Skiing in jeans

Well, not actually skiing.

I’m going to a ski resort for a few days, not to ski, to see snow-so building snowmen, sledging etc, are jeans weird? What to wear? I have boots, warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves etc
Dh says jeans are weird

Are they?

You'll stick out like a sore thumb. You will be cold, wet and unable to manoeuvre your legs freely.

Why wouldn't you want to wear themal ski trousers?

Natsku · 06/03/2026 08:06

Depends on the kind of snow, some snow is very dry so jeans don't matter at all, but in that snow you won't be making snowmen anyway as it doesn't hold together.

Jeans aren't weird but they're not very comfortable for doing things in snow, though if you have waterproof overtrousers on top of them it won't matter much (I've been sledging in jeans and overtrousers. Hell I've been sledging in just jeans but I don't recommend that) but best is leggings/joggers underneath waterproof overtrousers. Make sure you have two pairs of decent gloves too, and warm socks and decent footwear.

You will instantly stick out as someone with no experience of either snow nor cold. It may be sunny in pictures of snowy places, but it is cold. The snow may look powdery and fluffy, but the moment you start to handle it to build your snowman, it'll start to impact and clump, melting into any non-waterproof garments you're wearing. You'll be miserable.

It’s not always cold. It was 12C in the Alps last week. I skied without a jacket on. Next week here in northern New England it will be 15C and I plan to be skiing in a t-shirt.

Would waterproof trousers be ok? Over jeans or leggings?

My parents in New England used to ski in jeans, t-shirts, hand-knitted sweaters and leather hiking boots with cable bindings! No helmets or anything waterproof at all.

Yup, that will work fine. Over leggings will be more comfortable than over jeans but both will work.

Great, thank you, it’s just to sledge/play in the snow

No way! Jeans would be so uncomfortable to ski in, especially if you get wet. You’ll look really strange too. Just pick up a cheap pair of ski pants - there’s loads of sales on at the moment. Enjoy your trip.

Jeans are already the most uncomfortable thing to wear in central London when it's raining, it would be worst in a ski resort - and they can be quite heavy in your luggage anyway.

Snow is cold and wet - ski salopette that you can buy for very little on Vinted would be first choice, waterproof trousers at worst, but more faff than necessary

CreepyCoupe · 06/03/2026 15:14

Absolutely not. Get some salopettes.

Brr. Yuck.

Whilst it might appear people ski/board in jeans, typically they don't, they're wearing waterproofed, lined 'ski jeans' or they've got some thermal base layers on underneath that would stop wet denim getting near skin.

Just normal high street jeans will, as everyone said, get wet, be really heavy, chafe and just be really really cold.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 06/03/2026 16:13

Jeans are the worst thing you would wear because if you slip and fall on your arse they’ll get wet, heavy, cold and stiff.

YOU WILL STILL GET WET SLEDGING AND PLAYING. You also need to be able to move flexibly when getting up and down from a sledge which jeans aren’t good for.

Yes. Over leggings.

Don’t wear jeans when playing in the snow/sledging, you’ll very quickly get utterly soaked. Leggings and waterproof trousers would be ok but infinitely better would be leggings/thermals with ski trousers on top. They will be a lot warmer than just waterproof trousers, everyone wears ski trousers, whether they are skiing or not so I wouldn’t worry about that. They are the best protection against the cold, snow, wet etc. I would also invest in some snow boots or fully waterproof boots as well, you can wear trainers/normal boots when out in the town area but definitely not when playing/walking/sledging in the snow. Some ski trousers/boots etc are really not expensive, try Decathalon, in store or online or TK Max usually has a good ski section this time of year, if you have one near you. Good luck, hope you have a fab time!

user1498809986 · 06/03/2026 18:35

Also get some good ski gloves, normal gloves won’t cut it in the snow. Again Decathalon or TK Max or Go outdoors would be a good bet.
