To have never cleaned under my sofa

Ahhffs · 05/05/2026 19:08

I have just realised that I haven't pulled my sofa out and cleaned under it since it was new- about 3 years ago.
how often do you clean under your sofa? I'm a bit horrified at this realisation it just completely never crossed my mind to do it__

How long have you lived there?
do you live alone?

10 years, but the sofas been there for I'd guess about 3 years.
i live with just myself and two kids so there are probably horrors under there

I vacuum under the sofa whenever I vacuum the sitting room. We have one sofa that has feet and isn't up against a wall so I don't need to move it. I have a Shark vacuum cleaner that has a hinge on the stalk so it can go underneath furniture which is very handy!

Aposterhasnoname · 06/05/2026 13:48

Its on legs so the robot vac can get underneath

Nopenott0day · 05/05/2026 19:13

We have two dogs so deliberately got a sofa & chairs you can get a hoover underneath. So once a day.

Me too but only recently.
Previous sofa was almost impossible to move, incredibly heavy.

Justploddingonandon · 06/05/2026 15:34

About once a year as it's too heavy for me to remove on my own, but I do use a broom handle to get all the lost toys out about once a month, and the seats recline so I put that up when the robot vacuum goes round.

minipie · 06/05/2026 15:35

Only when I have to pull it out for some other reason

However one is very low to the ground so very little dirt goes under anyway or at least I can’t see it which is the same thing

And the other has quite high legs so I can get the hoover most of the way under it

YourWinter · 06/05/2026 15:35

I pull my sofas out to vacuum under them about twice a year, but I have a big pine dresser and a huge oak desk that haven’t been moved in well over 20 years. I can’t move my bed or chest of drawers either.

LondonSymphony · 06/05/2026 15:39

Cleaner does it weekly. There’s quite a big gap underneath so the hoover slides right under.

SusanSHelit · 06/05/2026 15:48

I have a quite lightweight two seater on hard flooring, with about a three inch gap between it and the floor. So big enough for quite startling amounts of grot to get underneath it, but not big enough to get the hoover under it, so probably once a month or so.

persisted · 06/05/2026 15:55

I did mine a few months ago after I had a similar realisation that it had been a couple of years since we bought it and I never had because its bugger to move.

There was a lot of dust and a lot of spiders. Now you've made me think of it I'll need to do it again.

Monty36 · 06/05/2026 16:13

Surely Mumsnet, shouldn’t your DH be doing this ?

Contrarymary30 · 06/05/2026 16:15

About every 3 months . My son does it though .

muddyford · 06/05/2026 16:17

Under the sofa gets cleaned once a month or so.
Under the bed hasn't been done since we moved in nine years ago. It's a divan base so very close to the floor. But as I've just paid for a new base...

storminabuttercup · 06/05/2026 18:47

Used to be very seldom as had a very heavy one wedged in.

then we got carpet moths. Now I’ve got a light weight sofa with a decent gap under and non wool carpets in the living room. I get under with the hoover once a week. When I can afford it I’ll be replacing the other wool carpets until then I spray moth spray a lot!

also move the bed once a month which is hard work. But finding moths certainly made me more paranoid

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/05/2026 18:49

Mine is huge but about three or four times a year I take the mat it sits on outside to air, so it gets moved then. It's too much of a weighty struggle to do more often.

Tigercrane · 06/05/2026 18:50

What did you find under there though anything interesting?

Usedoccasionally · 06/05/2026 18:50

Once or twice a year at most - it’s huge

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/05/2026 18:51

Every time I vacuum the room, it’s on legs so easily accessible.

No dogs but still can get hoover underneath

No carpet though so often just run vileda spray under there

thinktoomuchtoooften · 05/05/2026 19:11

Every couple of weeks maybe. Takes moments.

It definitely does not take moments

Pedallleur · 06/05/2026 18:54

every couple of weeks but have a long microfiber brush thing to get anything out before I vacuum

aintnospringchicken · 06/05/2026 19:09

Every couple of months. It’s quite heavy and I can’t move it on my own.

Mine does. It’s on sliders. So I can slide it, hoover, and slide it back.
