To think colleagues joke was NOT acceptable?

LaurenkI · 02/03/2026 18:10

My team has a meeting every Monday (virtual) and there’s always chat at the start about weekends etc. One of my colleagues said he’s worrying because his holiday plans for the year include already booked trips to Cyprus and Dubai. Another colleague then said ‘any chance you can book a trip to France next’ and he got a few laughs.

I have family in France, as does another colleague I’m aware of. Is it me or is this type of ‘joke’ really inappropriate given the current climate?

'Came across your desk?' The innudendo in this post is disgusting and clearly intentional. I feel triggered and I have reported you to mumsnet.

At least we know the poster isn’t treating it with the upmost impotence at it came across the desk

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 02/03/2026 21:13

Not a single fibre of offence in that joke. YABVU @LaurenkI

Are you purposely trying to get this person into trouble, by passing it to someone senior to deal with it?

And you have already flagged up something you classed as innappropriate, and that other person was 'dealt with?' Good grief ... Words fail me. Hmm You seem gull of glee about this person being dealt with, and also full of excitement and glee at the thought of this other pseron getting a warning!

And what on earth is the DFrench?

Like other posters, I am cringing for you. 😬

Not to mention doing unspeakable things with sheep.
I’m Welsh and the times I’ve heard these being said.

I spent five years living in London and one funny guy I worked with used to tell me his blood was bluer than mine.

Yes indeed - it just gets boring doesn't it?

My rebuttal to the sheep thing used to be that as a female who likes males, it was very nonsensical - if you're going to make that joke to/about me, then you need to make the sheep a ram...

I also had very similar in terms of blue blood and so I started saying: "You know it took the Romans five years to invade England and thirty to invade Wales right? Where do you think lots of English people ran to after England was conquered - maybe to the West?! I am probably more English than you!"

He didn't seem to think it was very funny somehow... made me laugh though!

Not in my experience, I’ve always found the Dfrench to be extremely hospitable on my numerous visits over the years.

They’d not sink to such depths.

They’re doing it behind your back then!!!

Oh my god… get a life!

Getareallife · 02/03/2026 21:19

I am so tired of dreary moaners desperate to be offended. Either grow a pair and say something at the time or stop whining.

That’s for them to decide, they’ll need to acknowledge my grievance though and I expect seek guidance from HR on any next steps.

I flagged an equally inappropriate ‘joke’ by another colleague a couple of years ago and I know they were warned as to their future conduct.

Ah so you’re down on HR files as a trouble maker intent on causing disruption and ill feeling amongst co-workers

Now I know for certain you're either winding everyone up, or just a bit dim.

Paul2023 · 02/03/2026 21:23

Just proves you can’t say anything in the work place without someone taking offence! It wasn’t even offensive!

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 02/03/2026 21:23

Jesus. This is why everyone scared to say anything now. Everyone is offended by something! Do you really think you’re entitled to live in a world where no one ever says anything to offend you? 🥱

Browharhar · 02/03/2026 21:27

I love frazzling the brains of the proud British guys who boast about being Anglo-Saxon by saying, "oh, half French? You're the ones King Arthur and the Britons fought against aren't you! He'd be gutted you won". Agree with PP that Wales is the most British of us all!

And, truthfully, I am offended by the OPs post - no joke intended. I am so completely and utterly sick of this whiny entitled bollocks. The wordcrime police never seem to understand that they, too, are offensive to others.

But I accept that I don't have a right to go through life without being offended, unlike the OP, so wouldn't try to have her reprimanded for being offensive - irl I'd just avoid her like the plague she is.

LittleMyLabyrinth · 02/03/2026 21:30

Not worth making a big deal out of, but I would definitely judge someone making a joke in such bad taste. It was an unpleasant thing to say.

We are hospitable and also have a different sense of humour - we would probably say worse. Two things can be right at the same time, no? We also support employees rights and fight ferociously for them but you are being silly here!!! Relax

This is how I read it.

I read it that way too.

Anyway, IME, French people love joking about us too. I lived in France for a year during my French degree, and there were plenty of jokes about ‘les roast beef’ (that’s what they call us). 🤣

I'm judging you for this unpleasant comment. We all have a right to judge and we all do it. The OP is a sly trouble maker, and you are encouraging her massive sense of entitlement and creepy attempts to harm those around her for no good reason at all.

Jesus the absolute abuse I received to my face from french people when I lived there went well beyond what your colleagues said.

Generally they hate us and we hate them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Interestingly, it likely much of the stories of King Arthur (you go understand he wasn’t real in the way the stories portray) was actually developed by French poets based on some Celtic base myth - but I digress

I do think some have lost sight of what a professional workplace looks like in this day and age.

I am glad retirement is on the horizon.

The responses here evidence exactly why it was an inappropriate remark - heck, I hadn’t even considered the possible link to boats given the rise of the likes of Farage and the far right in this country.

I should think your colleagues and manager share your joy about your pending retirement…
