Eating sushi on a train… AIBU?

I had to grab some dinner on the way to the train. I didn’t fancy a sandwich so I got sushi. I didn’t give it any thought at the time but felt somewhat self conscious as it got it out on the train. Had I thought about it, I probably wouldn’t have got it. So I wondered how many people would be appalled if someone ate sushi on their train?

FWIW I don’t think sushi smells particularly but I accept I like it so maybe I don’t notice.

It's better than tuna sandwiches

ZenNudist · 17/03/2026 19:16

Wha? I wouldn't give it a first thought

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2026 19:16

Wouldn’t bother me at all.
Now if you had an egg sandwich I would be trying not to vomit as I find the smell revolting.

likelysuspect · 17/03/2026 19:16

I had a train journey recently and had to eat my tea which was a small pot of chicken and moroccan chickpeas that I had cooked up.

I went to the loo later and saw people eating all sort of things, one woman had a pot of salad in a tupperware pot with salad cream, another couple had toasted sandwiches they'd obviously bought at the station

Not sure what the difference is really.

hahabahbag · 17/03/2026 19:17

Why would it be an issue? I’ve eaten many things on trains, they even sell hot food like curry on the train (or did before I moved area)

NannyR · 17/03/2026 19:19

I wouldn't think twice about it. It doesn't really smell any worse than a sandwich, hot fast food smells far worse.

SMM2020 · 17/03/2026 19:19

I’m funny with smells especially certain foods on the train but sushi wouldn’t bother me. I did once have a bloke sit next to me though, open his Tesco meal deal Tuna Mayo followed by pickled onion monster munch…I was pregnant as well and legitimately thought I was going to pass out from the smell, absolute wrong’un!

2026Y · 17/03/2026 19:19

Ah - interesting… I thought I might be lambasted for imposing my raw fish on other passengers.

I agree and I was thinking this to myself as I scoffed my sushi self consciously

Sushi isn't smelly. Hot food and salty smacks are worse.

KellsBells7 · 17/03/2026 19:23

I have issues with smells on trains but sushi wouldn’t trouble me. Tuna and eggs do even though I eat both - just not on trains (or in the office)!

user88766554 · 17/03/2026 19:25

I’d have been silently hating you. Everything smells much more intense in menopause, and I always did find strong smells in confined spaces difficult to manage. Still not over the people in front of me eating stinky burgers during Hamilton.

ThatFairy · 17/03/2026 19:26

This reminds me of a court case where the defendant threatened a woman on a train for eating egg sandwiches. She called the woman disgusting and threatened her saying "do you know who I am ?"

Crazy

ohyesido · 17/03/2026 19:28

I wouldn’t think anything of it, I have to listen to (and smell) people eat McDonald’s on trains regularly

Chestnutmarenutjob · 17/03/2026 19:30

I once had to endure a flight next to a man who got out a tuna and onion (who the fuck eats that anyway?!) sandwich to eat. It was honestly dreadful.

sushi though, I don’t think it smells too bad.

StrawberrySquash · 17/03/2026 19:36

It's fine. Far nicer than Burger King to smell.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/03/2026 19:41

I'm allergic to fish and the smell really affects me - I wouldn't be at all bothered about sushi, it doesn't really smell.

Tuna is a different ball game entirely, and don't get me started on bloody tinned sardines!

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 17/03/2026 19:50

Very normal thing to get at a train station go your journey

Tinned sardines on a train? 😱 that would be madness

I’d be very jealous if someone got sushi out on a train 🤤

Idk lol 😅

Sushi doesn’t smell or make loud crunch noises.
