Just watched the documentary.

I remember having tapes of her first album at the Primary school disco. I loved her edgier tracks, didn’t like the hot pants song, but loved Can’t get you out of my head’
The Jason Donovan phase was interesting and how miserable she looked on holiday when he was filming her and how quickly she appeared to move on to Michael Hutchence (spelling)
The cancer episodes were heartbreaking and I’m intrigued by her relationship with Dani.
She seems to glow and seems very kind hearted, but I still don’t get a sense of her as a person or who she is, no idea why?!

Anyone else?

I know 😅just never liked it. I liked ‘Confide in me’ & ‘Can’t get you out of my head’ the most

Spinning Around was my favourite

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 28/05/2026 22:02

Really surprised about Jason Donovan. I thought everyone thought he was gay?

EmeraldRoulette · 28/05/2026 22:03

My favourite version of Confide In Me from a tour that was nearly 20 years ago! I absolutely love that dress. It's still the first thing I think of when somebody says the song name.

I’ve not watched it yet as I’ve been away all week. I’m REALLY looking forward to it though - I’ve been a massive Kylie fan since I was around 8 years old and watched her as Charlene punch Scott as she climbed through the window!

I used to have a massive collection - all the videos etc, and I remember in one of the videos she was saying about some of the things in the press was quite upsetting but luckily she had really thick skin. So clearly she learnt very early on to put her guard up. I remember so many interviews where she was talking about one day being a mother if she met the right man etc - I really felt for her that she achieved so much professionally, but never managed the one thing she seemed to want more than anything. I’ve been fortunate enough to see her live in concert 8 times. She is a brilliant performer live - she really knows how to put on a show. My dad took me to the Let’s Get To It tour for my birthday present around 1994. He was NOT a fan in the slightest of her music, but even he came away saying how much he enjoyed the show!

I’ve really enjoyed the evolution of her music, and how she reinvented herself to stay current. A very shrewd businesswoman in my mind. On her album “Golden” there’s a song called Dancing. In it she sings “when I go out, I want to go out dancing”. To me it was very obvious she was saying this is what she wants to do until she dies. Forever the showgirl.

PP who mentioned Love at First Sight - which one did you mean as she’s had 2 songs with the same name. I think one was an album track quite early on (either on Kylie or Enjoy Yourself because I remember I had it on vinyl) and the other was a Parlephone release.

Oh and the pink spacesuit - that was Put Yourself In My Place. Loved that song. We had a video jukebox in my parents pub and I remember that video getting played a LOT!

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 28/05/2026 22:12

Love at first sight is my fave. Brings back such lovely memories Rolf being young and free!

MyTrivia · 28/05/2026 22:13

Jason Donovan sued a newspaper for saying he was gay.

Mega fan!

Thank you! I remember a quiz once had the tie break question “what is Kylie Minogue’s date of birth” - I was the one who got it instantly and spit on lol.

Im definitely up there with done of her biggest fans, although have no doubt there will be bigger fans than me still!

Yes he did seem a bit nasty…very bitter. Seems strange he’d still be so upset about it? Wouldn’t love that if I was his wife!

He is just so weird about the whole thing, it was decades ago you were young, get over it, his poor wife having to listen to him ramble on about Kylie,

I love Kylie we are the same age i look 10 years older than her 😂

The highlight was Nick Cave’s awkward performance on top of the pops and him
saying how terrified he was of the teenage girls!

MaryBennetThe2nd · 28/05/2026 22:30

Some of the questions she was asked on chat shows were awful.
She was 19/20 and being asked about sex and boob jobs by middle aged or older men.

Charlize43 · 28/05/2026 22:39

I couldn't get into it and only watched about half. She seemed nice enough (often these types of documentaries are PR puff pieces) but she didn't interest me as a person. I know it's Kylie and not Simone de Beauvoir, but there didn't seem much there... not particularly interesting as a singer or musician.

W0tnow · 28/05/2026 23:32

Yes, for Paula Yates!

iirc he left Helena Christiansen for Paula. Big news at the time!

bornwithhorns · 29/05/2026 00:14

I’ve only seen a bit of it I’m looking forward to watching it properly over the weekend but I really really like her.
she said something about music being energy or something and you can just see that she adores what she does.
i felt disgusted what she has to go through from the press and the interviews etc , she was so young and so polite to everyone.
Jason seemed a bit shitty from the but I saw but I guess he has resentment / regrets who knows.
i really like her , there is nothing wrong with being a nice person and that’s how she comes across.
i truly don’t see her as bland

BarbBarbbarb · 29/05/2026 07:15

Unicornsandrainbowbrites · 28/05/2026 11:39

He really does not come across well! I found him to be annoying when he was filming her on holiday and calling her bossy or something
She also didn’t touch upon feeling guilty/sad for leaving him etc. He seemed very ego driven

I thought he was quite measured given that she appeared to have dumped him for Michael H!

miserablecat · 29/05/2026 07:30

There is another thread about this but I'll post on here too.
Kylie has been my girl crush since I was about 10, she was and still is beautiful!
I think it was understandable JD would have been bitter about her dumping him for MH, and interesting that she kind of glossed over it or didnt mention she felt badly. But since it was nearly 40 years ago, and hes married with 3 kids, im surprised at how aggressively he answered.

I think they both have what the other desperately wanted - she has had stratosphere global success (incidentally I dont think because she's a better singer or actor, but more from charisma, and a kind of star quality) which coupled with going off with a famous rock star - would have been a bitter pill. And yet he has settled down and had kids, which is something that Kylie wanted but was not able to have...

I think maybe he sees her as his first love and is a bit obsessed....but she feels the same way about MH.

BarbBarbbarb · 29/05/2026 08:27

Bloody love Kylie though!

Dazedanddiscombobulated · 29/05/2026 08:33

Oh wow. Some harsh assessments here.

I’m not a massive Kylie fan but my takeaway was not that she was bland or lacking in substance. I’ll admit she was often guarded in interviews but here’s what I learned about her:

  • She has grit and drive - you don’t get the longevity she’s had in the music business without this. She could have easily stayed with SAW and been just another 80s artist that didn’t survive past the decade but she’s carved her own path.
  • She’s that person from your group of friends that lights up the room - she’s optimistic about life and hasn’t allowed her personal struggles to knock the shine off her.
  • She’s down-to-earth and family oriented. Mega fame hasn’t dented those values.
  • I didn’t see any ego. Maybe people would have found her more interesting if she’d had more ego, but she’s just quietly confident in herself.

I don’t see any of that as lacking in substance - do art collections or quirky hobbies bestow substance? I don’t think so.

Never thought I’d be a Kylie defender but I was quite impressed by her.

VeganSteakAndFries · 29/05/2026 08:43

Unicornsandrainbowbrites · 28/05/2026 11:40

Yes, I think this is it, I want her to have more depth or more about her? Maybe she does, but I can’t see it. She was with MH though and the French guy, there must be more to her, plus very good friends with Nick Cave-I found this part interesting too

Why must there be more to her because of men?!

Dazedanddiscombobulated · 29/05/2026 08:55

Just in terms of longevity she’s had top 10 singles in the UK charts across five consecutive decades. The only other female artists with similar longevity are Madonna, Cher, Barbra Streisand and Shirley Bassey.

I don’t think we need to look to her male relationships to find evidence of substance.

VeganSteakAndFries · 29/05/2026 08:43

I meant the type of men she liked really
