What on earth is this illness I’ve got?

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:00

Yesterday morning started with feeling sick and stomach pains, headache and chills. By the evening I was passing watery diarrhoea regularly.
I hardly slept last night as I had to keep getting up for the toilet to pass more

This morning I’m extremely achy - my lower back, my legs etc. and got chills again. Took my temperature. It’s between 36.7 and 37.
Very tired but can’t rest as I feel so unwell

I haven’t been sick at all.
It hasn’t really followed the pattern of other stomach bugs including norovirus that I’ve had in the past.
Usually the aches etc will be easing off by now (24 hours after symptoms began).

A stomach bug. I often get them without the vomiting part, even if I feel very nauseous.

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:05

Is it usual to still feel very achy and feverish on day two?

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 01/03/2026 07:07

I have something very similar at the moment caught from DH who had it last week, we presumed it's the latest norovirus to be doing the rounds!

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:08

I always thought norovirus = projectile vomiting and over pretty swiftly.

Do you suffer with health anxiety?

Octavia64 · 01/03/2026 07:11

You have been very lucky in the past if your stomach bugs have been eased after 24 hours.

Eenameenadeeka · 01/03/2026 07:12

Just sounds like a stomach bug. Seems to be going around at the moment unfortunately

VerityBlueSky · 01/03/2026 07:14

You dont have a fever. If take painkillers. Make sure you're drinking water to get hydrated again. You've been awake a long time so are going to be achy and tired and not feeling good. Watch something, read something, do puzzles. Take your mind off it and you'll get to sleep.
Don't do anything else today except rest.

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:22

@VerityBlueSky The body aches are just horrible today.

rehydration sachets? Or flat 7 up? Can you drink that? Or even yougurt to replace the good bacteria? Take paracetamol and if you can’t keep fluids down, Not peeing, or strong tea coloured pee, even if you are infectious, you ll need to go to A&E for an IV drip. Try and drink a large cup of fluid, with sugar, every hour.. take care..

Do you suffer with health anxiety?

Why do you ask that? The OP’s question doesn’t suggest health anxiety.

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:38

I am peejng but it’s a lot darker than usual. Is that a concern?
I’m currently drinking a hydration drink that my DP made me and had some paracetamol.

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:38

The pee is a dark yellow

Just had it. Started on Wednesday. Didn’t get any sickness or diarrhoea until this morning. Just extremely tired, low temp, bad stomach cramps. Normally with stomach bugs you get the release from sickness or diarrhoea this bug felt like the virus was staying put.

Heyhelga · 01/03/2026 07:43

Dark pee is usually just a sign of lack of hydration. Keep drinking lots of water. Like pint glasses of water. It'll also help flush out the bugs from your stomach. Otherwise stay bed ridden and get lots of rest.

MrsToothyBitch · 01/03/2026 07:43

DH and I have both had this this month, it's a stomach bug I think. Similar to you OP, we both felt very mildly ill vs what we'd expect for a stomach bug, but we both had it for longer than usual. We've both felt mildly unwell for a week with similar symptoms to you each day and the chills & pain aspect has been the defining / memorable symptom.

For contrast, we had another bug around this time last year and we were both actively ill for around 24-36 hrs between us then spent a couple of wiped out but symptom-free days recovering / waiting out the exclusion time. As you'd expect.

I especially appreciated the hip, leg and stomach cramps starting right at the end of my always cramp-filled period with this one. An extra week in pain. The hip pains were extremely tenacious.

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:44

@Emsie1987 that’s exactly it. When do you start feeling better can I ask? I mean how many days of it am I expecting.

Wierd! I've had the worst stomach (bowel) cramps ever in my life...tues/wed...improved by Friday and pretty much back to normal now. No vomiting. Tired, aching joints. I wondered what the hell was wrong with me! Seems its just a bug doing its rounds...

I always thought norovirus = projectile vomiting and over pretty swiftly.

I think people just incorrectly assume that anytime they have severe vomiting it’s noro, and if they don’t, it’s not. But I don’t think that is accurate.

I have pretty bad emetophobia so have looked into this! And I read a study where they infected people deliberately with noro, and of the people who developed symptoms, a third didn’t actually vomit.

Either way, it doesn’t really matter what specific virus you have. It only started yesterday morning so while unpleasant, there’s no reason to think it’s anything serious.

Hope you feel better soon!

Paisleyandburgandy · 01/03/2026 07:47

Thanks, yes it’s the aches that are awful (lower back is my weak point anyway) and the lack of sleep. I was too scared to drift off in case I soiled the bed.

OP posts:
Foodylicious · 01/03/2026 07:47

If you can drink plenty and eat today, you will be feeling better soon.
Watch a bit if TV or read, eat if you can, then go back to bed for a sleep/nap.

Your symptoms sound unpleasant, but not worrying.

Yep, normal stomach bug is like 25 hour sickness and/or diarrhea then you can more or less function.

Norovirus is what Americans call stomach flu, it feels like flu in that you get a fever, chills, body aches, for me I vomited solidly for around 6 hours, 2 days of diarrhea but about a week of feeling like is been hot by a bus.

Trevordidit · 01/03/2026 07:10

Do you suffer with health anxiety?

Said with the nauseating MN head tilt. Literally nothing in the OP suggests this - I’m sore that’s not the cause of aches and watery diarrhea 🙄

Emsie1987 · 01/03/2026 09:13

Erm I don’t feel back to normal yet. The diarrhea only started today (5 days after first feeling ill). Feel less tired and fatigue though. So hopefully over the next day or two I will feel a lot better. Struggling with two little kids and got so much to do so I hope so.

CoastalCalm · 01/03/2026 09:18

Please don’t drink pints of plain water per suggestion above that will just flush more electrolytes and worsen dehydration - focus on electrolyte intake steadily , diahoralite made double strength and sipped regularly. The aches may be linked to worsening dehydration - I have severely reduced kidney function from dehydration so if concerned and it’s worsening (confusion , muscle cramps , headache) please seek treatment
