To let my 7 year old stay up to watch the England game?

9pm kick off tonight, the first England game of the World Cup.

I have some great memories from the World Cup when I was a child. It’s once every four years…

Should I, or is it ridiculous?

My 8yo who has just got into watching football with dh will stay up for the first half. Her bedtime is usually 8.15pm. School are aware there will be lots of tired children, it’s sports day anyway so they aren’t going to be doing much learning.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 17/06/2026 16:41

Yes if he is really into football and wants to. No if he's not really bothered. He will probably be tired tomorrow but it's worth it once in a while.

TokyoSushi · 17/06/2026 16:41

See how he gets on for the first half, I remember watching Italia '90 with my Dad - great memories!

No chance. I'm teaching my children than 11 millionaires kicking a ball around isn't really worthy of our attention and we'll be reading National Geographic instead. If they really want they can find out the score at school.

🙄

Mamdani has the personality to get away with that, imagine if Starmer did it!!!!

Also, New Yorkers don’t have a stick up their arse about things like this, unlike the UK where a significant number of people, I think we can all agree, certainly do.

On the sofa in pyjamas with a quilt or sleeping bag. He might well fall asleep. I don't suppose he'll be the only one in his class to have stayed up.

There are some children with the Tartan Army in Boston.
I'm not in favour of taking kids out of school for 2 weeks in Benidorm, but this looks like a really great experience, and a lovely dad and son bonding time.

(I know Scottish schools break up earlier, but I don't think they've broken up yet, have they?)

The arbitrary classism of 'Benidorm' combined with the baseless assumption that a holiday in Spain couldn't be a good experience, or involve family bonding time. And why is a trip to Boston to football only for fathers and sons?

😂 this has got to be a wind up...... if not then my word I feel sorry for those poor DC 😂

ghostofchristmaspasta · 17/06/2026 16:53

I’m actually so glad DC has no interest in football, or DH for that matter. I’m already sick of the World Cup and it’s barely started 😂.

It’s all I’ve been hearing about with the kids at work, and I haven’t noticed much additional mid day tiredness, so if they can handle it I’d say why not!

Keepoffmyartichokes · 17/06/2026 16:57

13 year old wants to at least watch the first half but he's in the middle of a tough school week with tests so will see how he feels about watching more than that. He needs his sleep and doesn't cope well on a late night.
It's hard to call as all kids are different. He has friends who are up until 11 on a school night and are fine the next day, where as mine is in bed at 9.15 goes straight to sleep and needs waking up in the morning. There is no right or wrong here

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 17/06/2026 16:58

Also to be fair depending on where you live he may well be woken up by the noise if they win. There’s no way our kids would have slept through the noise of the Scotland game someone was playing fucking bagpipes down the road 😭😭. We do live pretty city centre though so again depends where you live.

There's 22 🤣

JoyousWriter · 17/06/2026 17:03

Yes! Hopefully, itll be great.

DontBuyAnotherBook · 17/06/2026 17:05

Eight year old will watch about half. If it were 2am then not a chance even if on Friday or Saturday. She would probably be asleep on the sofa.

Simonjt · 17/06/2026 17:06

We’re letting our ten year old stay up, however it will be 10pm here, so he’ll go to bed at half time and we’ll play the second half the next morning while he gets ready for school, so fingers crossed it doesn’t go into extra time.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 17/06/2026 17:06

My neighbour loves to make a huge thing about the fact that nobody in her family like football … her DH and 3 adult sons adore rugby as it’s much more upper class, less riff raff 🙄🤣

MyballsareSandy2015 · 17/06/2026 17:08

I loved keeping mine up for special things, despite usually being a stickler for bedtimes. They’re adults now and have great memories.

They never missed a New Year’s Eve party … from a few months old until they left home for uni.

Why not? It's 'event television'. Hope he has a great night. 😊

I said no to my almost 12 year old, now I'm rethinking.

Why did you say no?

It won't go to extra time in the group games.

This shows I need to work on my football knowledge!

hay5689 · 17/06/2026 17:18

Yes let him stay up! It’s once every four years and he’s got time to catch up on his sleep tomorrow night. There’s probably going to be lots of tired kids in English schools tomorrow (and teachers) so he’ll be in good company.

Maybe your boy will be ok getting up for school and getting through the day. Mine is 10, we let him watch the France/Senegal game which finished at 10 pm ish . He's struggled so much getting up , we didn't get to school in the end and I had to take a day off work to stay with him. He's autistic and struggles with sleep, thirst, food and noise aspects of everyday life so it might be different for yours.
I'm not going to allow him again unless it's a weekend !!!

That brings back a memory from '86 when the group game finished in a draw and the teams just walked off.

"Shouldn't there be extra time ?" I asked.

Ouch <blush emoji>

Rizzz · 17/06/2026 17:28

Not that you bothered coming back but...

It's just not a question to ask strangers, is it?

You know you're own child, you know whether it will affect them negatively or whether it won't affect them at all.

This is a decision only parents can make.
