To ask what you do for "me" time?

Posted for traffic, and because I didn't really know where else to post this.

I didn't get time to myself for a very long number of years since having DC1, and for the last almost 6 years cared for my kids alone (Ex ever helped, didn't get a minute off from the kids). However, I'm now in a position where I'm finding myself with a lot more free time, yet, I don't know what to do with it.

I do the normal cleaning and errands, etc., but want to do something for myself or get some new hobbies or something. I'm highly uninspired after freshly coming out of SAHM life, and thus I am asking everybody, what do you do for yourself during your free time / 'me' time?

I was thinking about going back to the gym, getting my nails/hair done, but want to try something new! Any ideas?

Read a book something nice to munch all enjoyed in peace in the bedroom.

Justploddingonandon · 06/03/2026 19:16

I’m still in the not getting a lot of free time stage, but go to the gym, have long baths, read, do Lego ( they have sets aimed at adults that look really nice when complete) and watch the sorts of tv programmes my DH hates. Not all at the same time obviously.

Cosmication · 06/03/2026 19:17

Mooch around a lovely town and a bookshop, go to a nice cafe, drink tea and read book. Write in my journal, leisurely.

Also like reading a book in the bath, or finding interesting events to go to.

Simonjt · 06/03/2026 19:19

I go to the gym, which is also some peoples hell.

Bebeandgang · 06/03/2026 19:22

I run (currently training for a half marathon) after losing myself following two kids and it feels so amazing getting my fitness back, regular fresh air and the sound of silence away from chaos. I also go for coffees alone and read. I'm really getting back into reading since tiring of social media and I'm really enjoying it.

SpanThatWorld · 06/03/2026 19:24

I swim in cold water and do woodwork

Wreckinball · 06/03/2026 19:28

Buy a £50-£100 keyboard and start piano - either you tube or suvscribe to on line or real tuition. Maybe singing local choir and get to meet new people too. Walking groups also cater for people who cater for wide range of interests from rambles to mountaineering

I cannot WAIT for my golf era. Imagine having a whole day to spend out in the peace and quiet!

OP my ‘me time’ includes - running, walking alone or with friends, practising piano, going to gigs.

Quite a few suggesting lego, I hadn't thought of it! Might give it a go actually. Would have to get some shelves to stop my 2yo from destroying it lol

If you ever do decide to have a go at golf lessons with a good pro are absolutely key. It's a great hobby!

Go for a bike ride
Yoga class
Meet a friend for a walk or a coffee
Do some knitting, listening to an audiobook
Watch something on telly that no one likes apart from you

Babsandherwabs · 06/03/2026 19:34

Oo I’ve thought of more stuff I do, albeit around the family. Still fills my cup!:

watercolours
clay (sculpd do good kits)
Lino printing
crochet - made looooads of newborn hats for local maternity unit ☺️

loftpine · 06/03/2026 19:35

When my dcs are at school I like getting out to see culture - art exhibitions, theatre matinees, museums. It's nice and quiet on weekdays. For more active days I go rollerblading.

It really is lovely. I do work full time and in the summer a few holes after work are so nice... wandering around in peace, hitting my shots and you see deer, rabbits etc coming out.

GroovyChick87 · 06/03/2026 19:37

Masturbate and a daytime nap. Reading. Colouring in. Drink champagne.

HollyhockDays · 06/03/2026 19:40

Walk the dog and listen to podcasts.
Potter in the garden.
Do the big shop at a nice shopping centre and have pootle round the shops at the same time.
Read the papers on a Saturday.

My first thought was to get into reading, but im not sure where to start! Any genre recommendations? I like all kinds of films so feel like I'd like all kinds of books, too. The only genre I don't care for is sci-fi (star wars, LoTR, etc).

Wow, this all sounds so up my street! I got into knitting right before DC1 was born, but didnt have any time to do it after that. I would like to learn crochet as something new to do, I actually bought some stuff to learn not long ago, you just reminded me!

What is lino printing? It sounds fun!

Clay modelling sounds great, too. Bought my son a little pottery wheel for his birthday and we had so much fun with it!

Really great suggestions, thank you! 😊

Would be giving a standing ovation if it were all at the same time haha. They all sound great. You know, I can't remember the last time I had a nice long bath that wasn't rushed. First thing I'm doing Monday!
