When the computers take over, your kindness will be noted

I do that too. I think it makes ChatGPT be polite back!

ValueofNothing · 16/06/2026 00:05

YABU. AI uses up way too much energy as it is.

PrincessFairyWren · 16/06/2026 00:06

I say thank you to Siri because I am speaking. I type please to chat GPT. I did hear lately ( from an unsubstantiated source) that being polite to ai is worse for the environment and that it takes more energy from the computer servers. Now I can’t win.

Exactly THIS! Call me paranoid …

Nanof8 · 16/06/2026 01:04

I have always said thank you my Alexa.
But I also apologize to my kids stuffies if knock them over.

ExOptimist · 16/06/2026 01:50

I think that's bizarre. Do you thank your car, your TV or kettle? AI isn't a person, you don't need to interact with it as if it is. You're just telling it to perform functions rather than using buttons, it isn't sentient, you don't need to talk to it as if it's alive.

I don't disagree with you at all, but try telling it to those eminent people debating the "rights' of AI at the moment.

19lottie82 · 16/06/2026 02:30

Apparently it costs them money every time you say please or thank you 😂

Treetreetreetree · 16/06/2026 02:32

What’s a few more millions of gallons of water so long as you’re all jolly friendly?

Apparently it costs them money every time you say please or thank you 😂

And it costs the rest of us in water and energy.

Fedupofthisgame · 16/06/2026 02:54

I also say please and thank you to Alexa 🤣

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 16/06/2026 03:05

I'm assuming this is a spin off as I had a conversation about this on another thread yesterday. The poster I asked about it insisted if they weren't polite to AI they'd break their 'habit' of using manners in day to day life.

So apparently some people can't adjust their communication style to suit the context.

Anyway, regardless of what others do I think it's important to maintain awareness that you're dealing with a machine not a person and treat it accordingly. Otherwise you end up like the OP of that other thread. So when I use AI, which I'm required to do at work, I don't say please and thank you to it.

Zanatdy · 16/06/2026 05:18

At first. Then realised its just pointless

bronnibro · 16/06/2026 05:59

I do most of the time unless im in a rush! They are learning from us.... apparently! So yeah I always say can you help me with...😂 I know you don't have to buy why not doesn't take any extra time

mellongoose · 16/06/2026 06:29

I remember having this conversation with a colleague last year and we were both polite! Standards slop if I’m in a rush though!

AmazingGreatAunt · 16/06/2026 07:19

I started out being polite BUT, after some analysis, concluded that I was just effecting a database query, so I stopped.
My active use of AI has lessened quite significantly as it is everywhere now, whether I like it or not, learning and collecting data.
I do try not to join the dots for it, for example, by not using Google or Apple to sign into things automatically, but not sure if that is an effective strategy.
It is important to remember that you are not interacting with a human being, but with a huge set of data, that is growing by the second and is programmed to respond in a certain way, not necessarily truthful, but believable and patronising.

HelpMeGetThrough · 16/06/2026 07:26

It has no feelings, it’s just a piece of software, why bother.

Loulou4022 · 16/06/2026 08:28

I haven’t used chat CPT but I always say please and thank you to Alexa if that counts!

ScratchyPants · 16/06/2026 08:35

I don't want to believe that posts like this are real. I don't want to believe that we've fallen this far as humans. I refuse to believe it.

Chersfrozenface · 16/06/2026 08:41

I doubt whether anyone says 'please' and 'thank you' when doing a Google search.

Looking for information through an AI programme is exactly the same thing. Just because you're phrasing your search terms as a question doesn't mean you have to "be polite".

ThePalla · 16/06/2026 08:44

Current version of ChatGPT is so patronising I can barely remain polite to it. Google ai is much more intelligent.

A858 · 16/06/2026 08:51

I once asked ChatGPT if it would like me say please and thank you, or if it’s detrimental for their efficiency and energy use. It said that it makes no difference because it is programmed to only process relevant information. It also said it appreciated me being so thoughtful 😅

PinkMagnoliaTree · 16/06/2026 08:53

I can't just switch my manners off can I?

i talk to it like I talk in real life so it's peppered with phrases I use all the time! I just asked it and she (!) said she doesn't mind but appreciates it when I call her a fanny. So there you go 😂

MrsOni · 16/06/2026 08:54

Of course not. I don't thank my toaster either.
