To let my 7 year old stay up to watch the England game?

9pm kick off tonight, the first England game of the World Cup.

I have some great memories from the World Cup when I was a child. It’s once every four years…

Should I, or is it ridiculous?

11 year old wanted to so we agreed on the understanding no funny business getting up tomorrow! 6 year old doesn't have a clue about it thankfully as I wouldn't want her up til 11pm!

DS11 just got into bed and is listening to his Harry Kane audiobook. I’m the one buzzing who won’t be able to sleep now!

My husband wasn't allowed to stay up to watch the Moon Landing in 1969. He was 8. I was very surprised when he told me this - it was such an incredible moment in human history, unprecedented, and his parents would not give way. No leeway at all.

To be honest, it was a real bore! In 1969 it was in black and white, on very small TVs and an appalling picture. It was hours from the Eagle landing and Neil Armstrong walking out onto the Moon with the TV pundits really struggling to fill those hours! We went to bed at about 1.30am, having waited for ages, so we missed it, in our defence, we were very newly married and could think of better ways to spend our time!

Mine aren’t. Let’s see how far we get… but defo a semi final and beyond they can stay up but I’ll keep them off school honestly (don’t tell Bridget Philipson!)

So many girls are into football and play football yet my girl gets comments from boys who don't believe she plays. Just stupid.

I hope she reminds them of the superiority of the record of the women compared to the men!

No chance. I'm teaching my children than 11 millionaires kicking a ball around isn't really worthy of our attention and we'll be reading National Geographic instead. If they really want they can find out the score at school.

Lol 😂 You sound a bundle of fun! And no way will you turn your kids off football if they’re interested.

Of course you're not, schools are buzzing with world cup fever.

I would imagine that Primary schools will be using the World Cup as a resource to teach some Geography, sport science, languages etc. children learn better when they're not being overtly taught!

Why oh why did you even click on this thread, let alone bother to post?

An attempt at pseudo superiority maybe?? It's a failure BTW.

Mine was only a wee bit older then that when he went to bid with his beloved Liverpool losing badly at half time in the Champions League final.

He was up again for the penalty shoot out.

|The Miracle of Istanbul 2005, We watched the penalty shoot out on the patio through the dining room window. No child was harmed.

DontBuyAnotherBook · 18/06/2026 06:41

It was probably the most entertaining game of the world cup so far. Well worth staying up for.

GHOSTTHINKER · 18/06/2026 08:44

How's everyones mornings gone? Were DC really tired or have they all managed ok? Mine were actually fine. Although I have to say youngest did take himself off to bed after 10 minutes of the 2nd half and eldest was snoring at around 70 minutes 😂 my kids are lightweights like me and their dad I forced myself to stay awake so I could update them both on the final score this morning lol!

My 8 year old watched the whole match and was difficult to wake at 7 but he was pretty soon full of beans as normal. We've got a long day of sightseeing round Cambridge ahead of us so he'll probably sleep in the car afterwards.

GHOSTTHINKER · 18/06/2026 10:29

Enjoy your day of sightseeing @Natsku I'm sure your DS will be ready for an early night tonight. I just hope my boys arn't too grumpy in School today 😂

DD was absolutely fine. She watched the whole thing and was in bed for 11. I let her sleep until 8 this morning so she only had time for a quick breakfast and was at school for 8:45 as usual. I've just seen her as I was in to read with her class and she seemed ok. I swear she's got more stamina than me!

SJM1988 · 18/06/2026 14:22

We let DS8 stay up - he fell asleep in the last 3 mins of the match. He was a little tired this morning but went to school fine. He was very aware how to acted this morning would dictate if he go to stay up and watch the next match though
