To ask for a World Book Day character

School has given a theme (I don’t remember there being themes in my school days!) of “masquerade ball, party clothes, gowns, cloaks and crowns”. What the hell am I supposed to do with this? It’s not clear whether they want a book character or just a generic “royal” costume.

I don’t know why they just don’t re-name it World Kids Fancy Dress at School Day. When you’ve waded through all the Minecraft and Batmen and bloody Spidermen, how many kids actually go as a character from a book?

The whole thing needs a re-think - is it really encouraging reading, or just a daft dress up day?

Edited

I don’t know. Last year my son went in his Haaland Man City kit. This is because the Ultimate football heroes books were the first books that got him reading. Not strictly a book character but in the spirit in my opinion. He’s going as Horrid Henry this year.

Just send them as a guest at the ball Cinderella went to and say they're Prince/Princess whatever you like in their party clothes/cloaks

Tk maxx are fabulous for world book day outfits, all year kind they sell unbelievable costumes, very detailed and accessories.

YessicaHaircut · 20/02/2026 18:39

DS (current Y1) went dressed as a knight last year and said he was Sir Percy Pilkington from Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book. I think that would fit your theme and DS loved wearing the costume, all came from the charity shop including plastic sword and shield etc.

StripyHorse · 20/02/2026 18:55

Princess Smartypants? Dungarees, wellies and a crown.

pouletvous · 20/02/2026 22:52

girl or boy? !!!!!!

Find it irritating when they set themes. One year my older DC had to dress as an adjective which was.. just what the fuck really. Another year it was the career they wanted as adults. Another was Shakespeare with every class allotted a play, I didn’t mind that one quite as much because DD had a witch costume already from Halloween.

For this, either get a king/Queen costume or just simply a cloak and crown. If you’re crafty, you could easily make them.

TheBirdintheCave · 21/02/2026 08:09

Oh I’d be ignoring that. My son only goes as characters who wear normal clothes (that I buy from Vinted). This year he’s going to be TinTin 😅

Our school is doing fairytales as a theme. My daughter wants to go as Matilda (you know a character from a book, being world book day and all). She’s dressing up and going as Matilda. I think they just come up with these re-invention’s to keep themselves in a job sometimes.

it actually to stop kids coming in superhero costumes and football kit and pretending they're book characters

Thesnailonthewhale · 21/02/2026 08:21

Paper bag princess is a great story 😃

Ponoka7 · 21/02/2026 08:30

Adjective is easy, clean, happy, sad, hungry. Or a colour.
@VillyFuff2022 a lot of parents don't appreciate having to buy a, once wear, outfit. Not even a £10 one from Asda, let alone £15+ from TKMaxx.
My youngest GD was gutted that she was ill on career day, she wanted to dress up as her, much loved, teacher. So she's being Miss Honey on WBD.

I think they have made it genetic so you folding have to buy a costume.

Mine has to dress as an adjective, I'm sure the school thought they were being helpful.

When mine did this I decorated a bow with arm holes and head hole; covered it in foil for ‘shiny’
And put bright clothes and make up with bright bows in my daughters hair for ‘colourful’
my son had to sit in a chair for carpet time as he couldn’t move his arms but he loved his box 🤣🤣

RoxytheRexy · 21/02/2026 08:45

We had a theme for WBD last year. It was Nature. My DD went as Hermione as she normally does. Hogwarts is in the countryside

Most superheroes have their roots in comic books - which are books - so why shouldn't superhero costumes be ok?
It's also called World BOOK Day not World Fictional Characters Day.
If a child's favourite book is "101 things about Man Utd football team" why shouldn't they come dressed in the kit?

BOOKS.
The theme is fricking BOOKS.
Ooooh this annoys me so much.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 21/02/2026 08:55

Thankfully, at my son’s primary school, they only the dressing up bit of WBD every couple of years.

FreyasCats · 21/02/2026 09:02

Quick and easy home made solution - cardboard crown covered in tin foil and cardboard mask makes a simple Cinderella/guest at the ball outfit.

blublub · 21/02/2026 09:28

@Thesnailonthewhale but there are plenty of book characters who are footballers and superheroes. Batman, Spider-Man etc. are all from books. It smacks of control to me. Why not rename the day if it’s not going to be about book characters? It’s taking away from the theme of the day, which rightly should be books. They could read books about footballers and superheroes to the kids to tie in and steer their learning. Instead of high jacking the narrative and making it even more difficult for parents. Or turning kids away from books, which it’s doing to my daughter.

They should just get rid of the dressing up element...and just bring it back to the books.

Bring a book in and share it with the class. Much easier and actually about book...

One year we had a theme of cats and dogs - they had a children's author visiting the school, and the books they wrote had a cat and a dog as the main characters. They did an art session drawing cats and dogs too.

Another year they had to pick a Roald Dahl chatacter, which gives lots of scope.

Can't remember the others, but some they didn't dress up due to covid.
