To not get the visceral levels of hatred people have for Keir Starmer

LastChristmasigaveyousomesocks · 29/01/2026 19:58

I’m not suggesting he’s the greatest prime minister ever. I’m not even suggesting he’s good at all. But some people really, really passionately hate him.

He is a bit insipid and doesn’t have much charisma but overall he seems like a decent enough bloke who perhaps lacks the political skill and acumen he needs. He’s out of his depth basically.

But that’s not a reason to actually despise someone is it?

When did we get to a point where we can’t just disagree without painting the other person as the devil incarnate?

Exactly

What is your point?

Some more hard data. At the moment only Davey beats Starmer in "who would make the best PM". Your man Farage beats no-one, which is heartening.

What kind of crazies did they find to say that Ed Davey would be better than KS??? He is AWFUL. He thinks even more than 1% of women have a penis for a start.

My man?

Farage is living rent-free in your head, I see. He’s really got under your skin.

Whereas the other loon, Polanski, believes he can increase a cup size, just by using his mind.

Decisions, decisions…

Labour talk about them a lot, even in the upcoming by-election. I’m not sure it’s helping them.

Yes, it’s rather odd isn’t it?

If Farage is the man they claim he is, then why are Labour running scared? Mahmood has even been accused of being pseudo-Reform by the left wing.

Funny old game.

Well, according to polling it would be very odd if Labour didn't address the threat that is Reform.... who are ahead of the Tories, who seem a busted flush, i mean surely we are all due another defection from the Cons to Reform...

Perhaps some are worried that Reform is falling in the polls and Labours strategy has had some affect?

BIossomtoes · 31/01/2026 18:42

There won’t be many left soon, a couple more and the Tory parliamentary party will be in double figures.

‘Labours strategy has had some affect?’

What strategy is that? What effect has it had?

Oh no, you shouldn't have ]posted that... you'll be accused of answering the wrong question...

There are a few on here who not understand how asking the same question, in a different way, can get a very different answer.

I'm not going to answer that pointless question, as its all in the post you (selectively) quoted part off.

Talk about Reform a lot? If they want, it’s continuous airtime and Starmer’s rating keeps going down. Let’s see how it goes in Gorton & Denton.

In the nicest possible way I understand the history I’ve lived through. What part of my post is untrue?

She destroyed the industry the Victorians created and which made the country wealthy. Shipbuilding, steelworks, mining all gone and had no strategy for replacing them hence laying waste to huge areas of England and Wales. North Sea oil revenues were pouring in at that point and instead of investing in deindustrialised areas and creating new jobs she squandered the money on tax cuts. As if that wasn’t enough she privatised everything in sight and created our current housing crisis by selling off social housing. The mess we’re currently in is directly attributable to Thatcherism and no such thing as society.

UK shipbuilding was already in decline post WW2, owing in part to construction methods and unionisation, as well as changing markets (ie not UK buyers), and a lack of investment owing to distributions as opposed to reinvestment.

Steel is even easier - take China, it imports tremendous amounts of iron ore from Brazil and Australia (and elsewhere). The UK, and other European nations will never be able to compete (and this started in approximately 2003 - I remember, because I was trading iron ore at the time), after China joined the WTO in 2001. The UK steel industry would have failed with or without Thatcher.

As to North Sea hydrocarbons, do you know what the marginal rate of tax is on UK oil and gas production? It’s 78%. Then there are decline rates, and the shift to renewables etc. I am not sure how you can place the blame on Thatcher, but if you want to look at what Harbour Energy and Ithaca Energy have to say about Labour, please do.

Pinning the UK’s deindustrialisation on Thatcher is lazy, and wrong. During her tenure, there was the beginning of much broader issues in play, well beyond UK politics.

I suggest posters look up why Polanski changed his name. I don't particularly like him, but it is pretty disrespectful to taunt him on this. Though I am not surprised some posters do so, sadly.
