Why is the wine in a can?🤮

I’m going to the theatre tonight, I haven’t been out in the evening in over a year or had much time to myself so it’s a treat. I looked up the menu to see if they do small tubs of ice cream (they doGrin) and I saw that the wine they sell is in cans 🤮I could almost understand a cold can of white wine but WHO would enjoy a can of red wine? I totally understand not using glass, I get the issue with plastic (although reusable plastic cups might be an idea?) but even a paper cup would be better. Has anyone had one (particularly red) and how was it? I couldn’t drink red wine like a can of coke, is it cold??

Thanks for linking this. Absolutely brilliant!

I remember similar disdain for screw tops on wine bottles.

I bought several for my OH as stocking fillers at Xmas because I don’t drink wine and he likes an occasional glass- a bottle would be too much for him and most would get wasted. I know you can buy miniature bottles but the range of what you can get is limited. I found a great variety of cans in Waitrose and M&S and felt reassured that they must be ok if those two retailers were selling them! DH says they’re really nice.

I love Marcel Lucont - would love to see him live.

capybaraforlife · 27/01/2026 14:46

If one of the reasons for the can is sustainability/recycling; isn't it a bit contradictory to also hand over a plastic cup 🤪

wishingonastar101 · 27/01/2026 14:55

I don't like drinking out of cans but can wine in a plastic cup is fine... it's normal wine.

LowdermilkPark · 27/01/2026 14:58

I’ve had wine from cans on flights. Perfectly fine.

  1. cans are recyclable and a better choice than the single portion plastic bottles
  2. serving in single portions means less wastage in a theatre setting where the bar isn't in regular daily use like a bar or restaurant
  3. each can is fresh
  4. usually with a canned alcoholic drink you're offered a paper cup or reusable plastic wine glass
  5. very few, if any, theatres would allow glass into the auditorium now as a safety issue and for clearing up
  6. wine is often served in cans on trains or planes, they're easy to transport, I'd guess it's lighter to transport in cans than bottles
  7. theatres are just trying to do their best, audiences behave worse now than pre lockdown, numbers are down but rudeness is up
  8. you'll have a lovely time, you can go to a bar after the play, or before the play if you're not a fan of whatever wine is on offer during the interval (if there is one) and pre show
  9. it will only be cold if it's kept in a cold place
FrostyPalms · 27/01/2026 15:00

Another one not understanding why you think that because wine comes in a can it must automatically be cold!

This is why I buy cans of wine. We don’t drink enough to finish a bottle.

I love wine in a can.

Me and my friends drink them when we're going on a night out in London.

We call them 'Train tinnies' or 'Journey juice' 😁🍷

Ha! You’re my kind of theatre companion.

PinterandPirandello · 27/01/2026 22:09

They do a nice canned Mirabeau Provence Rose. I like them as, when I open a bottle, I only ever drink a third to a half and prefer it freshly opened so they work for me. Nice to take into the cinema or on a trip.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 27/01/2026 22:09

They give you a cup. It’s because they don’t want glass that people can drop and smash in the theatre because to clean it up and ensure safety/treat injury would disrupt the whole show.

FrodoBiggins · 27/01/2026 22:11

How was your tinny OP?

ArseSkinForAFriend · 27/01/2026 22:23

They're also really good for cooking bolognaise or anything in a red wine sauce.

Drink 3 or 4 and you won't give a shit how the dinner turns out.
