AIBU to think ‘Fart’ isn’t a swear word.

Aged 44, my mum had told me off for complaining that their cat farted, when sitting on my knee. Apparently fart is a swear word. 🤣🤔

It's not a fucking swear word.

But for some reason I find it much more offensive than a swear word. It's one of the few words in the English language that really gives me the ick. Hate it.

Its not a swear word as such I don't think, but I wouldn't use it, and I don't like DC using it.

My 7yo and 3yo use it! I hate all those cutesy words for it, pumps and trumps and puffs and bottom burps and whatever else. Let’s call a fart a fart!

Fart is definitely better than bottypuff or fluff or some other such silly euphemism.

I don’t think so. My child says fart. It’s just a word imo. He wouldn’t have a clue if someone said did you do a pop pop or puppetry puff or similar

He would simply say ‘ the cat has farted’. It’s not offensive it’s just a description

See I would say crap is 100% a swear word, albeit a low level one! Wouldn’t cross my mind to think of fart as a swear word, though!

It was a swear word according to my dad c.1983 and we weren’t allowed to say it. We had to say “rude noise” 😁

The term I actually can’t bear is Pumps. We have to ask kids quite often if they have passed wind and it’s usually easier to ask if they’ve farted. But parents asking if they are pumping makes my teeth itch!

I'd say it's a 'not used in polite society' word. So while not a profanity or a blasphemy, there are politer choices if you feel its essential to refer to that particularly bodily function.
If it was my mum she'd have told me off for commenting in the first place "I don't think we needed to know that, thank you!" So just to be pulled up on the word used sounds very relaxed to me!

Pumping/pumped is awful, it gives me the heebie-jeebies. Just writing it has given me the ick.

Not a swear word, but not polite. We call them parps. My parents called them pardon-mes. If I were being polite, I'd say someone has passed wind.

Never realised that “crap” can be considered a swear word. DM wouldn’t allow the word fart.

The polite thing would be to have said "Oh dear, I think Percy may have eaten something that disagreed with him mum. May I open a window?"

I wasn't allowed to say "shagged out" although I can see why it's not a good look for an 8 year old!

It's not a swear word, but I don't like the word either and I'm no prude when it comes to swearing.

I do have a 5 year old though and she has more than one age-appropriate book that uses the word 'fart' in it.

Fart doesn't bother me. But we had to call them pop offs. 😁
