Am I profiting off DPs death?

I received the £3500 lump sum + £350 x 18 month instalments of widow's bereavement payment from the DWP and someone on MN told me I was profiting off my partner's death even though this is a lot less than he would earn for the next 40 years of his working life. I got the higher amount due to being pregnant at the time.

What else am I supposed to do? Not have paid my mortgage and refuse the money... on principle? He would want me to claim it.

Can never tell if someone is genuinely scandalised or just a deliberate ne'er do well on MN these days

Imagine being jealous of someone getting a little bit of money because they've lost their partner and father of their child...

They must be so sad in their own life!

Agreed. My friend's partner (a widower) is weathly on account life insurance paying out. (Which presumably was invested etc)

They and the kids live in a huge mansion, drive beautiful cars and seemingly want for nothing....

....I mean, want for nothing except their mum who died.

They'd give it all up to have her back I am sure.

I’m so sorry for your loss and the fact that you were pregnant at the time is just so awful.

You have a right to and deserve the payments from DWP, pay no heed to jealous people who would have snatched up that money in a heartbeat.

Stay strong and look after yourself 💐 Sending virtual hugs.

What a troll and an idiot. Just ignore them. I'm so sorry for your loss. X

What a ridiculous comment! Makes me so cross on your behalf.

The old widows pension was £750 a month until the youngest child had finished full time education (I think) but it was cut under the coalition government in order to ‘encourage widows back to work’ or some such line.

My DH died just over a year ago so I’m getting towards the end of my 18 months of payments. Ive received a lot less than he would have got in state pension even he’d lived just 2 years into retirement age.

OP, please don’t worry at all. Whoever wrote that doesn’t know what they are talking about. If I died my husband would get ~300K of life insurance, 10x my annual salary death in service lump sum plus all my pensions which is about another million.
It’s normal to look after your partner.
My friend’s husband just passed, very sadly, and he has ensured that both she and their sons are properly provided for.
