Weed smokers on the beach

AIBU to think that it’s selfish to smoke weed on the beach? Especially when it’s a bank holiday and jam packed with families.

We arrived at Barry Island today with our family and sat down. Beach and sea were brilliant and the boys were happily digging in the sand when the tell tale scent became apparent. Right next to us both parents were smoking a joint with both their toddlers sat right there with them. It makes me so sad to see so many people smoking right by their kids…not to mention mine!

As the beach was so rammed we didn’t want to move away from them but we did just take the boys down to the sea only to discover several large groups of teenagers also smoking the strongest smelling weed both in and out of the water.

After several looks from me the man next to us said “she’s not happy” to his partner and I looked at them and said “No, it’s not on. I’m here with my kids and you’re right next to us and loads of families. Do it somewhere else.”

He got up and went and did it somewhere else. It was only later that my husband noticed the guy had an ankle tag on and said thank god he didn’t kick off about it.

Anyway just thought I’d offload and see others thoughts?

I hate the smell just like I hate cigarette smoke.

You shouldn’t be allowed to smoke in public it is antisocial.

It’s also the brazenness of people smoking an illegal substance with zero fucks given. It makes a joke of it being illegal when fuck all is done about it.

If I drink a glass of wine in my garden I don’t affect you, if I smoke a big ole doobie then it wafts over.

At our old place I could be sat in my livingroom in the front of my home and smell my neighbour smoking his weed in his back garden. Bonkers. Air tight sheds for the weed smokers they can hot box themselves if we won’t actually enforce it being illegal.

If I’m having a glass of wine in my garden you have no idea though and it doesn’t impact you. If you’re smoking a joint then I have to go inside and close all the windows and then wait for ages for the smell to dissipate.

You don’t HAVE to, you CHOOSE to. The smell of weed dissipates really quickly, you don’t have to run inside and (passive aggressively no doubt) slam your windows shut.

And when you’ve had another glass, and another, and don’t realise you’re getting louder and louder, and shrieking with laughter at anything and everything, it does affect others.

ByRedBee · 26/05/2026 11:31

I would of sprayed them with my sol de janiro

ByWittyGoose · 26/05/2026 11:47

He wouldn't have kicked off with an ankle tag on.
That would not have had a good outcome for him. He was doing something he shouldn't be doing so he was more wary of your reaction. Obviously hard of thinking though, those poor kids.

I smoked weed (well, resin was all we could get) back in the 90s, everyone was more considerate. We didn't force it on anyone else and it stank a lot less. I despise weed smokers now, inewer strains absolutely stink and it permeates everything.

Yoi can be driving 2 cars behind someone and the smell will linger in your car for ages. It's antisocial, twat behaviour.

I’ve got no issue with adults smoking weed in private as it's their body, their mental health and their choice. But doing it around others, especially children, isn't on. Secondhand smoke IS harmful to children and driving under the influence of weed is on the rise. Sadly, some people don’t seem to care about how their behaviour affects their own children let alone other people's children. It makes me sad that some people are like that.

We're currently on holiday in Pembrokeshire but we haven't come across any weed smokers yet.

Couldn’t agree more! I don’t mind adults choosing to smoke it but just expect respect for others who don’t choose to and especially for children not to be exposed to it.

Enjoy your Pembrokeshire holiday!

So many people now take it not because they want to but because so many restrictions are made to prescription painkillers and gps are given such a hard time for prescribing them . It’s the only option for some people.

I doubt very much that people taking it for health reasons are smoking it. That would just compound their problems. They are more likely to be eating gummies or similar.

Ah yes, and I’ve just remembered something from years ago (over 25 years now I think) , a conversation with a mental health nurse from the local hospital saying that the majority of their residents had had psychotic breaks and the common denominator was strong skunk - it had been bred to have more THC - as you say, that’s the bit that fucks you up. So it’s probably much stronger now. Back then none of us would touch it as we smoked for a relaxed buzz rather than completely mangled, but you could get brown hash and occasionally things like red leb and sticky black.
I don’t think hash/weed is without consequence though, it definitely causes paranoia for some who smoke it regularly and it represses dreams for many people, I knew someone who had very blue eyes that looked almost grey unless they came off the puff for two weeks and course there is the snack issue but that’s less problematic since the advent of Deliveroo, uber eats and so. No one has to make paranoid trips to the petrol station after midnight :-)

I remember the days of leb - although I think it was black leb round my way. It was in resin form and so much milder and a softer buzz. Unless you ate a big chunk of it which I stupidly did one Friday night before a busy Saturday in the shoe shop I worked for at the time. Oh my, was I ever wasted! Still, it wasn’t the horrible wasted you’d get on skunk, which as we agree, will be so much stronger now.

Grim behaviour from them, and suggests that they probably do it regularly at home in front of their toddlers. Poor kids.

Poor children.

mydogisthebest · 26/05/2026 17:05

The smell of weed is disgusting - worse than the smell of cigarettes.

