What have I just seen in the sky?

Not great photos. I didn't get my phone in time to get the v formation but did get one of one that stopped moving for a little bit.

About 20 small white dots went accross the sky just now. They were in a V formation like geese but way too high for geese. They flew one way then sharply changed by 90 degrees apart from 2 which stayed in the same place for a little bit and then followed the others. They must have been going at some speed.

Nothing on flight radar (although I know not everything shows). No noise. No vapor trails.

We do get jets over but these didn't look or sound or move like that. We are also on the flight path for a small commercial airport but the planes are always much lower than whatever these were.

I thought maybe helium balloons but they were really high and like I said there were about 20 of them. If they were somehow all attached and being blown about (there isn't even a breeze on the ground but I know that it can get windy up there) why would 2 just freeze when the others moved?

Geese can fly up to around 10,000 feet, even in normal circumstances (ie not crossing mountains). Do you think they were higher than that?

SerendipityJane · 28/06/2026 16:42

Drones ?

Mumwithagreenhouse · 28/06/2026 16:44

That’s Starlink’s satellites. You’ll see them at night going across in one long line

MrsShawnHatosy · 28/06/2026 16:46

Swans? They normally cruise at 2,000 to 8,000 feet, but can go as high as 27,000 feet.

I think so. I've just googled what else flies at that height and I'd say it was higher than 10,000. I'm not saying they don't but I've also never seen geese bank that quickly or appear to stay still.

I dont think so. They were in a V shape but not equally spaced and like I said, banked sharply.

Too high. I did wonder that so googled and found out that people race them so it isn't inconceivable there would be 20 all tightly together but it was too high.

Military aircraft - as you say, not all appear on flight radar. Flying in a vic formation and banking to complete a coordinated turn. Lots of airshows coming up over summer...

I didnt know that. That's mad! What business have they got being that high! 🤣 Off to google although do they have the ability to change direction so sharply?

Military or extraterrestrial.

I think most likely but I've never seen anything like that. We have a few military bases by us and are used to getting all sorts flying over. Generally noisily!

It was literally a sudden 90 degree turn although I appreciate that it might just be that it looked that way because of how far away they were. And 2 just stopped moving altogether for maybe a minute max.

They do it to avoid obstacles or catch favourable winds.

Gotta be aliens then tbh

I think this is what the OP is hinting at. But of course it’s not Aliens.

If I thought it was aliens, I'd have said I thought it was aliens. I do not think it is aliens.

I didnt realise I couldn't ask about something I didn't understand without being accused of being a conspiracy theorist.

In fact, you'll see that I am open to it being military or swans. 🤣

Although tbh, no one can say aliens don't exist.

Probably flying at that altitude to reduce their acoustic signature given that it's a Sunday. Much louder when they fly closer to the ground and, of course, more entertaining for the crowd. I bet that's it. If they were being deployed they wouldn't be quiet either. I think it's rehearsing formations.

Settlersa · 28/06/2026 17:03

Oh blimey, I was looking at the circle you had drawn round them, wondering what it was Blush

I'd be really worried if I saw that in the sky tbh!

I've seen something very like this fly over the house, but at night and quite low (at least it looked low to me). Lights in a v-formation. No sound at all. No trails. Moved slowly and silently over the house, about 3am. I assumed military, perhaps drone, but as it passed over the house, it was HUGE. I think the military bases around here (not very close) probably have regulations about flying silently over populated areas at night. But I've never heard of aircraft that silent.

I've also seen the satellite lines, in early evening, much higher, much faster, in a line, not v-formation.

My guess would be US or UK military, drones or something, or Chinese drones.

They dont normally care if it's Sunday or not. We get them occasionally when they are clearly flying much, much too low and make the house rattle. The local Facebook page goes mental when that happens (although it can be a bit scary depending on the type of plane if I'm honest). 🤣

We do get some really cool ones fly over though sometimes.

I'd like to see the satellites but this didn't look anything like the pictures I've seen of them so I doubt it's that.

Yeah, it's the silence that is odd for me too.

Chariots of the gods man! They’re dropping out of the sky like flies! They taught the Incas all they know!

There's some weird stuff going on as discussed in Congress that couldn't be explained. Freaks me out and I'm in the Ɓrian Cox camp with Aliens don't exist. Still doesn't help it make sense. Not many planes can stop mid air and too expensive to have a V formation of them.

I wonder if there's new tech no one knows about as its got to be something?

We have military plains and helicopter and they really don't care about noise. Chinook helicopters regularly three times the high of the house and had a bomber circling extremely low as well.

TheIdlerReturns · 28/06/2026 17:22

Satellites. Sadly not aliens but I'm holding out hope.

I would not be at all surprised if there's a lot of silent, military tech that we know nothing about. And never will until the files are declassified 50 years from now.

Remember the Chinese spy balloons appearing over the US and (I think?) Norway? Ordinary people had no idea they were up there until something went wrong with them. The US military pretended they had to investigate, but don't tell me they didn't already know about them!
