Weed smokers on the beach

AIBU to think that it’s selfish to smoke weed on the beach? Especially when it’s a bank holiday and jam packed with families.

We arrived at Barry Island today with our family and sat down. Beach and sea were brilliant and the boys were happily digging in the sand when the tell tale scent became apparent. Right next to us both parents were smoking a joint with both their toddlers sat right there with them. It makes me so sad to see so many people smoking right by their kids…not to mention mine!

As the beach was so rammed we didn’t want to move away from them but we did just take the boys down to the sea only to discover several large groups of teenagers also smoking the strongest smelling weed both in and out of the water.

After several looks from me the man next to us said “she’s not happy” to his partner and I looked at them and said “No, it’s not on. I’m here with my kids and you’re right next to us and loads of families. Do it somewhere else.”

He got up and went and did it somewhere else. It was only later that my husband noticed the guy had an ankle tag on and said thank god he didn’t kick off about it.

Anyway just thought I’d offload and see others thoughts?

It’s such a strong distinctive and horrible smell. Puts me on edge. Makes me weirdly nostalgic for innocent cigarette smoke which isnt great but preferable to weed.

NoisyHiker · 25/05/2026 23:18

So many people happily announce they are pond scum in public now.

I don't want it legalised, it practically is already, and the stench is already unbearble.

I want it made illegal again, with harsh punishments. Because apparently a portion of society, large enough to be a nuisance, is incapable of behaving like a decent human being without being given consequences like a toddler.

If Lucy Connelly can get that long for a tweet, the twats making life unbearable for their neighbours/anyone around them should get that long too.

I find the smell of cigarette smoke far more offensive!

But neither should be forced on unwilling bystanders, especially children, IMO.

Now that it's finally cool enough, I opened all the curtains and windows, only to have to close ALL of them again because one of my neighbours is out in their garden smoking weed. It's bad enough at the beach, or park, but doing this in a densely packed residential area, on the hottest day of the year, so no one can open their windows, is just selfish, bordering on evil. I hate it. Every bloody summer.

Not sure what the solution is, OP. I'm planning on moving house.

Notashamed13 · 25/05/2026 23:38

Not rtft and also speaking as a regular "weedy" until my dd was conceived 10 years ago - personally think that alcohol is waaay worse than a bit of skunk. But its ok, its "legal".....couldn't get worked up over some "out in the open" toking . Im always in the minority on this one but I flipping love that smell!

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 25/05/2026 23:39

At least you only had to put up with it on a day out. People two doors up from me and two doors down from me smoke weed regularly. I know they are doing it in their own garden but it means we have to put up with the smell every time we go outside. There do seem to be a lot of people who smoke weed as you can smell it when people walk past you.
For personal reasons I won't tolerate drugs at all in the house and my DDs always respected that (neither of them take drugs but I know DDs boyfriend and best friend smoke weed and I obviously wouldn't say anything to them apart from don't do it in my house).
Not true for everyone I know but where do people think herrion and coke users started. Most of the time on weed which is why I don't tolerate it at home.

So you wouldn't mind your daughter having to sit smelling it at the beach or the park because some twat was smoking it right next to her? At all, really?

Should rethink the username.

Id 💯 rather that than someone drinking alcohol next to her ....yes.......🤗

Notashamed13 · 25/05/2026 23:46

No need to rethink my username...... I'm not ashamed! 😘

Notashamed13 · 25/05/2026 23:53

Everyone of these posters would be saying EXACTLY the same thing about "normal" tobacco smoke. So I genuinely dont get the issue. You wont get high from a miniscule passive sniff at the beach! 🤣 do you get fatty arteries from the waft of a burger van? (I'm sure that will be the next "moan")

Nothing against people smoking weed and I agree it should be legally available and taxable etc and managed in the same way alcohol is, but I think it’s wrong to smoke it around kids as their brains are still developing.

I’m intrigued about the anti social behaviour angle though, has the weed changed in recent years? I always felt alcohol was a driver of ASB, whereas weed not so much, eg: never saw someone stoned start a fight so what are the weed smokers doing that’s classified as ASB that’s different from drunk people? Now I’m wondering what they put in the weed now, it’s been many years since I smoked regularly!

It’s nothing like ye olde worlde bit of dirt pot.

