Do people pretend not to know who people are in order to seem intelligent?

Do people pretend not to know who people are in order to seem intelligent?

This question is prompted from reading comments online re The Met Gala?

Now let me prefix this by saying I have no interest in reality tv, Showbiz mags, etc - but surely there are some people who you know who they are because everybody does!

There were people saying "who" on a photo of Kim Kardashian. I have never seen an episode of the show, have no interest in her, but of course I know who she is - because how can you not?

Another British example is Jordan/Kate Price. No interest in her, but she has literally been headline news in The UK for 20 years. If you live in The UK - surely its impossible to not at least know who she is?

Because a headline is supposed to reflect what's in the article. It did used to. It never does anymore, to make people click the link, but people still expect it to be reflective and therefore assume they can guess what's in the article.

The headline can only be a few words though.
The article will be the actual words.
I see it a lot with a news story that the headline will be something like "family desperate for mould to be fixed after suffering for 3 years" and the comments will be full of the "benefits scroungers" and "get a job and fix it yourself" type things.
But when you read the article it will clearly say the family consists of two working adults who are happy to pay to fix it but can't because of the rules (or something).
Those typing comments frequently haven't read the article.

whilst I know who these people are at least the 3 you’ve named - I don’t think I could name them from photos.

it’s not a sign of intelligence it’s a sign of not following these people kind of stories or having any interest in them

im at the age now when I just don’t know who many of the celebrities are unless they star in films or tv series I watch.

CoffeeCantata · 14/05/2026 16:53

I think, OP, you have to accept that some people really do not know who certain (ephemeral) modish celebs are. And they don't care! It may be really hard for you to accept, but try.

People who are clever, intelligent, cultured - whatever label you want to stick on them - just don't need to go in for this kind of pretence. It's not worth their time and such people generally are not so insecure that they need to try and impress others by pretending or lying about trivialities.

I take no interest in contemporary celeb culture. I don't care who knows that! I have loads of other interests which I struggle to find time for. I don't need to pretend at all.

I think you are missing the point of the post.

We were at a company get together and Jason Derulo (sp?) and entourage were at the table next to us. When they left a spokesperson came over to us to say thanks for not asking for selfies or autographs, and for not filming them. My boss was totally astonished as he genuinely had no idea who was at the next table.

Now this is one to where I could 100% say "who"?

Same here. Apparently "Jason Derulo is a globally recognized pop and R&B singer, songwriter, and dancer."
I've never heard of him.

I have zero idea either. I think my answer would have to be “I have no idea who you are dear boy, but would you like a selfie and autograph now you’ve interrupted MY evening”

mamajong · 17/05/2026 09:51

I have difficulty recognising people i actually know irl let alone celebs, I am absolutely terrible at the picture round in a pub quiz. Its actually a bit embarrassing being unable to.identify really famous people, I certainly wouldnt pretend and it doesnt make me feel superior or intelligent. Some people are bad with names and faces just as some people are bad at maths, spelling etc. Why does it matter?

AnnaQuayRules · 17/05/2026 11:22

@mamajong me too! I watched "Game Night" when it was first in cinemas and spent the whole film thinking "Gosh, Matt Damon's put on a lot of weight for this part". My son, who was with me, had to point out it was Jessie Plemmons not Matt Damon.

Yes I think I would have said "please pass on my thanks in return for not filming me or asking for selfies"

As an aside I think it is awful behaviour to film celebrities or accost them for signatures/selfies / when they aren't doing publicity work

Same. To the point I didn't recognise someone really senior at work (I had only seen them on teams, we are a huge organisation) and cracked a joke I probably wouldnt have cracked if I had realised! Thankfully they found it funny! But I was mortified when I realised Grin

Well, as I have mentioned I can guarantee that my parents will have never heard of them. And they do of course live in the world - it's just a very different world to the one you imagine everyone lives in. They are wealthy, live rurally, do not use the internet, take no interest in popular culture, and their lives revolve around classical music, gardening, and reading. Shopping is delivered or done in the very genteel nearby market town. Holidays are in rural France. And that's all fine.

What is interesting is the belief that such people simply cannot exist.

I’m not saying people like this don’t exist, I’m saying that they’re pretty rare. There’s always going to be an exception. Your parents are the exception and pretty rare - not in the sense that they’re not interested in popular culture and live a rural life - but that they have managed to get through the last 20 years without ever being involved in a conversation where Kim K was brought up, never seeing any reference to her in the media - newspapers, magazines, tv, the news, advertising. Even my dad has heard of her and he lives a similar life to your parents. Although he’s not wealthy. He lives in a tiny ramshackle house in rural Wales, but he’s got kids and grandkids who are into popular culture so sometimes these things get brought up. He also reads newspapers, and she’s been mentioned in them over the years, even in broadsheets. What has being wealthy got to do with it? You think wealth equals high class and high class equals being cultured and “above” certain aspects of pop culture like Kim K? Your snobbery is massively showing. Or is it just a humble brag that you’ve got rich parents?

This is completely not the point the OP was trying to make

My husband claimed to have no idea who David Beckham was. He is so anti sport he thinks anyone who follows/watches it is of low inteligence so I assume he thinks he's superior to them (he's not obviously)

It's ironic that it's really unintelligent to assume someone isn't clever if they enjoy sport.
