(Lighthearted!)

Is anyone else NOT loving the return of the brighter evenings?

I have to say I love seeing the dark nights roll in, being able to cosy up on the sofa with candles, lamps and blankets and watch TV without feeling remotely guilty about it. Ds going to sleep super easy because he's seen it get dark and knows it's that time.

As a lone parent of a small child I feel a bit trapped in the house when it's a nice evening and he's in bed! Like I should be out making the most of it and I can't!

So
YABU- Wise up bright nights are the best
YANBU- I also love the dark evening coziness

Oh no I love the light evenings!

ThatFairy · 29/03/2026 18:45

Yeah I hate the light

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 29/03/2026 18:46

I loathe the dark, the lighter the evenings the better!

get block out curtains and close them all at his bedtime to make the house darker and cozy.

Catladywithacat · 29/03/2026 18:49

Definitely unpopular opinion the light evenings are beautiful

Topseyt123 · 29/03/2026 18:50

I much prefer the lighter evenings. I find the dark autumn and winter evenings so depressing.

Do you have a garden? When the weather warms up get a nice lounger and sit outside with a book/radio/cool drink.

PolkaDotPorridge · 29/03/2026 19:03

We have lots of dogs, I prefer not walking them in the dark so I love the light nights!

Bundleflower · 29/03/2026 19:05

How can you even say these things!?

If I knew how to block you I would 🤯

Allswellthatendswelll · 29/03/2026 19:06

I love the light evenings but I completely get what you mean about small children and feeling trapped in the house! Joining an outdoor pool and doing evening dog walks help but only if DH not working late.

GardeningMummy · 29/03/2026 19:07

As a gardener 👨‍🌾 , I love it! I know what you mean though. When I lived in flats pre-kid, I hated lighter nights as I was always stuck in, whilst everyone else had fun

I wonder if OP perhaps doesn’t have a garden or a dog to walk? She also sounds like a single parent from what she’s said in her op and I’ve been there; When my child was small, we had a house with no garden and let me tell you, no matter how many friends you have, having a small child as a single mum, means you’re stuck inside from 5/6pm onwards even when it’s light nights, it’s depressing.

Toastersandkettles · 29/03/2026 19:12

I like the dark nights in the run up to Christmas. After that I'm over it and enjoy the lighter evenings.

ThatFairy · 29/03/2026 18:45

Yeah I hate the light

Do you hate garlic too, by any chance?

JumpinJehoshaphat · 29/03/2026 19:13

I love the winter nights and having the wood burner going, candles etc. But I’m so ready for spring by now and I love the optimism of the evenings drawing out. I just hope we get some good weather.

OriginalUsername2 · 29/03/2026 19:15

Have you got a garden you can sit out in with a nice drink and a book?

This is exactly it. My ds is in bed asleep by 6.30pm at the latest so I can't leave the house once he's down as it would mean leaving him alone. Lone parent so this is the case for every night. Couldn't walk a dog after this time even if I had one!

I do have a wee garden but it's not great (very boggy though hoping this will dry up a bit in hotter weather) and as we're temporarily renting it's not really worth me putting money into doing it up. It's also in shade 100% of the day which is a shame.

We've recently moved so no friends local to come visit us yet.

i hate the light evenings. With a passion. But not as much as I hate the light mornings. I’m already starting to feel anxious and miserable about it.

Katemax82 · 29/03/2026 19:21

I like lighter evenings but hate summer days when my husband decides to mow the lawn...qué 8 hours of him poncing around topless covered in tanning oil while I'm stuck inside looking after the kids

JumpinJehoshaphat · 29/03/2026 19:30

Much as I love the light evenings, the light
mornings when they come can do one. We live in the countryside and we have ducks. The cacophony from the ducks and the birds from 4am means I have to wear earplugs.

Auroraloves · 29/03/2026 19:32

I prefer when it gets dark between 8 and 9. Light any time after that I can’t wind down well

ilovesooty · 29/03/2026 19:36

I love light mornings and evenings.

The word cosy sets my teeth on edge

I hate candles and won't have them in the house

We're all different.

TON618 · 29/03/2026 19:55

I understand your situation, OP, but personally I adore them. We can get out and do more stuff outside in the evening instead of having to use my flexi to knock off work early in the winter time. As I write this it's almost 8pm and we still have usable light.

I am just a night creature. I have delayed sleep phase syndrome and find it hard to hold down a life in the daytime without pills. My eyes are also suited for the dark and can't handle bright lights. I'm sure there was some evolutionary advantage before modern times

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/03/2026 20:26

YABU. I love lighter evenings and mornings.
