To think colleagues joke was NOT acceptable?

LaurenkI · 02/03/2026 18:10

My team has a meeting every Monday (virtual) and there’s always chat at the start about weekends etc. One of my colleagues said he’s worrying because his holiday plans for the year include already booked trips to Cyprus and Dubai. Another colleague then said ‘any chance you can book a trip to France next’ and he got a few laughs.

I have family in France, as does another colleague I’m aware of. Is it me or is this type of ‘joke’ really inappropriate given the current climate?

Jesus H Christ. Do you have to be such a snowflake?

Trippo · 02/03/2026 20:08

Well. I highly doubt that your colleague deliberately meant he hopes your family personally is harmed but you can force it to be about that if you like I suppose.

You can choose to be offended or you can choose to be happy, it's really up to you.

G5000 · 02/03/2026 20:09

I had a colleague who went complaining to our manager because people had discussed their dogs, and her dog died. So her feelings were hurt as people were so insensitive.

I don't particularly find the whole English v French thing funny, it was dated in the 1950s, but I don't think he actually wants Iran to bomb France. It's just a stupid type of joke from someone with a very old fashioned sense of humour.

BotterMon · 02/03/2026 20:09

You've raised a grievance and want HR involvement? Guess nobody's very busy with real world problems where you work? Crikey talk about an overreaction, Hope your pearls aren't too squished by being clutched so tightly!

I do think some have lost sight of what a professional workplace looks like in this day and age.

I am glad retirement is on the horizon.

The responses here evidence exactly why it was an inappropriate remark - heck, I hadn’t even considered the possible link to boats given the rise of the likes of Farage and the far right in this country.

You are getting more unreasonable and irrational with every post.

I can't imagine what your manager and colleagues must think of you. I feel sorry for them having to put up with your ridiculous hurt feelings and outrage.

Christ on a bike Im glad I'm no longer in the work place!!

Duvetdayneeded · 02/03/2026 20:11

Get a grip op.

UncannyFanny · 02/03/2026 20:12

I almost wonder if some people just go around looking for something to be offended by. You sound like someone that you can really let your hair down around OP. Parties must be fun.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 02/03/2026 20:12

Having read OPs latest update, I'm wondering if this is a wind up.

IceOnTheLake · 02/03/2026 20:14

Honestly, you're being ridiculous. Your poor manager having to deal with this, what a waste of time.

And I live in France

FastFood · 02/03/2026 20:15

I'm French and I find it funny.
You guys should hear our jokes about the Brits. Its just the age-old rivalry, we love each other ♥️

ERthree · 02/03/2026 20:15

how bloody pathetic, i think you need to get a back bone and grow up.

HisNibs · 02/03/2026 20:16

I'm sure your colleagues will miss you when you retire then OP 🙄

I think it depends how you interpret it. I’d hear that as ‘book somewhere nearer and safer next time and you’ll have a better chance of getting there!’. So I wouldn’t hear it as insensitive or inappropriate. It’s just banter about holidays being cancelled or not.

This is how I read it.

So now lucky you, you have something else to go in with.

Can I tell you something else that has changed in the work place? I am in my 50's so i suspect in your age range, so have worked since 1988 and seen all the changes.

Before Zoom/Teams etc this sort of comment would be made by one colleague to another and that would have been that. But now that sort of low level banter is lost because everyone is so worried about the office busybody (thats you btw) getting snotty and policing everyone.

I also refuse to believe that at the age you are, the centuries old ribbing of the french by the english and vice versa has passed you by. I very much doubt it was about the boats, more likely about the old rivalry or the rugby because the French have a very good squad right now and are likely to do very well. But you knew that. You are that colleague, and I would very much suspect "that" neighbour etc.

Reliablesource · 02/03/2026 20:18

Bloody Nora. You have emailed your manager about this absolute non-event? And admit that you have previously raised a grievance about a similar joke in the past? It’s YOU who will have your card marked by management and HR as a drama queen troublemaker. I bet your colleagues cannot wait for you to retire, you sound unbearable.

Bloody hell OP. It's called dark humour and if you don't get that please stay away from all the emergency services and hospitals 😬

HauntedBungalow · 02/03/2026 20:24

Depends who your colleague is. If he's JD Vance it's a worry. If it's Wayne from Auditing I wouldn't be bothered.

Dunno, there’s one of these losers on every office. Ours thankfully finally left, everyone had pretty much stopped talking to her about anything at all, in case she took offence. A lonely life.

I remember those days fondly. My husband serves in the Army too so it's a riot in our house. I'm sure OP would be clutching her pearls constantly.

Crazycatladywithnocats · 02/03/2026 20:27

Sorry to pour cold water on the very sensible comments about no offence meant but ime, some managers take the side of the “offended one”. It’s as if the affronted person is in the right. The manager has to be seen to be taking it seriously. I know, it’s pandering lip service.

StarDolphins · 02/03/2026 20:27

I’ve just changed this joke from France to where I’m from and it didn’t bother me whatsoever. It just wouldn’t register with me at all. I do think people are generally a lot more offended about absolutely nothing stuff these days. Which is a shame because nobody even jokes anymore.
