Are people getting worse/what is happening?

All I keep reading about daily now is another gang rape, murder, stabbings and unspeakable, evil things being done to children, even babies. It seems to have got worse over the year, things that were quite rare are now becoming commonplace, why, what’s happening in the world?

My dd is only 7 and i’m becoming scared for her future

Please tell me that the vast majority of people are still good and decent

It's because gore sells really. I don't think stats actually suggest increase in these crimes. But they generate clicks and readership

smallglassbottle · 19/06/2026 14:04

It's always gone on. Epstein and his horrible friends and acquaintances were at it for decades, we just didn't know about it. Being cruel is fun to some people. I'll stick with a cup of tea and Instagram for my thrills thanks very much.

DoggerelBank · 19/06/2026 14:04

The vast majority of people are still as decent as they ever were, But social media a) whips up a small minority of people to behave far worse than they used to and b) amplifies the horrific stories so they are more in our face than they ever used to me.
Stepping away from social media and the news from time to time helps me to feel more positive about the world.

TigerRag · 19/06/2026 14:05

I don't think there's an increase. It's more being exposed to news 24/7

Alittlebitofthebauble · 19/06/2026 14:05

We just hear more about the bad stuff what with the nature of 24 hour news nowadays. But yeah, I too struggle hearing about it all. Never watch the news, but have a bad habit of reading articles on my phone.

There are plenty of lovely people around, but it's not news if someone helps someone across the road or talks someone down from a bridge or whatever. Well, it sometimes is, but you know what I mean!

All you can do is either distract yourself or channel your caring nature into either your job or some volunteer work helping others. Improve your small corner of the world. 🙂

Crocsarentslippers · 19/06/2026 14:08

It's like saying you could leave your door unlocked and kids could go anywhere in the 60's & 70's free from harm.

No, you just didn't hear about what evil things befell them and theft from houses.

More sensational reporting and gory details for engagement means we are led to believe the world is on fire.

EverythingGolden · 19/06/2026 14:15

Crime rates are generally on the decrease. But that won’t create online interest or fuel political agendas. There are plenty of terrible crimes from any era of history you care to choose. I just learned of a terrible double child murder very local to me I was unaware of as it happened in the fifties.

Monty36 · 19/06/2026 14:17

It is because we have some unpleasant world leaders. And much stems from the top.

Sartre · 19/06/2026 14:18

The millennial thread on here made me think of awful shit that happened in the news when I was growing up. The things that really stuck with me were obviously the biggies - 9/11 and 7/7 but also Holly and Jessica, Millie Dowler, Maddie McCann, Sarah Payne. Also always think about poor Andrew Gosden. I think child abductions seemed more common then, probably because kids actually went out.

JustaDream · 19/06/2026 14:19

The news isn't meant to make you feel good. Stay off of it and live your life.

Agreed. I think cyber crime is understandably rising but many others are decreasing because everyone avoids leaving the house.

Numbchill · 19/06/2026 14:19

The 30 year old who threw the 3 year old in the crocodile enclosure was on a learning disability day out apparently. A lot of these issues can be traced to the lack of mental health services.

Shortandtothepoint · 19/06/2026 14:20

The news progs are 90% bad news.
They always have some small positive story at the end (as if that helps) 😏. Limit your exposure is my advice.

Soujourn · 19/06/2026 14:22

I think people are as awful as they’ve always been they just have more opportunities to exhibit it now via social media.

Hideawaysomewherenice · 19/06/2026 14:27

But i’m reading about gang rapes almost daily now, I don’t remember anything about that growing up or even 6 years ago

MyrtleLion · 19/06/2026 14:28

Crime rates have dropped dramatically over the last 30 years as shown by this graph, from this source: https://policinginsight.com/feature/analysis/most-crime-has-fallen-by-90-in-30-years-so-why-does-the-public-think-its-increased/

But people think it’s worse than it is.

Because nobody talked about it. You may have been sheltered from the news as a child, but it focused on individual child abductions and/or murder, not on gang-rapes because the children involved were described as “prostitutes” or considered to be “bad girls” who got in with “the wrong crowd”. Attitudes towards violence against women and girls have completely changed in the last 30 years.

Changed for the negative?

I think the crimes against our children are being reported more. I do think there has been a massive rise in violence/sex crimes against females and I also fear for my 7yr old dd way more than i did with my much older sons.

dannyufcfan · 19/06/2026 14:35

Trying watching less news.

Tonissister · 19/06/2026 14:36

It's always happened. We just have a relentless m edia stream 24/7 these days. And more things are considered evil now than they used to be. Even in my lifetime. I remember when Rolling Stone Bill Wyman in his 40s was all over the news with his 13 year old girlfriend, later his wife, Mandy Smith. He was considered utterly cool. She was considered a wild child not a victime of abuse.

Roomonthe3rdfloor · 19/06/2026 14:36

I think its always been there sadly. Its just more common it’s in the news and on social media today. “Back in the day” it was more common abuse was covered up or ignored.

I don’t think I started watching or taking interest in the news or world affairs until I was in my late twenties so I was totally oblivious to some things.

Yes totally, it’s this aspect, is it all the horrific porn? Something isn’t right

I think sexual offences have risen.
I know that there is less stigma in reporting the crime but I feel like it’s also a cultural shift.

Historical Data: In the early 2000s, police recorded around 50,000 to 60,000 sexual offences annually. 1]
Sharp Increase: Recorded rates have surged dramatically. Police recorded 209,079 sexual offences and roughly 71,667 rape offences in the most recent annual reporting periods, which reflects an almost sixfold increase in rape reports since 2002/03. 1]

England and Wales sexual offences 2025| Statista

In 2024/25, there were 209,556 sexual offences recorded by the police in England and Wales, an increase when compared with the previous reporting year and a peak for this type of crime.
