Just watched the documentary.

I remember having tapes of her first album at the Primary school disco. I loved her edgier tracks, didn’t like the hot pants song, but loved Can’t get you out of my head’
The Jason Donovan phase was interesting and how miserable she looked on holiday when he was filming her and how quickly she appeared to move on to Michael Hutchence (spelling)
The cancer episodes were heartbreaking and I’m intrigued by her relationship with Dani.
She seems to glow and seems very kind hearted, but I still don’t get a sense of her as a person or who she is, no idea why?!

Anyone else?

Performers are often lacking in their own personality and character. I hesitate to say ‘ vacuous’ but in truth lots of performers are Exactly that. It’s all for show.

Member984815 · 28/05/2026 13:13

I enjoyed it , I think because of the hard time she got in the press in the past it's hard for her to express herself, jason was very bitter. She looks amazing I remember when the press was trying to say danni and her didn't get on and there was jealousy between them . You can see how much they love each other. Kylie looks fantastic I was sad to hear she had cancer again but happy she was allowed the privacy the second time around to get through it on her own. I really wanted to slap cat deeley when she was asking her about kids , you could see how devastated kylie was to not be able to have kids

newfriend05 · 28/05/2026 13:16

Loved the documentary, I’ve heard Jason is not a nice man, and I think he drank and took drugs due to being quite bitter that he did not get the success that he thought he should. Also don’t think she even got over Micheal .

Gowlett · 28/05/2026 13:19

I remember the first time I saw Kylie…
Her tape was the first one I ever owned.
Still have it, with my name on the front.

I feel a bit sorry for Jason Donovan.
He was the ultimate blonde boy next door.
But MH was a total sex god, I mean…

cheezncrackers · 28/05/2026 13:26

The press were horrible about everyone in the 1990s - particularly women. I think too that if you are a public figure you have to keep part of yourself private for your own sanity, if nothing else. If you live every part of your life in public I think that speaks of mental health and self-worth issues, and Kylie strikes me as someone who has retained her sense of self, whose normal family have kept her grounded and whose protection of her privacy is entirely sensible and understandable. Think for a moment of all the people who tell the journalists everything .... not good right? They seem needy and mentally unwell.

ExOptimist · 28/05/2026 13:31

I watched it and felt that she came over as a really lightweight person, simply lacking in any depth. She said pop music was her life and I think her personality matches pop - shallow, all for 3 minutes of show, no substance.

She came over as a huge people pleaser and that she really wanted to be portrayed as a nice person, it's all about the exterior because there isn't much in the interior.

I think I also wanted to see what else she was interested in and what she did with her huge wealth. For example, is she passionate about art or collecting or interior design or gardening or setting up charitable trusts to fund music teaching? That would have given more depth and sense of who she is.

But perhaps she really is as bland and boring as she appears.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/05/2026 13:43

@ExOptimist Kylie is a very private person though

I'm surprised she even did a documentary - I haven't watched it yet but I will.

When you go to her concerts, she never talks about herself. Interaction with the audience is very limited compared to other stars.

I would imagine she wants to keep all of that private, any philanthropy or whatever is something she will be like George Michael about

And I don't blame her. If the press get hold of anything at all they will find a way to criticise it

But in general, if you put it out there in public, there is a lot of crazy. It's essentially a form of "don't cast your pearls before swine".

I don't think she wants to handover depth and a sense of who she is. I wouldn't want anybody to know who I was if I was that famous either.

I think it's incredibly shortsighted to assume that there is nothing more to a person because they don't want to share that kind of information.

thankfully, she didn't become famous in an era where it was expected that you would comment on political things, or that you would put pictures of yourself going out for dinner on Instagram.

i'm happy either way. I think it's great that someone like Sarah Jessica Parker wants to talk about their other endeavours online.

But I also think it's fine if people want to be private. Certainly, if I'd ever been famous, I'm sure I'd want to be private.

I love Nick Cave but it’s obvious he has the massive horn for Kylie and that’s why he’s so into her

Yes 🤣

Yes, i’m not sure they’re be allowed to ask that nowadays? To be fair to Cat, she was likely having to read from a script

She did an indie album at one stage because she wanted out of the pop biz, but no one really took it seriously. She ended up back doing the pop songs. I've a feeling there's more to her than meets the eye, but she wasn't able to get off the big money treadmill. Michael Hutchence though...what a consolation prize!

manovertheroad · 28/05/2026 13:51

Pretty sure MH dumped her for Helena Christensen back in the day… tbh I think she has blown up the fling with him to something a lot bigger than it was. He was several years older than her, way hotter, way more experienced and already an established rock star. I think you’d be very naive to think she was anything other than one of many women at the time…I have no doubt she was in love with him but don’t think it was returned (there’s a clip even in the doc where a journalist asks MH if he’s in love with Kylie and he doesn’t say yes - he dodges the question completely. A person in love would happily say ‘yes I am’!) I think she look backs on it as the love struck 21 yr old she was as to her it was a massive deal, but to him it probably wasn’t. Also if he’d lived she’d prob have seen him all craggy and old now and changed her mind about him anyway.

