What the hell happened to Cornettos?

They used to be posh. If you bought a Cornetto you were a classy discerning customer with an edge of sophistication that Mr Whippy purchasers could only dream of. From the highly concentrated syrup, to the smooth and luscious ice cream, to the thick crisp cone, they were a portable culinary delight.

So when I bought a pack in Home Bargains I congratulated myself on having come so far in the world that I could acquire not only one but six of these beauties all for myself.

But what a disappointment. They're tiny, for starters. The tiny squirts of syrup are pale and taste like a cold vegan fruit pastille. The ice cream is like a frozen version of some dodgy grey-goods marshmallow. And the cone is pale and soft. The entire thing is an abomination.

This happens so often now - I buy something to eat that used to be nice and it turns out it's now rubbish. Who the fuck decided to make our food nasty?

Are they branded Cornettos?

UncannyToad · 10/04/2026 11:18

I noticed this last year - apparently the ones in packs are actually smaller than the individually sold ones. Shame!

AgnesX · 10/04/2026 11:18

Like so many things they're being made with cheap and nasty ingredients and unfortunately less of the ingredients full stop.

LittleMissClutter · 10/04/2026 11:19

YANBU, it's the same with most things.

However, I take issue with you saying they were better than Mr Whippy.

No-one wants to hear the ice cream van chimes and have their mum tell them "there's Cornettos in the freezer".

No-one.

GenerallyConfusedAboutGenes · 10/04/2026 11:19

Quite often the packs sold in Home Bargains, Poundland and the like are smaller than what you'd get elsewhere as they're sold to a price point.

However, I agree on the taste and consistency of the ice cream, even on standard sizes, no idea what's happened to it in the past few years so I stopped buying them.

WonderingWanda · 10/04/2026 11:22

Cornetto's were posh in the same way Vienetta was posh when you were a child used to basic choc ices or ice pops and no knowledge of actual Italian gelato, but really wasn't posh.....which is why both can be purchased from Home Bargains....which is also not posh.

Midlifecrisisaverted · 10/04/2026 11:23

Better than Mr Whippy?! Wash your mouth out.....

Cornettos had operas written about them and came from Venice, which is v posh and also foreign and sophisticated.

They’re nasty now. The cones are so soggy. But then most things are nasty now. The quality of almost everything has diminished while prices have gone up.

EndorsingPRActice · 10/04/2026 11:37

It’s the soft yucky cornets that get me, you are right OP, cornets, even ones bought at home bargains in a 6 pack, were much nicer 6/7 years ago. I used to buy them, I don’t anymore

EndorsingPRActice · 10/04/2026 11:37

Meant to say cornettoes not cornets

Wonder if its the same for magnums? I bought a single one last summer from tesco - you can get it as the side for a meal deal.

you think its a good deal till you realise its half the size it used to be 😂😂

as for cornettos I usually buy the own brand ones nowadays, they do the job without me experiencing what the OP did & paying extortionate amounts of money for the pleasure

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/04/2026 11:40

It’s happening to everything that was once nice

LiveLaughLogLady · 10/04/2026 11:41

I remember in the 80s they were considered "adult" ice-cream and were more expensive than a Fab or Funny Feet and other "kids" ice-cream. I was never allowed one due to cost, but probably would've preferred a Fab anyway!

Besidemyselfwithworry · 10/04/2026 11:42

The Aldi strawberry version of a cornetto is really nice to try

Sskka · 10/04/2026 11:45

It’s the iron law of how we live now – everything must be enshittified, even cornetti. I saw it explained here.

What the hell happened to Cornettos?
Ochtawa · 10/04/2026 11:46

@LiveLaughLogLady yes, that's my experience too. My mum used to tell me we couldn't afford them, so when I got six yesterday I remembered that and thought: ha, who's winning now?

Well, not me, with my soft floofy cones of disappointment.

OP posts:
Goodallweek · 10/04/2026 11:48

They're so disappointing now, for me, that's mainly because the cones are so soft. Why have they changed the way they make the cones to make them so soft, who thinks that's better!

Arlanymor · 10/04/2026 11:49

Fruit gums were better when they were hard and had the scored surface, not these bendy fruit-stamp motif nonsenses that we have now. Just saying...

SqueakyFromme · 10/04/2026 11:51

Aldi versions are lovely

If you want to see a teeny tiny Magnum, buy a box of minis. I ordered them in an online shop and upon opening one thought Gulliver might like to accompany me on my adventure in Lilliput. 🤣🤣🤣

Motomum23 · 10/04/2026 11:55

Oh come on OP - you'd have chosen a cornetto as a child over Gino Ginelli ice cream that was ssoooo good only my mum was allowed to eat it??? 🤪🤪 and nothing is as good as whippy ice cream that's why pregnant ladies aren't allowed it!

ThejoyofNC · 10/04/2026 12:07

I bought some recently and thought the same, I was pretty pissed off after paying nearly double for the branded ones.

I wonder if anyone can recommend any good own brand ones?

Sartre · 10/04/2026 12:09

The branded ones are AWFUL. The chocolate at the bottom is hideous and yes, they’re tiny. Morrisons hands down do the best ones, I’ve tried from just about every supermarket and theirs are best.

SwatTheTwit · 10/04/2026 12:11

Posh? Cornettos?

I thought the pinnacle of sophistication would have been the Magnum Classic
