Mumsnet bingo

Cactustuesday · 31/01/2026 22:31

Was in a restaurant tonight and heard a table of women laughing at Mumsnet, they were clearly a bit drunk and laughing talking about playing a game of Mumsnet bingo. We couldn't hear the full conversation but the top ones were - leave the bastard, didn't want to read and run, batshit, cheeky fucker.

Do people really read the site as some sort of joke? AIBU to wonder why you bother to read Mumsnet if you think so little of it?

Your house, your rules

YABU. I come here primarily for entertainment!

If someone starts a thread on, say, a destination wedding they can’t afford you just KNOW that someone will pipe up “It’s an invitation, not a summons”… usually within the first 5 posts!

Many people, whilst probably well-intentioned, tend to lack originality and jump to cliches to get their point across; particularly the already well worn cliches of the community they’re in at the time.

There are regularly threads on sites like Reddit and Tattle Life where people provide a running commentary on MN threads, with people trolling on here being egged on over there.

The women laughing in the restaurant are presumably MN regulars which is how they know what it’s like.

Tinsofbeans · 01/02/2026 08:42

I wouldn't take offence at them. My family take the piss out of me for being on here. "Oh where did you hear that from? Mumsnet?!" Chortle chortle.
Mumsnet has helped keep me sane at times. Plus it's kept me up to date with loads and also given me pointers as to where to go at times by reading other people's threads in a similar position.
I just don't mention it to other people in rl now.

Mumsnet is entertaining, that’s why a lot of people read it.

That doesn’t mean that there isn’t also a lot of great advice given, information shared and political activism.

It’s a huge website, people come for different things. Not everyone who reads it is a Mum. There are a lot of specialist subject boards.

The reason that the media dismisses it is because of misogyny. Can’t have anything woman centred or dear god “mother” centred be powerful. The only power women are meant to have is through beauty, let’s not start letting them thinking their ideas matter.

My friend who is a teacher sometimes uses it to illustrate debating styles or lack of. I remember I said this before and I was told I was lying! 😁

organisedadmin · 01/02/2026 08:50

Basically people are here for all sorts of reasons

TittyGajillions · 01/02/2026 08:51

I hope you gave them a hard stare!

Auroraloves · 01/02/2026 08:56

Another one that makes my eyes roll

“what did they say when you confronted them?”

or words to that effect

I think a lot of people on MN really do need to give their head a wobble.

And can I add a rare one, the old Korean lady in the back garden. If you know that one you’ve been here too long!

Edited

I bloody loved that thread. Made me smile in a warm way.

pimplebum · 01/02/2026 09:04

Stop eves dropping in a restaurant don’t you have basic manners !

see , it’s fun to read outrageous and conflicting opinions - I do love a good old fashioned pile on too

some of the funniest things I have ever read are on mn and I’ve learnt sooooooo much to
I’ve posted for support too which is super terrifying as it can be utterly brutal in a way it never is with real friends

I’ve read some of the saddest things on here to , the wide variety of discussion and the winding road those discussions will take is astounding love it !

pimplebum · 01/02/2026 09:05

The grammar police should have a field day with that 👆

Rumpledandcrumpled · 01/02/2026 09:09

You sound like you take the site very seriously and are very invested. I’d have laughed at this, jeez I do sitting on my sofa as so much is predictable. They were not laughing at your first born, just some of the mad responses.

Cactustuesday · 01/02/2026 13:57

TBH I got the impression they had a bit of a chip on their shoulder. I mean they weren't really Mumsnet types. The restaurant was tiny so we couldn't help listening to them. They were really throwing back the wine as well! They had two bottles.

Is this a poor attempt at comedy OP?

Some phrases just come up again and again. As well as those mentioned....

Not your circus, not your monkeys.
Keep your beak out
No is a full sentence

There are many more. I think some people think they're being original when they say them.

And another bloody thing. ‘No’ isn’t actually a full sentence. It does not contain a finite verb.

‘No is a full answer’ is just about acceptable.

Maybe Pedants’ Corner beckons to me …

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 01/02/2026 14:19

Surely we all laugh at some of the bonkers responses?
