AIBU to think a tip worker’s comment was borderline?

Taking a carfull to the tip with dh.

I threw a couple of sofa cushions in the wrong bit and was very apologetic to the man, who came along with his long hook to get them out. The staff are all quite loud and jokey there.

I was crawling into the boot on all 4s to get the rest - so my arse poking out. The tip man was being jovial and told DH, loudly, " you ought to give that wife of yours a good hiding". I think the cushions were heavy.

Aibu this was particularly inappropriate/weird)?

Hugely inappropriate and not in the slightest bit funny. Did either of you say anything to him?
He’d have earned an “I beg your pardon” from me in my sternest loud voice.

Justwonderingifthisisnormal · 26/06/2026 11:52

Sounds like him and his attitude belongs in the tip!

Neanderthal. I wouldn't have given him any oxygen.

concertinacornflake · 26/06/2026 11:58

The comment was out of order.

But was it worth saying anything? Potentially not.

8TinyToeBeans · 26/06/2026 12:00

I think that would warrant maybe a "I'd like to see him try" then we'd probably have a laugh at his expense when we were driving home. Nothing to be gained from getting into it.

Lobelia123 · 26/06/2026 12:02

I think there are more important things to get upset about. If you get irritated and go over any random and gormless twit's passing remarks youll lead a very frustrated and unhappy life.

Alittlefrustrated · 26/06/2026 12:12

He was obviously joking and making light of your mistake/the situation. Your prominent arse adding to the humour from his view point. So, whilst jokes about giving a good hiding aren't acceptable these days, on balance I'd let this go.

More or less exactly what I was about to type - jeez, lighten up a bit! He obviously didn't mean that he should beat you. I miss the days of banter...

NCOneDayOnly · 26/06/2026 12:30

I’d have given him both barrels. ‘Jokes’ about men hitting women don’t sit well with me. There are similar misogynistic pricks at my local tip too. That’s why they’re working at the tip, presumably, and not carrying out anything that involves much in the way of intelligence.

MilkyLeonard · 26/06/2026 12:39

It sounds like working with trash is exactly where he belongs.

Me too. Life used to be so much nicer & less full of angst. I'm glad I was born when
i was (69 funnily enough 🤣🤣)

Well I'd rather spend a day with them & their banter than you & your nasty judgemental attitude.

LOL 😂

Yeah we're about the same age, with the same sense of humour I see 😆

topcat2014 · 26/06/2026 12:49

How many airs and graces are you expecting from Tip Man?

WalterMittysPuppet · 26/06/2026 12:52

It was a poorly judged comment and inappropriate, but most likely said with entirely non-threatening (and outdated) intentions.

The last time someone said something similar to my husband I said, "He'll have to catch me first."

Why did he say this? it doesn't even make sense? Confused

He shouldn't have said it, but I'm not sure what you can do about it.

PattyBladelll · 26/06/2026 12:54

Why are there SO many threads recently all along the same theme - My husband/brother/partner/this random man said something weird/sexual/jokey, is it inappropriate? There seems to be a new one every day

Same here. Life was much less complicated when no one took offence at the slightest thing and just gave as good as they got.

ThatJadeLion · 26/06/2026 12:57

He didn't mean it literally. It's like when someone says "I could murder" so and so.

WilfredsPies · 26/06/2026 12:58

@NCOneDayOnly What other occupations do you look down your nose at?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 26/06/2026 13:00

I would absolutely follow that up. It’s the everyday low level stuff that should be easy to complain about.

You know that thing about when there is a broken car abandoned it encourages vandalism, but if everything is neat and tidy people keep it that way? This is the same.

Edited - this is what I mean. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory

Sort out the low level stuff because you can. Hopefully some of that won’t make it to the higher level where Police and courts aren’t needed.

True. There are a lot of women offended at what men are saying - and maybe some of the annoyance is justified, but they just run onto here to post about it, and do naff-all about it at the time.

'Cheeky bastard, I'll give YOU a good hiding!' would have been a suitable retort. Easy to say after the event I know, but why are none of these woman speaking up at the time, like, at all, EVER?!

Tootles1 · 26/06/2026 13:06

For those judging the intelligence of tip workers, you don’t know their backgrounds. There could be lots of reasons why they work there and lack of intelligence not being one of them. Never judge a book by its cover.

Some reasons could be because they get paid about £36,000 a year for a 4 and a half day week, (finish at midday on Friday/33-34 hours a week,) with 5 weeks holiday (plus all the bank holidays.) Also, they have an excellent council pension, and for the most part, the job is a doddle. They're not daft, they know they've got it good, and they're laughing at people who look down on them.
