WIBU - car boot sale

Dunnoburt · 31/05/2026 21:38

Quick one because I was ripped a new arsehole this morning and made to feel like a right tit.

Car boot sale. Used flip flops. No brand. Private seller. Very much worn in. £3 asking price.

Was I being unreasonable to pick the one half of pair on show up an try it on?

(I'm sure a lot of people will think IABU to even contemplate buying second hand worn in flip flops but try not to think about that! 🤣)

You can buy new from primark for £1.50!

ThatOrThis · 31/05/2026 21:40

Was just going to say ^^ but previous poster beat me to it!

SnappyQuoter · 31/05/2026 21:41

Yes, you were unreasonable to try them on because you shouldn’t be buying them! No one needs to buy “very worn in” flip flops second hand.

VIII · 31/05/2026 21:43

New flip flops are cheaper...

However in your situation I wouldn't have tried them on. Presumably you knew the size and therefore could decide if they would fit or not. Not sure what trying them on would tell you. Flip flops are pretty much identical in how they fit.

Oh absolutely agree, but these were not just the bog standard flip flop - I'm in no way into fashion so maybe I've not been truthful with my descriotion - they had the bit.between the toe, no back, but the bit covering the foot was kind of "woven" stuff - to me, its a flip flop lol

Yabu.

Dunnoburt · 31/05/2026 21:46

Oh god I'm obviously being unreasonable let me see if I can post a picture of something similar - they were so worn they had no size to see but I have wide feet so wanted to see if my feet would fit through the slider like woven bit before the toe bit - I'm evidently being unreasonable though so good to know for future boot sales

Were you wearing socks? I can't imagine sticking my foot into someone else's very obviously worn flip flops, woven top or not 😬

VanillaImpulse · 31/05/2026 21:48

If I was a seller I wouldn’t have a problem with it

TeaPot496 · 31/05/2026 21:49

So you didn't even ask?

redboxerclub · 31/05/2026 21:51

Nah it’s a car boot. If it’s anything like the one I go to they are all mental when it opens a it’s like the hunger games. May the odds be ever in your favour.

VIII · 31/05/2026 21:53

Surely you ask what size they are first and then if they are the right size ask if they'd mind if you tried them on?

The whole thing is weird.

Dunnoburt · 31/05/2026 21:54

Like this - nope, didnt ask, its a car boot. But happy to be told I was BU and will take note for future. I was already wearing what I class as flip flops and I dont eat with my feet so buying other people's seconds doesnt really bother me.

Not eating with your feet seems a low bar tbh, the thought of very worn possibly sweat soaked second hand flip flops is just nasty.

That's fine, you have your opinion, but that wasn't my question.

I don’t see an issue with it

seven201 · 31/05/2026 22:13

I think if the seller was busy, popping one on was fine. If they were just standing opposite you doing nothing, it would have been polite to ask.

Exactly this! Why would anyone even consider this???

Tillow4ever · 31/05/2026 22:14

I think you should have asked, but fundamentally no issue with trying them on. I’m sure if you’d asked they’d have been fine about it.

NoWinnersOnlyLosers · 31/05/2026 22:15

Did you buy them or not?

Apparently not. Apparently it would be disgusting. And oh boy she made that very loudly clear.

I think it’s fine to try them on
espescially if not marked with a size

HeddaGarbled · 31/05/2026 22:18

What were they cross about? Was it a hygiene thing?

I like them. I imagine the wide band would help them stay on better. Any idea where they’re from new?

Dunnoburt · 31/05/2026 22:18

NoWinnersOnlyLosers · 31/05/2026 22:15

Did you buy them or not?

I wasn't allowed to try them on so no lol..... but she made me feel so awful that even if she had relented and let me try them on id have declined.

In which case she’s the bonkers one. What harm is there in quickly checking shoes fit? She’s daft because clearly you weren’t going to buy them without knowing they fit, and if they weren’t in great condition, she’d have likely taken them home again. Also, if she was selling them, she was never going to wear them again anyway, so what is the issue?
