Just that really.

Seems like its coming back as an aesthetic, bit worrying for the younguns but also has me itching to light up having packed in 20 odd years ago

Yesterday Ive just remembered I saw someone standing on their doorstep smoking, young girl, heavily pregnant. I thought thats unusal to see generally, although in my job you see it all the time.

WildDenimDuck · 12/04/2026 19:39

I think it’s about time smoking and vaping were illegal in public spaces. Horrible antisocial behaviour.
Will loose appeal and be much better for health.

I was at an event at a Jazz festival last night. Massive age range, but loads of cool young things there, and even I was surprised at the amount of them who smoked.

Was this in Stroud? If so, I thought exactly the same thing. So many bright young things puffing away on their rollies.

TappyGilmore · 12/04/2026 19:51

Yes! I just noticed this the other day, having to pick my way through a crowd of smokers outside my office block, and was thinking “it’s unusual to see this many people out smoking, I thought no-one does that anymore.” In the past you might have seen a few people vaping there but not smoking.

Stroud is a weird place. I have a close relative that lives there and visit fairly often. So many incredibly rich people pretending to be hippies but don’t really get what it’s about and quite out of touch. They can’t actually explain their values - it’s like they’re all playing being hippies/ liberal/ left leaning. Never been anywhere like it or met people like it. Bloody strange place, wouldn’t surprise me at all if it was a bigger issue in Stroud!

Smoking is very ageing.

It’s probably a symbol of wealth. I think a pack comes in about £20 these days 😬

£13.00 for the cheapest -Richmond soft pack for example. B&h gold is one of the dearest they are close to £20 but average is around £15 I’d say. In my place of work (supermarket) anyway

The same with my adult kids. In fact the teenage version of them were horrified by smoking , and now my youngest son particularly, openly admits he loves it and will smoke forevermore!

I work in vascular foot clinic and spend my days taking smokers rotting feet off. Their teeth fall out too and they always get COPD and end up gasping for breath on oxygen.
The psin of vascular disease is one of the worst pains known to man and they spend their days on morphine.
Speak to your kids about smoking, its horrific.

I try really really hard to speak to my kids. I absolutely do not want them to smoke. But we’re talking about men in their 30s . We’re not talking about teenagers. There’s a big difference. As hard as I try to, I can’t influence grown men with their own lives and decisions.

MandemChickenShop · 12/04/2026 21:17

Sabrina carpet, Charlii xcx all puffing away

feellikeanalien · 12/04/2026 22:01

My DP died of lung cancer aged 50. So did his mum and his brother. They were all smokers and had been since.they were teenagers.

If I could show those who think smoking is cool what his last days were like I think they would soon change their minds.

I say this an an ex-smoker.

My mum died from COPD. She was in and out of hospital during the last few years of her life.

It is a slow and horrible way to die.

Yes same here 🤦‍♀️ he says he has no intention of giving up. He’s otherwise a really intelligent, hardworking, clean living person. 🙁

Nope, not unexpected if his peers etc. are doing the same..

My other son doesn’t smoke and thinks it’s disgusting.

Smoking is very common amongst university students

I was just about to say this. I have one about to graduate and he occasionally smokes / his flatmate is a real smoker though. And one of his old school friends has smoked for years.
It’s sooo bad for you - my DM died of lung cancer - she smoked for about 20 years but had given up 28 years prior - damage must’ve been done by then. I keep on telling the DC that & havent smoked myself since she died (I was only ever a social smoker for about 8 years when pissed!).

HoraceCope · 13/04/2026 08:20

have not noticed this

GreenGodiva · 13/04/2026 08:30

Yes but that’s the way it goes. I remember when tattoos /piercings were cool and very few people had them in mainstream society. Now it’s actually cooler to have virgin skin. Now is cool to smoke again instead of surrounding yourself with a billowing cloud of blueberry unicorn farts.

i loved smoking, really missed it and occasionally still do after a meal or when im on holiday. But the smell. I don’t miss that! Or the cost.

Or maybe they're waking up to the fact that living to extreme old age isn't always a good thing.

My DM was only 70 when she died - that’s nowhere near ‘extreme’ old age.
