John Davidson shouting the N word during the BAFTAS

1000 replies

Crawse · 23/02/2026 10:02

John Davidson has Tourettes and is a campaigner for the condition. Whist Michale B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting he shouted out the racial slur. It’s extremely uncomfortable to watch. I feel terrible for the two presenters. I’m really conflicted on this one.

What are your thoughts?

No one should be subjected to abuse. That is my bottom line. Maybe the fact I was called P*** (I’m half Indian) growing up has influenced my views. I obviously recognise Tourette’s is involuntary.

British acting awards interrupted by racist slur from man with Tourette Syndrome | CNN

At Sunday night’s BAFTA ceremony in London, a man yelled a racist slur as two of the world’s most celebrated Black actors, Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, presented an award on stage.

Oh ok. White people were enslaved too. So swearing at the obscenely wealthy Queen is the same as using the N word to black men. Makes sense.

She didn't take offence or play the victim card, so they musn't.

Edited

I would suggest no-one takes offense at a Tourette's tic, in fact.

SpaceRaccoon · 23/02/2026 17:28

So everyone else is "bleating" and "braying", but you're... what?

If it wasn't intentional and you all get that, marvelous. We can all move on.

Crack on with moving on, no one is stopping you.

Aren’t some black men obscenely wealthy? What’s that got to do with anything?

You should tell Kemi B that. Another one playing the victim card.

White people are currently STILL enslaved by the way.

I don't need to, I already know there was no deliberate intent.

Nomas, you have issues relating to race it seems. Plus some victim mentality.

Yes, I have issues with the way many MNers talk about race here.

If you see it as victim mentality, it’s probably because the ratio of white to BAME on this thread is massively to your advantage.

Which ones? Do you mean like underpaid Amazon delivery workers?

Tbf, black people make up less than 4% of the UK population so that's always going to be the case.

Or the ratio of empathy towards people with tourettes is not to your advantage. You're stirring.

JonesTown · 23/02/2026 17:35

BippityBopper · 23/02/2026 17:23

Exactly. People are falling over themselves feeling sorry for John. No ounce of sympathy for the people in the spotlight having racial slurs thrown at them.

Two things can be correct at the same time - John couldn't help it and the people on stage suffered humiliation.

You only have to read comments on online news about it, and it's emboldened the racists even further to add salt to the wound.

That’s not what I’ve seen. There are plenty on the far left (Narinder Kaur etc) attacking John, with many claiming he is a racist.

I do too. That's why Black MNers never come on here but stay in their corner. Aa do many brown MNers
I am going to stay here though.

nomas · 23/02/2026 17:27

Agreed.

Yep, and the disingenuous bleating of ‘But it wasn’t INTENTIONAL’.

We know it wasn’t. You don’t need to bray it.

Yep, and the disingenuous bleating of ‘But it wasn’t INTENTIONAL’.

How is educating people about a neurodevelopmental disorder 'bleating'?

You really are showing yourself as being quite hateful.

One of the reasons why people with this disorder need others to advocate for them.

Or as you would put it, 'bleat' for them.

LeopardSnow · 23/02/2026 17:36

nomas · 23/02/2026 17:16

I don’t know the band, but black people can say the word, you can’t. Get over it.

You are right @nomas black people have a long and terrible history of abuse and discrimination and having that word used against them echoes that long legacy of pain. And that is why they can reclaim it and say it and white people cannot. And that is true for almost every other circumstance, except in this one where this one man who is also vulnerable is medically incapable of knowing what he will say to who when.

Disabled people also have a long history of being excluded and hidden and abused and shamed. And that is why they can decide whether they turn up to events where they have been invited to be recognised and celebrated, without having to step out or hide themselves or make themselves small or invisible or absent when the unintentional, inescapable, unpredictable, painful symptoms of their disabilities do manifest. Able people can’t make that decision for them and tell them to hide and be ashamed. Get over it.

Both things are true

CharlotteRumpling · 23/02/2026 17:37

SpaceRaccoon · 23/02/2026 17:35

She commented on the BBCs editing though - she didn't suggest that disabled people be segregated.

Neither have I said they should be segregated. But if the N word is just like shouting " cunt", why do you think she needed to comment? After all, white people were enslaved too.

As this is a UK based site and black people make up about 4% of the total population of the UK then it's going to be that way, isn't it?
I would also suggest most people on here are female, because that's the nature of the site.

This is a pretty weird comment @clickthat. enslavement of black people isn’t something I’d be aiming to diminish or find white comparators to if I were you.