I was also shocked at how truly bad her voice is still. Sorry kylie, but all those years of singing and singing lessons and she just shouts and always sounds screechy and off-key. Horrible. I know she never claimed to be a great singer, but I thought by now she would be better 😳

Unicornsandrainbowbrites · 28/05/2026 11:58

Yes the press were horrendous to her, really not nice.
She would have made such a wonderful mother i’m sure, it’s really sad
Was it Michael who left her? Every woman he was with seemed completely mesmerised by him

Yes, for Paula Yates!

GellerYeller · 28/05/2026 13:56

I enjoyed it and thought she did give new detail:
Postponing treatment for IVF, how she feels Michael is still with her somehow, her second diagnosis…
They didn’t mention that Jason Donovan had an overdose in Johnny Depp’s nightclub, in the US. Michael Hutchence was present and apparently was instrumental in getting him help.
Edit for spelling!

GellerYeller · 28/05/2026 13:57

researchers3 · 28/05/2026 13:54

Yes, for Paula Yates!

He was with supermodel Helena Christensen after Kylie and left her for Paula.

Edited

I'm a very private person too and would keep as much to myself as possible if I was famous.

However, the absolute last thing I'd do would be to have a documentary made about me in which I fully participate.

Because she's done this she really can't be as private as you say. There's no purpose to the documentary, she doesn't need the money or to get more fans.

I simply don't believe, having seen it, that there are hidden depths to her, I think she's bland and lightweight. I'm not a fan nor do I dislike her, I was completely neutral but watched to see if there was more to her than appears. But there wasn't.

You should watch it.

MyTrivia · 28/05/2026 14:25

He was with supermodel Helena Christensen after Kylie and left her for Paula.

That’s apparently not exactly quite true - he was supposedly seeing both of them and Paula wanted him to drop Helena. He wouldn’t do it so she made sure the press took photos of her with Michael. When Helena saw these pictures she ended it herself.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/05/2026 15:32

@ExOptimist you say there was no point to the documentary

That's your view

She must've felt there was a point to the documentary. And yes, I will watch it if my flats ever cools down enough for me to sit there and watch some television.

I admit, I am particularly likely to comment because I think it's a great shame when it's assumed that somebody has nothing more to say, but particularly when it's a high achieving attractive woman. It's as if some people set them up that they are not good enough if they don't announce their political views or their charity endeavours - or in the other way, if they don't announce that they don't have any.

One reason why I think it's a shame, if someone like Kylie Minogue can be considered to be absolutely pointless, what on earth does that say about me or the millions of other ordinary people just quietly going about our lives? There's a massive amount of creative work that goes into what she does.

but some people really enjoy criticising and complaining so 🤷🏽‍♀️

didn’t like the hot pants song

Madam, that ‘hot pants song’ is The one and only Spinning Around. Show some respect 😆 x

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Batteriesoptional · 28/05/2026 18:20

I really enjoyed the documentary but agree with OP, I don’t feel that I have an insight into who Kylie really is. The look back at how vile the press and some of the commentators of the day were was shocking. I saw it all in real time but never questioned it as a young person. I was never into her music but I’ve enjoyed delving into the back catalogue - the video of her stripping off in space while flying in what looks like sex toy is hilarious.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/05/2026 18:47

@Batteriesoptional your comment has literally explained why she wouldn't want to say more about herself though.

LOL at showing some respect for the hot pants song. I agree! Sentimentally my favourite one is "love at first sight" which came out when I was having a really tough time and cheered me up.

if you go back to Kylie and the Princess tour, for some reason her sitting in the moon and singing "somewhere over the rainbow" is very important to me. Then got played at my friend's funeral and became even more important

The funny thing is, if you're in the audience, you can see her fastening her seatbelt in the moon! 🥰

Applepe · 28/05/2026 19:07

I read Jason Donovan’s autobiography years ago. If I remember correctly, Kylie and Jason’s relationship started off on an equal footing with Neighbours, but as Kylie’s singing career took off, the hours she spent travelling, promoting and performing took their toll and Jason became resentful and jealous. Jason also had quite a drug habit before, during and after Neighbours. This escalated after the split and he embarked on some serious binges, but only Jason is responsible for his behaviour. He probably looks back at that time of his life as quite a dark period.

Manic Street Preachers wrote & produced her Indie material. They wanted her to sing on one of their earlier singles, but she wasn’t allowed.

Yes, this is what I’m wondering, I feel mean thinking or saying it as she seems a lovely person, but you just can’t grasp at anything with her? Hard to explain.
With Dani, even if the vibe isn’t as lovely or nice (she may well be, I don’t know her) but there’s something to her?

I loved Danni on the X Factor, I always thought she came across well. Dannii had the better career in Australia before Kylie went on Neghbours, so it must have been tough to have spent decades labeled as the lesser successful sisyer, but she has always been dignified despite the tabloid headlines. Dannii went into dance music and was very popular within the club scene in the 90s.

I find it strange that they hid their relationship and pretended they weren’t dating. Really odd.