The strains developed over the last few decades have so much more thc so it can really mess with your mind. In my day ‘skunk’ weed was the strongest and could really fuck you up, but I bet it’s so much stronger now.

FieryMexicanClive · 25/05/2026 23:09

They really need to regulate it. It's wild so many people smoke it unrestricted. At the very least there should be zones it's not allowed in like beaches, parks and shopping areas and preferably I'd like some kind of requirement to use a filter if you're smoking it in eg a block of flats.

Does it being an illegal class B drug not count as regulation in your book??

Tbf I think they were saying it should be decriminialised and tightly regulated.

Or else they thought it was already legalised - given the amount of people I see smoking it openly whenever I visit a city I suspect many people think it is.

Yes exactly that.

What we've got at the moment is effectively a free for all - it's technically illegal but there's no consequence for it, so people just do as they please.

I agree. Gave up smoking many years ago but don't mind what others do and the smell doesn't bother me

I moved - downsized - to a small over-60s block a couple of years ago (big mistake but that's another story). I have occasionally smelled weed in the corridor, presumably emanating from someone's flat because smoking in communal parts is banned.

My view is live and let live.

Anononony · 26/05/2026 00:52

It should 100% be legalised, then it can be cultivated ethically, loads of new businesses would pop up creating jobs, more tax/vat income.

We don't live far from a pub and have witnessed fights multiple times, people screaming and shouting in the early hours, vomit literally on our doorstep, broken glass and discarded fast food left all over the place. Yes weed has got stronger (I wish hash was still easy to come by!) but tokers don't tend to be antisocial, we stay home and consume the contents of our fridges instead.

There are of course antisocial arseholes who smoke pot, and I'd hazard a guess that a majority of the 'smoke it openly in public spaces' smokers would fall into that category. But the majority are quiet, keep ourselves to ourselves type folk (like most people who enjoy a drink in moderation) who smoke in their own gardens, yes the smell is annoying but it's probably preferable to living next door to a someone who gets pissed/coked up and has house parties all weekend.

Both weed and alcohol are drugs, both have nice people who partake and arseholes who partake, both should be treated exactly the same IMO

bornwithhorns · 26/05/2026 01:33

Clickrodio · 26/05/2026 01:36

Not the biggest fan of the smell but right now pregnant it would have set off my sickness. I walked past someone with a normal cigarette and threw up in the bush 😳

Re most weed smokers aren’t antisocial. The younger ones tend to be, in my immediate and lived experience. Whether this is because their plastic brains have been fried by the stuff I don’t know, as I’m not a doctor, but you ought to meet my neighbours. All young smokers; all selfish, anti social wankers bordering on psychotic.

PaterPower · 26/05/2026 05:31

The parents on the beach almost certainly drove their kids there, then home. As both of them were smoking it, they would have been well over the drug-drive limit and were putting themselves, their kids and other road users at risk.

But then if he was wearing a tag, I’d guess that thinking through the potential consequences of his actions isn’t one of his strengths.

More generally, the stuff is revolting to smell and I’m very lucky that nobody in my neighbourhood smokes it. Or are at least discreet enough that I don’t have to endure it secondhand. It’s a rare day when I don’t smell it in town though and a disturbing number of times from cars in queuing traffic. I don’t agree that the answer is to legalise it.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 26/05/2026 05:43

Gross. It's the smell of sadness imo. I used to smell it frequently near a down at heel part of town where I once worked.

It also messed with a family member's head which I feel quite angry about.

Horrible stuff.

I don’t think people should be smoking it in public but I find it ridiculous when people make hyperbolic comments about weed. Why do you want it illegal ? Do you want alcohol illegal as well out of interest because alcohol is far far worse and more damaging to society in general. I don’t smoke weed myself , don’t like the affect it is ludicrous to suggest “harsh punishments” just cos it’s weed . Smell of vapes and cigarettes is also gross

bigboykitty · 26/05/2026 06:27

I don't hate weed, though the smell is annoying. It's really inappropriate and antisocial to smoke it on a beach full of families. As they had young children with them, I'd feel the same about them getting pissed during the day when supposedly caring for small children.

OpheliaNightingale · 26/05/2026 06:31

@summermumma2021there was a stabbing on Barry Island yesterday, did you get caught up in the chaos of that?
