Unfriending right wing friends

One of my school mum friends of around 10 years has started sharing loads of Restore Britain/Rupert Lowe posts.

I’m actually really shocked as she’s an Irish immigrant herself.

I’ve unfriended her which is a shame as day to day she’s ok. Also another mum who has been liking and commenting on the Restore Britain posts, they’ll probably tell me they’re not racist but I can’t be arsed calling them out.

Though this is slightly derailing the thread: PIP is NOT an out-of-work benefit, and many people who claim it DO work.

Ok. I know these people do not work.

Ok. I don't tend to go into to those threads but I imagine there are many people like myself who know those who claim disability benefits who are perfectly capable of working and resent their brand new cars. This does serious harm to those who genuinely do need support.

It does, I agree. But tbh so do the casual assumptions that get made on those threads about people's ability or otherwise to work. People tend to forget that not all disabilities are visible.

(Edited to add: I too am aware some people claiming PIP are working. My comments focus on those who can't because they are they ones who tend to cop the most flak.)

You are sounding more and more 6th former TBF. Apologies to any normal, sensible 6th formers on here.

Have you considered that behind there is a valid looking that they are trying to make?

Maybe stop listening to the blatant lies and misrepresentations (like the ones we’ve seen in this thread), read up first yourself and form your own opinion?

Or use your words and have a conversation with cousins dh and ask for his pov? You might not like it but you also might just discover that loads of centre/slightly left normal people haven’t suddenly become raging fascists overnight and have genuine concerns? Just a thought.

amber763 · 21/02/2026 18:16

One of my neighbours is right wing. I only know this because of a few things she's posted on Facebook. I don't care. We don't discuss politics. She's super kind. Left me a pot of bulbs from her garden because she noticed I'd been crying one day I passed her. Bought my dog a blanket and a toy for his birthday.

I find it so weird people would end friendships and relationships with family over their politics.

Why don't you try having an actual conversation, instead of cutting people off op?
My dh and I are political opposites (I'm right, he's left). We rub along just fine. Our dc (yes we managed to produce children despite voting differently) are different again. Try being more tolerant.

At least Rupert Lowe is trying to help the grooming gang victims.

Why would you not ask her about her views, either to find out if you should change your mind or persuade her that she should change hers?

Fragility? I’d call it highlighting the bigoted nature of many on ‘the left’..

Bigoted

‘having strong, unreasonable beliefs and disliking other people who have different beliefs or a different way of life:
She's so bigoted that she refuses to accept anyone who doesn't think like her.’

Absolutely but she's given us some entertainment with her thread. I would like to say all the frothing lefty mumsnetters who flocked to this thread would be rethinking but I doubt it. Seems some are so easily played x

Yes, that's right, because a single poster on a forum thread is representative of an entire voting demographic. FFS grow up.

Why are you telling me to grow up because I think differently to you. That's just more intolerance at play. The very crux of this thread.

Missing the point yet again. 🥱 I was referring to the tone of your posts, not the content. All the sarcasm and oh-so-edgy crying-with-laughter emojis don’t exactly encourage people to take you seriously. If you’re fine with that, crack on, but your posts on this thread aren’t exactly showing right-wing thinking in the best light.

Good job only the opinions of those I respect, matters.you've just used an emoji yourself. It's not like lefties to have double standards of course. Like telling others to grow up when you unfriend a anybody who doesn't conform to your beliefs. Now that IS childish.

Are you suggesting that OP’s attitude towards people with whom she disagrees is not typical of much of the left atm?

I guess you’ve missed the last 10 years of the ‘liberal’ left no platforming, cancelling and generally harassing people whose views they dislike? (Not suggesting that OP has harassed anyone on this thread). That the predominantly left leaning education sector especially universities have got so bad the government needed to bring in a new law to protect free speech? They got so bad that they not only no platformed the amazing Germaine Greer but some female staff had to employ extra security to move around the campus and raging mobs shut down debate events.

That’s great if you view yourself as left but don’t share OPs rather immature desire to block everyone she disagrees with, even family, but I don’t think it is accurate to claim OP is unusual in her views.

Are you suggesting it’s not ok to poke fun at OP making a public announcement that she’s going to block her family member for sharing a social media post she dislikes? Rather than, you know, having a conversation with him?
