Unfriending right wing friends

nondrinker1985 · 16/02/2026 16:53

One of my school mum friends of around 10 years has started sharing loads of Restore Britain/Rupert Lowe posts.

I’m actually really shocked as she’s an Irish immigrant herself.

I’ve unfriended her which is a shame as day to day she’s ok. Also another mum who has been liking and commenting on the Restore Britain posts, they’ll probably tell me they’re not racist but I can’t be arsed calling them out.

Are you suggesting it’s not ok to poke fun at OP making a public announcement that she’s going to block her family member for sharing a social media post she dislikes? Rather than, you know, having a conversation with him?

I don’t think poking fun at people is particularly constructive or mature, regardless of where they stand politically. And it’s usually pointless having conversations with people with the aim of changing their political views.

Yes, that's right, because a single poster on a forum thread is representative of an entire voting demographic. FFS grow up.

yet the irony of your statement. You’ve been one of the most triggered commentators on this thread 🤣

It’s not about where anyone stands politically, it’s about adults (presumably) showing adult behaviour. Poking fun is a universal way (for most) to draw attention to undesirable behaviour so I think it’s fair enough.

Maybe a bit of levity and people having a laugh is not popular with those on the left?

I can't believe that poster has talked about poking fun at one's beliefs from adults. There's a thread about Reform every day and it is ALWAYS is led by ridicule. In fact, it's quite suspicious why the inordinate amount of threads are started because they repeat the same hyperbole. I wonder what really is their purpose.

If that's the case, how do you explain the mean girl pile ons towards anybody who says they support Tories or Reform, on Mumsnet? I can assure you, those pile ons are full of ridicule and childish insults.

Personally I'd reframe that as: mocking and jeering is juvenile and unhelpful regardless of one's political standing.

Unless you're one of those people who thinks it's fine to mock and jeer at others? I mean, y'know, there are other names for those people that have nothing to do with politics. Just saying. Do you like it when people mock and jeer at you?

It's not constructive or mature there either.

I have had to ditch a friend of 20+ years as he has gone right wing. Sits at home all day watching GB news and scrolling tik tok. He was a lovely person once upon a time.

Bigoted

‘having strong, unreasonable beliefs and disliking other people who have different beliefs or a different way of life:

She's so bigoted that she refuses to accept anyone who doesn't think like her.’

I’m not sure why you have escalated it to ‘mocking and jeering’. It was a few laugh emojis on a post where OP said something rather juvenile.

There’s quite a big difference between a few laugh emojis and the cascades of nasty vilification and unbelievable name calling we see from the ‘liberal’ left on posts that are remotely pro Tory or Reform (or even neutral in some cases) as Miggledy points out, but I do agree that it is not helpful.

The whole premise of this thread is utterly ridiculous anyway and deserves to be mocked.

Left wing people deciding not to speak to right leaning people. Seemingly due to something their lefty, prejudiced and warped minds have dreamt up and that they assume all right leaning person simply must think. (All of them. Massive racists and religious bigots who want to have a cull of trans people and abolish the disabled).

Just because they tick one box on the ballot paper rather than another.

It really is quite ridiculous. Mildly amusing but fundamentally ridiculous. So I wouldnt have a sense of humour failure when people take the piss out of this peculiar leftwing approach? Eventually you too will see how silly things have become!

By the same token, one could say that righties are ridiculous to take such massive offence just because people they don't like don't want to talk to them.😆

In real life, there's no rule obliging anyone to communicate with anyone else, more than is strictly necessary for practical or legal purposes.

Luckily, there's no rule obliging everyone to vote for one party and buy into one political ideology. By the way the left go on you'd think anything right of centre is a cult that's out to destroy civilisation. When it fact, it's the left who's responsible for division, making the right respond to that - as is their right. Freedom of speech works both ways. Political activisism or most kind of activism is instigated by the left because they thrive on crusades and bully boy tactics. Antifa is one of the most disgusting hatefully vile organisations. A bunch of fascists who are meant to oppose the very thing they stand for. Then you've got the charming Free Palestine activists knocking on people's doors telling them to boycott Israeli products. The racist twat who harassed Matt Lucas just for being Jewish. If that's in the name of the left, I'm fucking delighted not to have them as friends.

People do go on about it on mn. ‘Unfriending people’ usually people on the left creating threads about how they must do this.

If someone can only know someone who votes as they do I wonder why, but up to them.

I dont think right wing people do take "such massive offence" though? I certainly havent. I think most people just think lefties are a bit chippy and weird? (Although rather divisive these days). Right wing people are generally more chilled about people with opposing views; there was some polling done a few years ago to that effect. I mean...ive never seen a right wing person with a tshirt saying "never kissed a lefty" on it for example.

YouAreEntitledToMyOpinion · 23/02/2026 08:23

One of my best friends is left wing and I would never unfriend her because of her views and she's the same with me. We often roll our eyes at each other's views, but occasionally have agreed on certain subjects. But it his her view. Same as mine is mine. I can live with that!

Another friend of mine is voting Green. Not my cup of tea at all, but it's his choice.

I always get visions of Millie Tant behind the keyboard (anyone remember Viz) when I see posts from people who are so inflexible.

Notice also that every time the right does protest, which is nowhere near the same times as the left, there is ALWAYS a counter protest.

The trouble is that people on the left then exist in an echo chamber and if the country decides to vote for a party right of centre they get frightened and start shouting “Nazi”. It’s exhausting for everyone and entirely of the left’s own making because they refused to enter into conversation in a liberal democracy.

🤣Just taking the piss out of the ridiculous hyperbole of the left. You guys are so literal!

I also don't think the right would be able to "abolish the disabled" either. Although you would assume the way the left talk they think the right might have a cracked at that too.

How ironic. So the left can assert their autonomy? Shame they can't afford others the same right. The point of this ridiculous thread.
