People from other countries - they’re just better than us, aren’t they?

I’m on holiday in the Balkans and like everytime I go overseas, it’s difficult not to conclude people from other countries are just better than us.

Immaculately kept, litter free, great service in bars and restaurants by experienced staff, polite well behaved kids eating out in restaurants, not a screen in sight. Everyone generally better looking, better dressed.

Or do I have rose tinted holiday goggles on?

And you wonder why you aren't getting anyone liking you.

Are you English? Because you certainly fit the cold, nasty stereotype well.

I made plenty of non English friends in England. No English ones

Cultures are different. Doing something different to you that you don't understand doesn't mean we are all cold. My colleagues father died recently. I don't think it would have occurred to me to go. It just isn't the norm. Doesn't mean it is wrong.

It's a weird culture where you don't attend a funeral simply because you don't know the deceased.

I suspect you make your disdain of them very obvious. I have plenty of non English friends too. Wonder why they can make friends with English people but you can't?

Well it would be boring if we all had the same culture. I find baby showers odd in America but I don't criticise or make judgements on how their personalities.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 01/06/2026 22:18

I live in the North. Try saying they are cold up here. Even many Southerners aren't either. Sweeping generalisation.

It's always someone else's fault but " the English people that are nasty 's fault. Of course.

Do better.

My boss travels for our company.
China was by far the worst place he has ever had to go. City he went to in 2018 was so polluted he had to wear basically a full gasmask outside and a facemask inside his hotel. Everyone smoked, spat on the pavements and their was human and animal waste left on streets.

Osaka on the other hand was immaculate when he went four years back. We aren't as good as some, but far far better than many other places. Like America where big city infrastructure has been crumbling for decades because no one will pay for it.

You have issues. You reckon in every interaction that English person is nasty and it couldn't possibly be you that is maybe not the nice one? Luckily I know the majority of English are nice.

WirralWool · 01/06/2026 22:37

I’m knocking on a bit but I remember the days when, if a colleague had suffered a bereavement, a representative from work would attend the funeral, presumably as a show of support and respect. It happened everywhere I worked, but I doubt it would happen these days.

I went to my best friend’s Mum’s funeral. I didn’t know her. I just sat at the back of the church. I wanted my friend to know that I was there for her. She was very touched that I’d made the effort. I didn’t go to the wake. I don’t think that’s weird at all.

I wouldn't say that every interaction is nasty. I would say that interactions are cold and unenjoyable. There is a definitely a cold, unemotional culture in England. I am far from the only person to say it

I think I would do that especially as it is a best friend.

Yes evey single country in the entire world is better thsn us 🙄🙄

😂😱

tulipseason12 · 01/06/2026 23:04

im from balkans and while countries and people are great, its insanely corrupt! for example .. if you are drink driving you can just give 20 euros and get off free. a young girl was crossing the zebra crossing and a drunk teen killed her by speeding and he was found not guilty because his father was a well known businessman.
if you have a business you HAVE to vote for current president every time lol if not they will threaten you until you dissolve that same business. there is no benefit system, if you lose your job you have £0 income.social support system for families doesnt exist. people will run go fundme type collections for orphaned kids who live on their own because state just doesn't care at all.
so yes nature is beautiful, it is safe especially for women but for living there, no. i thank the lord every day for the opportunity to live in the UK 😅

Let's just say she posts a lot on Twitter or X or whatever it's called these days

I’ve seen what she posts on X. I just don’t think there’s an issue with what she posts 🤷‍♀️

It's nothing to do with being boring or not, it's just downright cold and unfeeling to not attend the funeral of a family member of a friend, or someone you know very well, just because you don't know the deceased.

I have to say I've never heard anyone say Brits are warm and friendly either.

Both of those are common where I live - not the UK.

You’ve never been to France?

Honestly, I just think a lot of English people are really weird.

I'm moving on soon, I wouldn't live in England again.

Thank god for small mercies.

We aren't like Americans. I think it just takes a bit of time and then we are fine. You haven't been to Yorkshire or Liverpool have you?

Plenty of European kids had screens on my holiday last week

they’re scruffy buggers too. Cant give them appearance. Especially Belgians and Germans
