To have never cleaned under my sofa

Ahhffs · 05/05/2026 19:08

I have just realised that I haven't pulled my sofa out and cleaned under it since it was new- about 3 years ago.
how often do you clean under your sofa? I'm a bit horrified at this realisation it just completely never crossed my mind to do it__

Every few weeks or so. Not a daily / weekly task like the rest of the floors.

Somersetbaker · 05/05/2026 21:02

When I have to move it, usually because I've temporarily mislaid my phone, a memory stick, the music server remote, my bestest pen and they've not disappeared under the cushions or the jigsaw seems to have a missing piece and it's not under the coffee table

Futuremighthold · 05/05/2026 21:04

I rarely do it - but when I do - it’s amazing the amount of dog treats, hair bands, crochet hooks, pens, dust bunnies, glucose strips, lancets and other assorted goods are hiding there!!!!!

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 05/05/2026 21:06

Whenever I clean the front room so once or twice a week. I have cats though their fur gets everywhere and it drives me nuts so constantly have a hoover in my hand.

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/05/2026 21:11

If it’s plain sight I might clean it..eventually. If not, pah, life’s too short. It’s huge and I can’t move it on my own… but basically if you can’t see under it who cares.

Pepperedpickles · 05/05/2026 21:22

Ours has been there about 8 years and we’ve never pulled it out. No one sees it, it doesn’t matter.

LakieLady · 05/05/2026 21:33

Cantthinkofanewusernameffs · 05/05/2026 19:11

Never. I can't shift it on my own.

Don't move any other furniture to vacuum under either. Except maybe the dining chairs.

I can't move my sofas either. I hoover under the dining table and chairs though.

Maddy70 · 05/05/2026 21:34

I can't move mine. It will be gross for eternity

Malinia · 05/05/2026 21:35

I have hard floors so I sweep under mine regularly.

Nopenott0day · 05/05/2026 19:13

We have two dogs so deliberately got a sofa & chairs you can get a hoover underneath. So once a day.

Same.

Haffway · 05/05/2026 22:10

Three times a year. Two of those are because I have to move it to put up/take down the Christmas tree. The other time is around May when the angle of the sunlight shows up the dust in the room and shames me into a burst of deep cleaning. Then it’s out of sight out of mind again until Christmas.

Tattletale26 · 06/05/2026 06:52

Twice a year, sometimes more, we do a spring clean once a year, the whole house and shampoo carpets a couple of times a year, so definitely then

Magpie50 · 06/05/2026 07:00

Nope, CBA. I will also paint around furniture.
If I can't see it then it's not there!😏

horrified, but your response isn’t to spend 3 mins pulling it out and vacuuming, but rather to start a thread about your horror!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 06/05/2026 07:03

At least once a fortnight. I pull them out, hoover and mop. Its usually really needs doing.

I've always felt a bit of a slattern to be honest when o read about other people's housekeeping routines but perhaps im not so bad after all!

I'm actually too scared to look under there now, I have OCD and if there's something gross down there it will be a whole spiral

Have you been diagnosed with OCD?

Because not ever cleaning under your sofa and then not fancying on taking a look I would not say is a classic sign of OCD!

Yes I have, I have severe OCD I'm medicated for and have done lots of therapy for it- definitely do have it. OCD isn't always (or even often) about cleaning at all

Once a month now after a moth infestation on the underside last year. It took us a while to work out where the moths were appearing from, by which time quite a lot of the fabric underneath had been eaten, yuk.

Now we're totally paranoid and lift it regularly to replace the moth killer sachets and inspect for any further signs of the wee bastards.

I dunno, my husband has OCD (diagnosed, medicated, under consultant psychiatrist care, etc) and I think it's rarely, if ever, occurred to him to clean under the sofa!

But his obsessions tend to focus on different types of things. If he got it into his head that Under the Sofa was a particularly dangerous place, he'd be inspecting it multiple times a day, no doubt.

Cross-posted - and agreed.

PurpleVine · 06/05/2026 09:49

when we had two separate sofas i used to do it every week as they were easy to pull out. rarely do it now as current sofa is a massive corner one which slots together. easy enough to take apart but it's like trying to thread a needle with your eyes shut getting it back together.

Someonesawu · 06/05/2026 10:10

How long have you lived there?
do you live alone?

Belladog1 · 06/05/2026 10:21

Every fortnight. There is always candyfloss type dog hair behind there to hoover up.

Now the bed ..... never. My bed has just enough room to crab past the foot of it. There is no way to pull it away from the wall more than a few inches ..... so i hoover under the edges and that's it.

When I move or get a new sofa.
