Anyone else in the South East worried about Andy Burnham bringing in a land tax?

With it looking likely that Andy Burnhan will be the next PM, I was interested to see if anyone else in London / the south east were worried about potential tax raises specifically around the land tax rather than stamp duty ?

A lot of my friends who live locally are worrying that he will make the land tax for the South East so high in proportion to other areas of the UK that it will be financially very difficult to afford but then also extremely difficult to sell!!

BTW we have very standard house and garden but we live in an expensive area

I would still like to know what substantive aspect of LVT you think is unfair.

You don't have to agree in a debate, but you do have to engage.

From the outset, you largely sidestepped the points I raised while expecting me to answer your questions. That's not what I consider a good-faith or productive debate. Not sure what your agenda is but I would put money on it not being:

Why not trust that no one is trying to screw you over? Perhaps you will thrive economically if the country finds its financial feet again, and be better off overall. Isn’t that the most important thing?

one of the funniest (and most stupid) things I read this months.

Do you want the list how much Labour screwed me in the last two years? pretty much destroyed everything I've been working for in the last 15 years.

I wonder if this poster is a member of some online campaign by Labour
kind of "don't worry, be happy, everything's gonna be fine"

Can"t really see another contender, can you?

Hung parliament. Ideally with Tory being the largest party, but I could do with no majority and no coalition.

You’re not alone, sadly. Hence Starmer is out.

I have always been a floating voter, and have voted a combination of LD and conservative over the years (LD for the past ten)… Labour never stand a chance in our constituency so it’s a wasted vote.. hence I voted LD in recent elections.

I will be voting conservative at the next election. All the older generation warned us that within a couple of years Labour would find a way to whack up taxes, increase benefits and worsen public services… and they were right.

Only particular posters. A large number on the thread simply object to factors such as change or the end of a particularly good deal for some. Or they don’t like LVT, or Labour, or AB. Or the idea of paying more tax.

None of this is equal to a reason why LVT is a bad idea.

This poster is keenly aware that the Conservatives had 14 years to do better, and failed.

Do show me where I have sidestepped your points please. All I have done is refused to explain the Laffer Curve for others - but you have not done so either.

Please provide a list of other points that have not been engaged and by all means don’t let me stop you explaining the Laffer Curve.

Well
Ill look at policies and determine whether they are right ( imo and with stats in mind ) for the country and fair

Labours Willy one was pathetic
Labours support of Israel is misguided and quite frankly horrific
Burnhams IHT one to replace paying for care is a good one
Labours tax on education is vindictive
Burnhams LVT one as it currently stands is equally misguided and vindictive

It’ll get him votes because most people in this country can’t see past their own lives and
we saw that with the education tax and what a balls up that has been.

There are, as I said, many pages of stats. Examples given here of other countries have been debunked. Someone mentioned New York… debunked and irrelevant
Someone mentioned a Scandinavian policy ….debunked and irrelevant
The numbers to be affected and the areas and property types including our heritage assets have been posted on here.

You don’t have to agree with anything but the facts are out there
and the policy stinks

I agree. I’m done with them and Burnham is just going to make things worse with a bunch of ideologically driven, economic illiterates… because that’s all Labour have left.

ETA: I’m still glad I voted LD last time in order to back a change of govt (Labour won’t win where we are). I think that Labour needed a dose of reality for a while rather than being the smug back seat drivers when conservatives were in power. But they had 14 years to prepare for government and have been woeful, I’ve lost faith and AB is just going to worsen division.

There has been more than that read back. I think you’re blanking info as you did for well respected supply side economists.

Still all sadly vague.

I lived in America for 15 years and know a bit about LVT in NY, for example. Do tell us more about why it is bad, because somehow I missed that bit.

Nah. And there really aren’t many well respected supply side economists any more. AI informs me that in recent surveys only about 1% ( that is not a typo) of economists believed in supply side economics, including the infamous Laffer Curve. 55-65% believe in incentivisation to some degree, and the rest do not.

You may be interested to know that three 21st century Nobel laureates in Economics are amongst the most ardent critics of supply side economics on the face of the Earth:

Joseph Stiglitz (2001), Paul Krugman (2008) and Angus Deaton (2015).

That’s great. It doesn’t go against the earlier point that economics has a range of views.

And your summary of the reasons why people are against isn’t what has been said either.

I’d need to see how things go up to the GE but I’m favouring the Conservatives atm
Tbh no one’s great

You don"t seriously think they can win a GE? Or do you mean favouring them with your vote? Smart conservatives IMO will defect to Reform, KB is good at talking but there is little substance there, all of it is just Reform policy.

Reform with Restore as main opposition is more likely than Cons as largest party, they are hated now, KS only won to get rid of them, large sections of that Labour vote will now switch to Reform IMO.
