Why is the wine in a can?🤮

I’m going to the theatre tonight, I haven’t been out in the evening in over a year or had much time to myself so it’s a treat. I looked up the menu to see if they do small tubs of ice cream (they doGrin) and I saw that the wine they sell is in cans 🤮I could almost understand a cold can of white wine but WHO would enjoy a can of red wine? I totally understand not using glass, I get the issue with plastic (although reusable plastic cups might be an idea?) but even a paper cup would be better. Has anyone had one (particularly red) and how was it? I couldn’t drink red wine like a can of coke, is it cold??

I had a can of Malbec when I was in Argentina and it was lovely

Anywhere I've had it it is fine. You get a plastic cup, you don't swig it out of the can. Mostly Ive come across this where drinks are delivered to your seats or small venues that might only sell a few glases of wine.

Room temperature

runrunrun2026 · 27/01/2026 13:35

Surely they give you a cup with it?

rapunzelsreptile · 27/01/2026 13:36

@helpfulpersonthats reassuring that there’s a cup! I thought it’d be like a canned drink!

Why would it be cold?

HeadyLamarr · 27/01/2026 13:37

Because cans are more easily recycled than those little plastic bottles.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 27/01/2026 13:41

Ease of recycling and number of times aluminium can be recycled.

Lightweight and so cheaper to transport

Light-tight so preserves the wine, as not exposed to sunlight

Starlight1979 · 27/01/2026 13:42

I've had canned red wine at gigs and it's absolutely fine. They pour it into a plastic cup so you wouldn't even know the difference.

DappledThings · 27/01/2026 13:42

You can get a cup with any canned drink. I never drink anything out of a can. At the theatre they will automatically give you one anyway.

TheNightingalesStarling · 27/01/2026 13:43

Its justva convenient portion size.

Strawberryfruitcorner · 27/01/2026 13:45

Have four and then you won’t give a shit.

Minjou · 27/01/2026 13:45

I'm not seeing the issue, what's wrong with it being in a can?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/01/2026 13:46

Honestly it’s fine Op. as others have said, you get a plastic cup.

Ive only had the rose because it’s what I tend to go for if not having food ,but that’s totally fine.

I can't work out how to link from YouTube but look up Marcel Lumont "Wine In A Can". Brilliant!

Redpeach · 27/01/2026 13:48

Would you drink out of a metal tumbler?

CollieModdle · 27/01/2026 13:55

Why would it be cold, just because it is on a can?

Many theatre bars are tiny. Cans take up far less space and can be stacked. Are lighter to dispose of, etc. And because of all this are probably cheaper to buy in bulk. Cans are a much better way to sell individual ampunts of wine. Lots of the small bottles on sale in supermarkets are plastic.

Why would it be cold? I really don’t understand why you think that because it’s in a can, then it must be cold.
It’s red wine. It isn’t served cold.

Beekman · 27/01/2026 13:58

If the thought distresses you that much then don’t have one

This. This is good advice.

Sounds ok to me.
