Is it me or is smoking cigarettes becoming cool again?

Just that really.

Seems like its coming back as an aesthetic, bit worrying for the younguns but also has me itching to light up having packed in 20 odd years ago

Maybe if packets & anti-smoking campaigns used phrases like SMOKERS STINK or SMOKING IS STUPID as well as the health warnings they’d feel less cool. Or maybe that would increase the attraction, I don’t know.

I had the same conversation with my DC yesterday. Apparently vaping is on the way out and cigarettes are more cool now. I don’t know why and who starts this trend. I’m not fan of either but I really hate the smell of cigarette smoke

Probably not helped by the thousands of posts claiming vaping is worse/it's like having a dummy/it's completely untested like vaccines and suchlike.

Yes I certainly notice it a lot in central London among younger people, women in particular.

Also in France, often quite shocked at the number of women, young women again, smoking heavily, like chain smoking. Naice looking young women. Not so much men which I find a puzzle.

Having just buried my father in law after watching him slowly lose his life to COPD I really hope not.
I thought there was going to be a law change banning anyone born after 2009 buying cigarettes.

MundaneTuesdane · 12/04/2026 16:03

Don't think so. I smoke cigarettes and can't say I have noticed any admiring glances when I have one in public 😆

Well grab it while you can, you're the new cool young thing!!

I was on the bus yesterday with a terrible migraine, woman comes and sits behind me reeking of fags. I thought I was going to throw up.

The current gory warning pictures have acquired something of a cult appeal, so a rethink might be a good idea.

I expect it's because being skinny is back in. I skinny when I smoked. Unfortunately, when I quite I discovered sugar.

Snap. If I want to lose weight I need to smoke. It works better than anything I’ve tried for weight loss.

CremeEggThief · 12/04/2026 16:08

Nope, I cannot say I have noticed this at all in my area, the North East of England.

Most people on the estate seem to start vaping in the summer between Year 6 and Year 7 is the biggest trend I have observed over the last few years here, so similar to a lot of kids I grew up with in 1980s Ireland who started smoking by 12/13.

Ha ha, I've never been cool in my life, and now I'm in my 50s that ship has not only sailed but capsized without a trace.

Smoking for me was always about enjoyment of the cigarette, not the aesthetic.

Candleabra · 12/04/2026 16:10

I haven’t noticed this personally but I’m not exactly surrounded by hip young people. I’d be very disappointed if it’s true though.
Watching old tv programmes (and not that old…) it’s jarring how many people smoke. It’s one thing that makes sci-fi films like aliens look really weird now. I thought how good it is that smoking has become so unacceptable (but clearly I was wrong).

ohyesido · 12/04/2026 16:11

I love smoking

Wouldn’t have made a difference to me! I smoked because I enjoyed smoking and because I was addicted to nicotine!

Its interesting because I love old films and when I watch modern films its jarring to me that you dont see any smokers. Because in the real world you do.

Not something I've noticed, are these young uns all a bit thick? Do they think a cure for lung cancer has been found?

Is it about cult appeal? Or is it just that you want the product, a picture on the front isnt going to change that

I ate a whole easter egg yesterday. The 'traffic light' system on the front did not deter me

I also dont need to see a picture of a big fat lump on the front to deter me either as I see that most days in the mirror!!! lol.

WutheringHighlights · 12/04/2026 16:14

Gosh, I hope not. It’s vile. Don’t do it, OP!

That said, one can only imagine the havoc they’ll find vapes cause in the years to come, too, and they seem to have been marketing them to the young’uns in the style of lollipops.

Or maybe they're waking up to the fact that living to extreme old age isn't always a good thing.

My 20 something son smokes and honestly I’m really quite shocked. For a long time it was (thankfully) considered dirty and disgusting. There has never been smoking in our home or anywhere in his life so it was unexpected.

Nope, not unexpected if his peers etc. are doing the same..

I doubt anyone buys them because of the picture, more that, as you say, it doesn't deter, and some of them are quite interesting, I'm always pleased when I get the blackened lungs.

I was at a show a few weeks ago and lots of twenty somethings there and a load smoking outside. It just looked a bit grubby and desperate as it always did. Just the folks doing it, having that last draw before going in don’t realise it.

also these weren’t young people with a lot of money, and obvs all hooked, I felt a bit surprised and sad for them. As I used to smoke and it’s a bastard to stop.

I'm an ex Smoker (15 years). I was well aware I looked 'grubby' smoking but I did not give one single shit, as I was addicted to the nicotine not the smelly shit they put in it 🙄

I’ve been rewatching This Life and they all smoke constantly. Is it the obsession with all things 90s that’s leading this I wonder.

I have just rewatched this life too ,smoking was everywhwere in the 90,s pubs, clubs restsuraunts
I qualified as a mental health nurse in 1996 and the main lounge for patients was for smokers, staff had a designated smoking room hard to believe now.
