To ask for a World Book Day character

School has given a theme (I don’t remember there being themes in my school days!) of “masquerade ball, party clothes, gowns, cloaks and crowns”. What the hell am I supposed to do with this? It’s not clear whether they want a book character or just a generic “royal” costume.

What age is your child?

frozendaisy · 19/02/2026 13:20

You pick a character from a book your child has read with something of those items included in their character. Cloaks covers Harry Potter.

TheGirlattheBack · 19/02/2026 13:20

What dressing up does your child already have? Cloaks and crowns gives free pass for superhero/princess type costumes that most children have at home.

ILikeDungs · 19/02/2026 13:23

A girl? Paper Bag Princess. Send her in a paper bag and a crown.

Needmorelego · 19/02/2026 13:23

Seriously !
For primary age children.
I would be going to the head teacher and saying (in more polite words) "fuck off the theme is BOOKS".
Masquerade Balls are for adults.

Mine has to dress as an adjective, I'm sure the school thought they were being helpful.

Our school is doing the same this year, I'm enjoying the change!!

ILikeDungs · 19/02/2026 13:26

If it is your DS Prince Ronald has a crown too, but he is a bit of a doofus.

TroubleHubbleBubble · 19/02/2026 13:26

I don’t know why they just don’t re-name it World Kids Fancy Dress at School Day. When you’ve waded through all the Minecraft and Batmen and bloody Spidermen, how many kids actually go as a character from a book?

The whole thing needs a re-think - is it really encouraging reading, or just a daft dress up day?

I think the waters get a bit muddied because most online games and TV shows/movies now have books.

The dressing up can be fun but schools don't need to come up with "themes"....the theme is BOOKS.
Batman and Spiderman are fine as they started life in comic books. There are also loads of Minecraft books so I wouldn't have an issue with that.
But what books for PRIMARY children have a masquerade ball? Seriously 🤷

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 19/02/2026 13:31

I think The Highway Rat is a good shout.

canuckup · 19/02/2026 14:11

James Herriot

Sirzy · 19/02/2026 14:14

The witch from room on a broom has a cloak?

"Red" is an adjective. (Or whatever other colour your kid's favourite top/dress is)

HeadyLamarr · 19/02/2026 14:18

Come to think of it, DD could have gone in any of her normal clothes and say her adjective is talkative.

Because she's extremely good at being that

blublub · 19/02/2026 14:19

Our school is doing fairytales as a theme. My daughter wants to go as Matilda (you know a character from a book, being world book day and all). She’s dressing up and going as Matilda. I think they just come up with these re-invention’s to keep themselves in a job sometimes.

redboxerclub · 19/02/2026 14:22

To be fair - I think it makes it easier as you will most likely have something that will fit the bill rather than then buying a book specific costume. Just send he in a princess dress and crown

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 19/02/2026 14:24

If you have a girl, you could do Princess Pearl.
