To think we shouldn’t have to contribute to soch if we don’t intend to use it?

For example, I don’t want a state pension - so I should surely be able to opt out of soch based contributions percentage. And just pay a lesser amount to cover anything I do take advantage of.

No I’d try some of my self tested ailments and alleviate symptoms

What if you were unconscious?

itsthetea · 28/01/2026 08:28

None nhs user would also have to use medics trained outside the UK or that’s cheating. Not consultants who mix private and nhs work

and never need emergency treatment as well as the intensive care treatment

Why would any of those things happen to the OP? Sounds very far-fetched.

the men who collect her bins and fix the roads she uses or serve her coffees or wait her tables in restaurants or police her streets… are 93% educated by state schools and kept healthy by NHS services. It’s called benefiting vicariously. Even if she is not a direct recipient, she still benefits from it.

LoftyPlumLion · 28/01/2026 08:35

So you are basically saying you are rich, don’t need the safety net that some need so want to pay in to the safety net less.

let me guess inherited wealth or landlord parasite? Well done you, no doubt you’ve got a sob story about being self made, you worked hard, if only the poor worked harder they too could achieve what you achieved, have I called that right Elon or is it Donald?

Atleast you have common sense. My mind is
blown by those who are parentifying themselves into unknowing babies on the thread so they can gasp at new words and pretend they’re surprised.

OP I don't think you get this.

We have no idea what SOCH is. We've googled it, and google doesn't know.

Seriously.. It's not in common usage and we have no idea !

IngridBurger · 28/01/2026 08:37

echt · 28/01/2026 08:19

They are all very common occurrences. Why wouldn't they happen?

Do tell. In your own time.

I guess I should have added a sarcasm note everyone, sorry!

I'm not convinced many people plan to have strokes, car accidents, heart attacks etc. Yet the data tells us they do anyway.

I know. I wasn't being serious... Will clarify in future!

Social Securtity contributions. Prior to 2001 this was their name, and therefore how I choose to word it, as I have done for the entirety of my life.

60, and never heard of this term, and I'm pretty switched on.

Needspaceforlego · 28/01/2026 08:42

itsthetea · 28/01/2026 08:14

You take advantage of living in a society where you don’t see bodies on the streets , begging rates are relatively low, children are educated to become doctors and nurses

out society is shaped by the social commitment we all make - to opt out you need to move out - leave the country

Can I add to that, we all pay for prisons, even if we never intend to use one?

Although it could be argued we all benefit from their existence

LOL sorry - OP’s posts are frying my brain!

Me too!

Mind you, I've just spotted the title is a discount for not intending to use services. Not not using them.

I have no intention of needing the fire service, police, NHS. I do not intend being seriously sick, injured, or a victim of crime.

Do I get a rebate? Please?

supersop60 · 28/01/2026 08:49

Dollymylove · 28/01/2026 08:21

Has anyone found out what soch means yet? I cant be arsed trawling through 100s of posts

I posted. I think it’s a shortening of ‘social’. A verbal thing.

cupofrealtea · 28/01/2026 08:50

You simply can’t opt out of the NHS in this country. It amazes me people think they can. Even in the cities there isn’t a good enough emergency response service. Private hospitals regularly hand over people who need intensive care. Sure opt out but you’re only a car accident or heart attack away from A+E.

Auroraloves · 28/01/2026 08:51

So not even a proper term. @slozenger I think you need apologise to people who you ridiculed because they didn’t get your slang

kerstina · 28/01/2026 08:52

YABU and selfish . Also you might not think you will need the states help in your life . I am all right jack but you might one day .

Crimblecrumblerules · 28/01/2026 08:40

60, and never heard of this term, and I'm pretty switched on.

Never heard it either.

I always thought that was the intent of National Insurance, to cover the 5 elements of the Welfare State; Social Security, Health care, Education, Housing, Employment.

supersop60 · 28/01/2026 08:49

That’s how I’ve interpreted it - like shortening Gary to Gaz. The OP’s superciliousness over the fact that the rest of us prefer to communicate in proper written English rather than informal text speak, doesn’t really lend her comments much intellectual robustness, does it? Trying to explain the values and the economic underpinnings of a social system predicated on everyone paying in, to someone who calls it ‘the soch’ is a waste of our time, I think.

Am going to go and do my ironing instead.

SurferRona · 28/01/2026 08:57

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:13

It’s self explanatory

It really isn’t. Do you need help with literacy?

ResusciAnnie · 28/01/2026 08:58

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:27

Stop being facetious. You all know full well what soch/sosh is.

Many people on here weren’t even born pre-2001. I was 11. So no, I didn’t know what ‘soch’ was before this thread, have never heard of it before, and google didn’t come up with much. So just as you can call people facetious, people may think of you as cantankerous/stuck in your ways/fuddy duddy.

Theonebutnotonly · 28/01/2026 08:58

slozenger · 27/01/2026 22:15

No but it would be a good idea to keep something like that on my ID

So if you’re in, say, a rail crash or a road accident, you’d like the rest of us to just leave you lying screaming in the wreckage? Right.

Griffindor1979 · 28/01/2026 08:59

Not to mention that ‘social’ if that’s what the OP meant, doesn’t pay for the NHS.

SurferRona · 28/01/2026 08:59

supersop60 · 28/01/2026 08:49

I posted. I think it’s a shortening of ‘social’. A verbal thing.

But then it is spelt incorrectly. Phonetically, “soch” is a nonsense. Maybe OP is 7 years old or something. 🤷‍♀️
