To ask what you do for "me" time?

Posted for traffic, and because I didn't really know where else to post this.

I didn't get time to myself for a very long number of years since having DC1, and for the last almost 6 years cared for my kids alone (Ex ever helped, didn't get a minute off from the kids). However, I'm now in a position where I'm finding myself with a lot more free time, yet, I don't know what to do with it.

I do the normal cleaning and errands, etc., but want to do something for myself or get some new hobbies or something. I'm highly uninspired after freshly coming out of SAHM life, and thus I am asking everybody, what do you do for yourself during your free time / 'me' time?

I was thinking about going back to the gym, getting my nails/hair done, but want to try something new! Any ideas?

I don’t get a single minute of me time as I work FT and have young DC with no family help.

But when I do, I’m going to take up padel.

I love going to the cinema alone. It's so relaxing!
I get my my nails done every few weeks.
I like browsing book shops and record shops, I have a large vinyl record collection and although it's an expensive (and addictive!) hobby and takes up lots of space it brings me a lot of joy and I like the idea of passing my collection on to my DC one day.
I spend a lot of time reading, either in the bath or curled up on the sofa with my cat and a glass of wine.
I like walking while listening to music or podcasts but only in decent weather!
I regularly go to live music, comedy and art exhibitions with a friend but have also done this on my own.
I also love the theatre and an NT at Home subscription is one of the best things I've ever treated myself to.

I scroll online for awhile with a cuppa and snack, then meditate with my cat!

These all sound right up my street! I was looking yesterday at getting a sewing machine to make clothes; im very much a 'fashionista' so I think i might go for it!

The DIY type classes sound great too, im gonna Google anything like that near me now. Would love to get into soap or perfume making or something, it sounds hands on and fun.

As a very short person, horse-riding terrifies me. I rode my friend's horse when I was 8 and it just started running around like mad while the instructor tried to stop it and it was honestly both hilarious and traumatising lmao. I do love horses though, I wouldn't mind caring for them, but maybe not riding them.

I cant believe you do aerial silks as well, check you out! You sound so confident doing all these things, and i can only admire from a distance. Do you do all of these things alone? My friend wanted to try pole dance fitness classes but I just dont know if I can get over people calling me a stripper if they found out lol. I think I would enjoy doing it though as calisthenics used to be my forte!

We are very lucky to have a variety of these things, including a big handicraft school, in our local community!

Erm... carriage driving lessons, maybe? That's also fun, but expensive, and I have to travel quite a way for that. I'd love to have a go at riding side-saddle, but that's even more niche and further away.

Yes, I do everything on my own. It's a way to meet people in the area (I have a job with long hours that means that it's otherwise a very small world), and I don't let not having a friend to go with stop me from doing things that interest me. I started small, like just going swimming or to the pictures on my own, but have built it up over the years. I've come a long way from the person who left school with so little confidence that I rarely spoke to anyone outside of my family!

Oh, and I am going away on holiday (again, by myself) in relation to another niche interest. I'm quite looking forward to it!

I play video games on the family PC. On my rotation are: Stardew Valley, Cities Skylines, mini motorways, zoo and rollercoaster Tycoon, oxygen not included. I typically will get obsessed with one game for a while.

Ooo thank you for pictures ! They are magnificent. I absolutely love lego I'm itching to get rivendell but my three year old is like godzilla stomping about and putting tiny pieces in every crevice in our house just for fun 🫠 so I will patiently wait till he becomes a more reasonable tyrant.

Think
exercise
learning
volunteeeing

exercise - walk, run, yoga, weights, gym, Zumba ../. So many options
learning - art, music ) always fancied piano? ) , languages ( eg planning a holiday learn the language )
volunteering - turn up at a litter pick or become a scout leader - small or large it all matters

try different things for a few months until you find what sticks

AlwaysPurple · 08/03/2026 16:18

Baking
Zumba
Reading - I joined the library which means free books, and also a deadline to read them by!
Gardening
Jigsaws - charity shops often have some

AndresyFiorella · 08/03/2026 16:29

Reading, running, cold water swimming, sing in a Rock Choir. What I'd really like to do is get back into Am Dram and be in plays and musicals, but I think that will have to wait until I'm no longer a full time teacher!

Jellycatspyjamas · 08/03/2026 16:34

I do crochet (very beginner), cross stitch, baking. I love reading so tucked up in bed with a good book and a coffee. I have a dog that needs walked too - an early Sunday morning walk in the woods near me is absolute bliss, back home for a nice coffee and a shower.

The best thing to do is just try things out - you don’t need to be great at them.

thisisajoke22 · 08/03/2026 16:36

I go to the gym 5 times a week, read lots and have an allotment. My MH is pretty good tbh

Pricesandvices · 08/03/2026 16:45

Gym and running.

Pineapples123 · 08/03/2026 17:03

I have Sundays to myself and every week I wake up at 6.30, have coffee in bed while I read for an hour, then take off the sheets and air the room out, put a wash on, walk the dog, clean the house, have breakfast and make some bread, pick up some fresh flowers, then have any everything shower and do things like paint my nails/toes, whiten my teeth etc. I organise all my supplements and meds for the week too. It’s the same every week but I love how slow and peaceful it feels, and it’s feels totally indulgent because it’s all in my control. I always end up with spare time to do whatever I fancy- today I’ve done an embroidery kit and baked a carrot cake!

Pineapples123 · 08/03/2026 17:05

I also always have lovely music on in the background- it makes me feel like I’m in a movie 🤭
