Is London a crime infested shithole? 👀

A woman was gang raped after leaving a nightclub, has come up in the news today. I saw someone describing London as a crime infested shithole and it's not a safe place anymore.😫

Nope, it’s perfectly safe and fine. Crime exists everywhere, the level will always be higher in large cities for obvious reasons. You could still get raped in Wiltshire but it’s obviously slightly more likely in London because there are far more men around.

I travel around a lot alone for work. The only time I’ve felt remotely unsafe in London was walking through Whitechapel at night- I don’t recommend this! I almost got mugged in Paris, on the other hand.

In Epsom. Epsom is not London.

RoniaCheetah · 12/04/2026 14:41

😂😂😂😂😂 no. It's not. All big cities have crime, as do small towns. London isn't any worse than other cities on the UK. Step away from the ranty social media and quotes from 'someone'.

I hadn't seen the story but this makes it all the more hilarious/intentionally goady.

HoppityBun · 12/04/2026 14:43

No

SecondHandEmbarrassed · 12/04/2026 14:43

My kids are born and bred here. I am encouraging them to explore other cities after graduation but both love London life, my adult son and daughter. We could easily leave if we wanted to but we all love it here and feel very safe. I do keep an eye on my phone when in central London, but that’s about it.

GonzoIsCharlesDickens · 12/04/2026 14:43

Where do you live OP?

SecondHandEmbarrassed · 12/04/2026 14:43

Hang on? Epsom, really?!!
Were you thinking of somewhere else on the tube beginning with E maybe?

WallowingInMud · 12/04/2026 14:44

The more that believe this the more we true Londoners can reclaim our city.

So - yes of course this is 💯 correct blanket assessment of a conurbation that covers many miles and 10 million plus inhabitants.

Steelworks · 12/04/2026 14:45

No. I love going to London and have confirmed a lunch date in London with a friend today.

It’s a surprise, because they don’t have sex in Epsom. Aldershot otoh…

@Netcurtainnelly

I saw someone describing London as a crime infested shithole and it's not a safe place anymore.

Who was that then?

You need to understand that this is an increasingly well-worn 'tale' told by the far-right.

(And see PP for correction about the rape story - where did you get that from that you didn't even get the right location?)

MayaPinion · 12/04/2026 14:49

Over 10 million people live in London - the same as the population of Wales and Scotland together, and almost double the population of the whole of Ireland. Of course crime happens, but it’s no worse than anywhere else per head of population.

Alittlefrustrated · 12/04/2026 14:49

I hope not. I haven't been for about 30 years but I've got a trip booked this month.

In Epsom. Epsom is not London.

And is in Surrey, one of the (if not THE) most affluent counties

Violetparis · 12/04/2026 14:50

This thread is awful.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 12/04/2026 14:51

I saw that ridiculous message on the other thread too. No, London is fine. It is a great city and safe as long as you use commonsense (as you should do anywhere) regarding pickpockets, keeping to busy roads when walking after dark (females), etc. That said, I am a Londoner and in 71 years so far (walking a lot in London alone), have not yet had my pocket picked nor had anyone attack me (like anywhere, I did encounter a few flashers when I was younger, as did most people in my age group but I have met one or two in the countryside too).

zurigo · 12/04/2026 14:52

It's bad for petty crime, that's for sure. Both my DH and my DS have had their mobile phones stolen - DH's was snatched out of his hand outside a tube station (and yes, he knows what an idiot he was to have it out), and DS and his friend were mugged for theirs on the tube. It's always been bad though. I was robbed and mugged in London in the early 2000s too. I am now very careful and very vigilant. I don't wear nice jewellery, I don't get my phone out in public unless I've checked my surroundings first - it's a shit way to have to live.

x2boys · 12/04/2026 14:52

I havent been to London for many years
But would assume London like most big cities has its fair share of crime but.to write off the entire city,is a bit ridiculous.

Glad you and others on the thread find the poor young woman’s gang rape such good comedy material. Gross.

All big cities have crime … I once had to tackled a pickpocket in Rome.

That said, I don’t think that the punishments are harsh enough to be a deterrent. Petty crime is probably more impactful, on a day to day level, for most people, than major crime … but the resources don’t seem to be there to deal with it.

i feel less safe walking in Blackpool in the evening, than I’ve ever felt in London

There is a link between poverty and crime, and I guess you lots of people in the former category in London.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/04/2026 14:58

No, London is not a crime infested shithole.
This crime took place in Epsom, which is in Surrey.

It took place outside the Methodist church in Ashley Road. The location is well lit, on a busyish road where even between 2am and 4am, there would usually be passing traffic. To hear of this happening there astounds me.
On the whole Epsom is a pleasant, safe, market town, less of a racing town than it used to be and the student population has grown exponentially. Like all towns ot has its seedy pockets and n'er do wells but fewer than elsewhere. Generally crime is low here although the centre of town can be rowdy at closing time.
I hope the young woman is getting all the help and support she needs, and more.
It is notable that there was a murder in adjoining Ewell not so long ago - a young man, killed by young men. DH has noted that there are more dodgy characters on the later trains coming in from London, post 8pm/9pm and there are some rumblings of County Lines activity.