My neighbour smokes it and hangs out of his bedroom window while doing so. I can smell it, not only in the garden, but also in the house. He always seems to be at his window smoking every time me or DH go outside to walk our dog, garden, go to the shops etc. God knows how much of it he smokes a day.

He has been smoking it for a couple of years now and his mental health has got worse and worse as has his temper. He kicks off at everything

InvisibleToTheNakedEye · 26/05/2026 18:08

Would you have been bothered if they had been drinking alcohol?

In my experience people smoking weed are not noisy or aggressive like drunk people, and there’s no cans or bottles left as litter.

Khayker · 26/05/2026 18:24

Weed is still an illegal substance whether you smoke it in public or not. If you use medical marujana in public that's an offence too. It is still illegal to possess it or sell it and if you report it to the police and they do nothing, put in a complaint. Providing you can point out who's responsible so they can make enquiries that should be all they need . It's also an environmental nuisance under the Clean Neighbourhoids Act for which a local authority can issue a fine. It is also anti-social behaviour which the ASB team in your local authority can deal with. If you get fobbed off, complain and keep escalating your complaint until someone sorts it. Easy enough to do.

I was more bothered by the passive smoking angle yesterday. With the heat and the sheer busyness of the beach the smell was so heavy and whatever they were smoking seemed to be making them act a bit crazy.

I agree though that drinking around kids or in public is also anti social but it wasn’t bothering my kids when someone was sipping a beer whereas the smoke was. Generally though too many people can’t handle their drink or take it to extremes.

I’d expect it in a night life area or at a festival and I find that acceptable obviously but not in the morning at a beach in a family setting if you get my point.

Yeah whatever people were smoking yesterday seemed very strong judging by behavioural changes. The atmosphere just completely changed from safe to rowdy and out of control very quickly. Definitely more than weed being enjoyed yesterday that’s for sure.

A deserted beach, fine. Not in the circumstances you describe, though.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 26/05/2026 19:08

That’s exactly why they need specific weed cafe and bar so adults who choose to smoke weed can enjoy it in a ventilated safe space.
My Dsis lives in Spain, private weed bars have made a huge difference to the constant smell of weed in the air, it takes the power from dealers.
The stoned trend is growing and it’ll get worse without a solution as banning it hasn’t worked.

strugglinguphill · 26/05/2026 20:00

It’s disgusting and absolutely stinks. I smoke tobacco, if I am around others (family/friends/other people in close proximity) I will always move and smoke away from people as I know it stinks and it’s not very considerate to smoke near others

Nope some do.

SomeOtherUser · 27/05/2026 08:17

I'm not bothered by the weed specifically, I'm just bothered by smoking! Please, smokers everywhere (of any substance), go far far away from other people when you indulge as it is nasty to have to smell your fumes.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 26/05/2026 04:57

Re most weed smokers aren’t antisocial. The younger ones tend to be, in my immediate and lived experience. Whether this is because their plastic brains have been fried by the stuff I don’t know, as I’m not a doctor, but you ought to meet my neighbours. All young smokers; all selfish, anti social wankers bordering on psychotic.

Quite. I am always intrigued by the claims that it just mellows people out and everyone is harmless because in my experience there are some right crazy-eyed weed smokers around, ready to kick off at any moment. This really chilled out bloke at the beach was tagged. But I'm sure he's a lovely relaxed bloke and a brilliant father.

DollyLeggs · 27/05/2026 22:22

Absolutely hate drugs. Went to see a little house in a nice cul-de-sac a few months ago and the whole street stank of weed. Why on earth do people think weed is so cool when it is totally disgusting?

Who thinks weed is “cool” ? Do you also hate caffeine and alcohol ? Cos they are drugs too

pilates · 28/05/2026 07:58

Agree op, the fact they are doing it on a packed beach sounds like there is a dependency. If you have to, there is a time and a place and not in the circumstances you have described.

MabelAnderson · 28/05/2026 11:48

EmeraldShamrock000 · 26/05/2026 10:05

To counter this, alcohol abuse has brought on serious mental health issues for people, destroyed lives, involved in murder and violence, everything in moderation. There is plenty of people who lost their mind through alcohol. Substance abuse will do this, no matter what the crutch is.
Used in moderation it is fine.

No, that’s not true actually. Alcohol used in moderation is fine yes, but weed can trigger schizophrenia even with moderate use. My family member wasn’t a heavy or long term user. Cannabis is a known risk for schizophrenia, alcohol is not.

I do get your point, but I’m willing to bet there were families drinking alcohol too. Plenty of people equate time off with drinking, Buck’s Fizz etc at breakfast, beer or wine at lunchtime, beer, wine or spirits/cocktails in the evening. I’ve seen plenty of ‘respectable’ people pull out cool boxes of booze at beaches and family events, even in the mornings. Alcohol is socially acceptable, and legal, weed is not, but I’d rather be around stoners than drunks.
