Skiing in jeans

Well, not actually skiing.

I’m going to a ski resort for a few days, not to ski, to see snow-so building snowmen, sledging etc, are jeans weird? What to wear? I have boots, warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves etc
Dh says jeans are weird

Are they?

OP posts:

I guess this shows how old I am, I learnt to ski in jeans !

IngridBurger · 05/03/2026 22:51

How much are you spending on travel, accommodation and food? Suitable salopettes will be a tiny fraction of the overall cost and enable you to enjoy your time without worrying about getting your legs wet. Jeans is a seriously dumb plan.

NugsNotDrugs · 05/03/2026 23:00

Don’t forget sunglasses too!

Thecows · 05/03/2026 23:19

She's not skiing!! So many people not even read the basic premise of the thread 🤨.

That said, I wouldn't wear jeans anywhere in a place with or near snow.

My 78 year old mum did not learn to ski in jeans… She learnt in C&A polyester 😀

Take the jeans for the evening but you’ll need a base layer and salopettes and waterproof gloves for enjoying the snow during the day. Depending on the temperature you might want to invest in merino wool ski socks too.

They tend to be locals, in my experience, so they’re not out all day on the slopes and they just go home and change.

OP isn’t out on the slopes all day either. Everyone is answering as if it’s a huge no no to wear them in the resort, which is going to lead to OP spending money on new clothes. She should rather consider the actual temperature and her actual activities. If she changes her mind she may be able to rent trousers at the ski hire.

GranolaBaker · 06/03/2026 06:20

Well the guys at school from farms used to ski in jeans but this was NZ and they’re a hardy lot. I think you’ve got the message jeans rolling around playing in the snow - not good. Inside hotel, restaurant etc - fine.

BoldBlueZebra · 06/03/2026 06:26

Ok so ski wear is not a fashion statement. Appropriate clothing can save your life in the event of an avalanche or if you are injured and aren’t easily retrieved. Skiing is still a very dangerous activity in a high risk environment. Prepare accordingly- people have to risk their own lives to rescue you if the worst happens the least you can do is be properly prepared

WaltzingWaters · 06/03/2026 06:29

I’ve skied in jeans a few times. Was fine. Also used to go for walks in the snow in jeans and be fine. But if you’re going to be sledding or kneeing in the snow building snowmen type thing, you’ll want something waterproof and warmer. It really depends on the conditions and what you’ll be doing. I’d suggest a cheap pair of sallopetts. And waterproof gloves. And sun cream and sunglasses.

FirstdatesFred · 06/03/2026 06:37

I have been at a ski resort in jeans before up the mountain, but not ski ing (when kids were young). Needed thermal leggings underneath though, and good snow boots

Relaxd · 06/03/2026 06:44

Thermal layers, waterproof trousers. Decathlon sell cheaply enough. Why be uncomfortable and wet.

No - she's sledging, much more likely to get her legs/bum wet.

Maddy70 · 06/03/2026 06:58

Wet jeans will be cold and uncomfortable. Anything but jeans

FastFood · 06/03/2026 07:07

I wear jeans all the time when I'm not skiing. Even a skirt and thick tights sometimes, if its to go to go shopping or drink a mug of mulled wine.
Depends on what type of ski station you're going, but footwear may be the deal breaker.
I go to La Plagne, there are no roads, no pavement per se, so you're always walking on snow, in which case proper après-ski boots are a must.

Myskyscolour · 06/03/2026 07:14

It's a certain point of pride at various down-to-earth Canadian ski hills to rock the denim
It was kind of cool to ski in jeans in the 90s if you were a posh teen in Europe who wanted to show they were a bit of a rebel.

SnickerboaHoppfallera · 06/03/2026 07:20

You will instantly stick out as someone with no experience of either snow nor cold. It may be sunny in pictures of snowy places, but it is cold. The snow may look powdery and fluffy, but the moment you start to handle it to build your snowman, it'll start to impact and clump, melting into any non-waterproof garments you're wearing. You'll be miserable.

Needlenardlenoo · 06/03/2026 07:27

I would go with Sweaty Betty running leggings with the furry insides.

APatternGrammar · 06/03/2026 07:27

I went skiing ten days ago, there were people sitting on the restaurant terrace in leggings and bikini tops. Really, check the temperature of the place you are actually going before deciding.

DancingNotDrowning · 06/03/2026 07:33

If you’re coming into contact with snow (sledging /snow man building) jeans aren’t the best option. They’ll get wet and take ages to dry.

but for walking round a resort, sitting in bars etc they’re ok as long as it’s not actively snowing.

I tend to wear thick fleece lined leggings and snow boots when I’m not skiing. They dry much quicker if they do get wet and are warmer.

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/03/2026 07:35

This feels like the mirror image of the guy I saw at a beach party in the South of France in July wearing skinny jeans, a tailored shirt and lace up leather shoes (the temperature was hitting 35 degrees).

Jeans are great but suck in very cold or hot weather.

Specialagentblond · 05/03/2026 20:44

Yes definitely wear Salopettes with some base layers. I go cheap ones from Lidl for 12quid this season.

Or look on Vinted. Went to ski resort not to ski bought salopettes in Lidl and then sold them on Vinted.

Jellyslothbridge · 06/03/2026 08:00

Ideally for any activities in the snow something warm and waterproof. Jeans become heavy and chaff when wet and won't be dry for the next day. Stretchy sportswear or travelling hiking trousers could be an alternative to ski - wear but may be cold and get wet so you would need to take that into account.
When it's been warm I have worn leggings and a fleece but it still gets cold and windy on lifts.
