShallBow · 29/06/2026 19:40

Nevertheless, I agree his sudden Messianic elevation is odd. It’s going to be a hard one to live up to.

Topseyt123 · 29/06/2026 19:44

He was an MP and even a cabinet minister in several departments some years ago under the last Labour government. He then became Mayor of Manchester so could no longer be an MP.

He was hardly an unknown. I'm really surprised you have never heard of him. You must have worked hard at that.

redsunsets · 29/06/2026 19:45

He ran for labour ship twice in the past and failed both times. He's now seen by the PLP as the Messiah to save the country which must be a reflection of lack of talent in the PLP.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/06/2026 19:45

This is his third attempt at becoming Leader of the Labour Party. He and his team must have been drumming up support from MPs for months and months.

TheyGrewUp · 29/06/2026 19:46

The far left want a kindred spirit. That's why. Except for being Mayor of Manchester, what exactly has he done? Has he ever had a job outside politics?

I am sure he will be remembered for a very long time and will have greater impact than a lettuce.

SapphireOpal · 29/06/2026 19:46

You'd never heard of Andy Burnham?!

PistachioTiramisu · 29/06/2026 19:47

Mark my words - he will be even worse than Starmer. A very dangerous, left wing fanatisict.

StopMeIfYouHaveHeard · 29/06/2026 19:47

You are absolutely right to be suspicious OP and the faux “you could just google him” posts are tedious.

He’s clearly being installed to continue what Tony Blair started.

I wonder how long before we’re involved in another war in the middle east? Not long, I’d hazard.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/06/2026 19:47

I’m very pleased with your sudden interest in politics OP.

Just proves you can start with no knowledge at all and educate yourself along the way.

GingerBeverage · 29/06/2026 19:47

He’s a viral meme.

He was Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Health Secretary years ago when he was last an MP.

harrassedmum · 29/06/2026 19:49

How have you never heard of him 😂 he’s been an MP for years and more qualified than a lot of people in politics

Badbadbunny · 29/06/2026 19:49

No worse than Sunak who had never even been an MP and then started getting ministerial positions straight away in his first term as an MP, then became Chancellor, literally from nowhere, and then pushed out Boris to become PM. A meteroric rise from nowhere.

I think we all know there are hidden people with real power behind the scenes in both major parties who "make things happen".

At least Burnham had previously been an MP for many years, had experience as Mayor of Manchester, and has been a visible face in politics for 20 years or more.

emmetgirl · 29/06/2026 19:49

Just because you hadn’t heard of him doesn’t mean nobody else has. I remember him being an MP prior to being Mayor of Manchester. He was quite high profile and if I remember correctly he was a minister in the last Labour government.
I’d say you’re probably in a minority.
Nice try at a bit of faux outrage though.

JuliaBraverman · 29/06/2026 19:50

As someone online said….Starmer was knifed in the back for a black T-shirt and a pair of eyelashes.
