WIBU - car boot sale

Dunnoburt · 31/05/2026 21:38

Quick one because I was ripped a new arsehole this morning and made to feel like a right tit.

Car boot sale. Used flip flops. No brand. Private seller. Very much worn in. £3 asking price.

Was I being unreasonable to pick the one half of pair on show up an try it on?

(I'm sure a lot of people will think IABU to even contemplate buying second hand worn in flip flops but try not to think about that! 🤣)

Not eating with your feet seems a low bar tbh, the thought of very worn possibly sweat soaked second hand flip flops is just nasty.

Surely they can be washed? But it sounds as though they'd had it anyway

Lmnop22 · 31/05/2026 22:20

Don’t really understand why everyone seems so repulsed by trying on shoes….?!

Surely if buying new you’d try on so why not for a secondhand pair?!

YANBU

What were they cross about? Was it a hygiene thing?

I like them. I imagine the wide band would help them stay on better. Any idea where they’re from new?

That is just an example of the style with the foot bit - not those specific flip flops but just an idea as to why I wanted to try before I buy. Presume hygiene but surely she wanted to get rid of them? It's a car boot sale, that's the whole ethos!

In which case she’s the bonkers one. What harm is there in quickly checking shoes fit? She’s daft because clearly you weren’t going to buy them without knowing they fit, and if they weren’t in great condition, she’d have likely taken them home again. Also, if she was selling them, she was never going to wear them again anyway, so what is the issue?

Yeah totally strange people try on shows in shoe shops as well and the shop assistant doesn't tell them they are disgusting

morgan56 · 31/05/2026 22:22

It’s a boot sale, anything goes 😆
my finest car boot memory from when I was like 13, is a lady umming and arrrhing over 50p linen trousers and then going round the back of the car opening the door to create a bit of privacy to try them on 🤣
when I’ve looked at shoes recently, the seller has offered me to try them on.

TikTok shop sell them.

TikTok shop sell them.

That was just an image search to show the kind of style and why I wanted to try them on - screen shot from Shein i believe 😆but the ones i wanted to try on were similar style but like a woven type material, well worn, but still plenty of life left!

I wasn't allowed to try them on so no lol..... but she made me feel so awful that even if she had relented and let me try them on id have declined.

How did she expect to sell them if she wouldn't let anyone try them on?!

Hence me wondering if I really was BU! 😂

Totally normal. Did the seller think you were trying to steal them perhaps? That’s all I can think of. I would never buy shoes of any type without trying on first as you can’t always tell by looking if they’re going to be comfortable. In fact, I got some sandals for free at a car boot last weekend (seller just wanted rid) but I still tried them on first.

I think it was the universe protecting you from her athlete's foot.

Forget her.

Dotheseasideshuffle · 01/06/2026 00:27

I’ve just bought some DM sandals on Vinted and now wondering if I’m BU…do people really not buy second hand shoes?!

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 01/06/2026 06:09

I could understand her argument if they were new but they are asking for someone to buy them when at least one person has already had their feet in them? It isn't you.

This could so easily be a foot fetish fodder thread... 😳 Hopefully the op is legit, I dunno. So detailed, so specific, so gross..

WTF??

RollOnSunshine · 01/06/2026 09:48

good manners to ask first. Most seller will be fine with it but if they say no then walk away.

YoBetty · 01/06/2026 09:57

Regular car-booter here. The seller was being ridiculous.

CarbootJunction · 01/06/2026 10:40

Why would the seller care if anyone tried them on? She's put them out for literally dozens of people to touch with their bacteria-laden hands. I've seen dogs cock their leg over car boot stuff, so a human trying on a pair of flip flops is a non-issue in my book.

DelphiniumBlue · 01/06/2026 13:55

She was wanting to sell them to someone, so clearly had no compunction about someone wearing second hand shoes in general, so I can't see how it was reasonable for her to complain about you trying them on. Was she concerned that if you didn't want them, then a subsequent buyer would have had 2 varieties of foot juice on the shoes they were buying rather than just one?
The logic doesn't make sense and in fact she sounds batshit.

I can assure you I am a legit poster! My days! I actually hate feet haha especially mine, I was just a bit embarrassed by the sellers reaction - I'm a "hardcore" car booter and literally make my small person take her shoes on and off every weekend (much to her annoyance) without asking sellers, to try on trainers etc. I refuse to buy brand new for her as they grow so quickly, I've never had such a vehement rection before (when trying on for myself or small person) so was wondering if ive seriously grossed out millions of car booters! But ill take the roughly 75 percent NBU and will continue with my grim weekend pursuits of not paying full price.....long live the booty!

You did nothing wrong! An overreaction on the sellers part I’d say. No need for it x

Judging by your name, you understand 😀I'm just super sensitive and very much a please others person so was second guessing!
