NO POSTS PLEASE UNTIL THREAD 25 IS FULL

Please see the OP of Thread 25 for all the links to The Observer's reporting and podcast series, our threads one to 24 and so on.

After 25,000 posts there are still new things to discuss:
BBC Sounds - Secrets of the Salt Path - Available Episodes
If you are posting about a podcast, please start your post with the episode number you are commenting on, for clarity and to help others avoid spoilers if they wish to do so.

New posters joining us in the genuine spirit of our civil discourse are welcome. It would be helpful to get the background from at least some of the Observer exposé items before posting. The Observer's excellent podcast series The Walkers (link in Thread 25) covers most things.
To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Remember, even Hollywood rabbits attract the odd flea: please do not engage with drive-by scolders who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. For over 8 months we have done amazingly well together for 25 very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in our usual reasonable and respectful fashion is very welcome.

As ever, as we embark on our 26th thread riding the community charabanc, keep to the path, no saltiness, eat fudge and drink cider.

No questions, just an order to get into the stocks and get pelted with rotten tomatoes and never to write any books ever again.

I secretly think it's because they have long words in and no sex

Come on Vroomie, please write in a character dipping a FOF in a flagon of cider just for your charabanc mates?!

I'm going to put the word 'charabanc in my next book (which isn't due out until next year) just for you lot. So if you're reading a women's fiction/romance/comedy book and you read the word 'charabanc' - you will know it's me!

How will we find you?? I think we need a clue!

I can't give you too much - titles might change etc.

But the book is set in Dorset and features a lighthouse...

(Thus cursing you all to have to read EVERY book set in Dorset with a lighthouse in...)

I feel really excited! 😃

For my amusement, I’ve been working on a cartoon of the Salt path pair with a little inspiration from that Edward Lear Jumblies poem.

My second choice was going to be charabanc! I was also going to ask you whether charabanc counts as A Long Word. Perhaps we can look forward to FOF-dipping and cider in the future, but charabanc will definitely do for now. Marvellous. Keep us informed, Vroomie!

I now have visions of charabanceers scanning through Amazon and bookshops next year, tossing piles of discarded books left and right and muttering "it must be in here somewhere!"

Peladon · 26/04/2026 08:38

Will it be called Five Go Mad In Dorset, and feature the dynamic duo, their two friends from oop north, and Timmy the dog?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · Yesterday 17:45

Watching a new YouTube summary of the whole TSP thing. I can't post a link because, despite the fact that I am watching it RIGHT NOW on the TV, my laptop can't find it anywhere.

It's a channel called Scandal, and it's titled 'She Fooled 2 Million Readers (Then it Got Worse). Seems pretty thorough and is fairly damning.

HatStickBoots · Yesterday 18:04

I’ll try and find it! 🍿

Please do, I am baffled as to why searching for it on the laptop isn't coming up with anything at all, yet it's right THERE IN FRONT OF ME!

It's nothing we don't already know, but a good place to point people who know nothing about the whole scandal as he covers everything in detail.

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat and @MulberryBrandy : thank you for posting the Youtube video. The Youtube comments below the video were interesting.

HatStickBoots · Yesterday 23:08

Thank you so much! I couldn’t find it either. I found a lot of other Salt Path stuff. I’ll have to watch it tomorrow now.

Yes, weirdly it won't come up in any searches, but I can find it on my history. So my TV acknowledges it exists, but my laptop doesn't... Hmmm. Perhaps the mystical 'handwavium' is at work...

I trust we'll find it in a flash working as a team based on these threads!
