cause he is Jewish

Apologies cant see a thread about this.
Staff at Bristol Brunel academy blocked a visit by Damien Egan, their local MP because he is Jewish. Clear case of antisemitism. AIBU to thinking that headteacher and those driving this decision should be sacked and reported to the Teacher Regulation Agency?
(Apologies thread title isnt correct, but i can't edit it)

His visit wasn't stopped because he is Jewish, and this entire thread is disingenuous in framing it in that way.

He isn't just 'part of' Labour Friends of Israel'; he is the Vice Chair of the organisation, and it paid £2.5k for him to go on a trip to the United States last year.

LFI is funded by the Israeli state (which is in turn funded by the US), in order to influence the way that British politicans (incl David Lammy and many others) vote, and the kind of speeches they make and questions they ask in parliament. He has never recognised what's happening to the people of Gaza as genocidal, or spoken up about the actions of Israeli settlers on illegally occupied land in the West Bank.

There are people in Israel (such as B'Tselem) who have been critical of the Israeli government's actions, but it's very rare that anyone from LFI represents those Israelis' views. There are also plenty of Jewish people around the world who have been campaigning for many years for justice for Palestinians, and it's anti-semitic of you to say that Jews can't or don't speak up about injustice and human rights abuses.

I've met Damien Egan (when he was Mayor of Lewisham). He was pretty obnoxious, arrogant and careerist back then (and only converted to Judaism in 2018 when he met his current partner btw), so please don't pretend that the teachers in Bristol only objected to his visit because they were 'racist'.

This is just another slur. I’m sure MPs get loads of people not liking them. They should still be able to turn up and speak about their job.

Humdingerydoo · 14/01/2026 19:43

LFI have spoken up about illegal settler violence many times. I even posted a quote from their website about it earlier.

If he was a Catholic MP no one would have thought to check any possible links he may have to Israel. That's what makes it anti-Semitic.

If he had still been a Catholic, but was also Vice Chair of LFI, this would have been common knowledge. Nobody would have needed to 'check' anything!

Kingscallops · 14/01/2026 19:48

It is common knowledge about his being Vice Chair of LFI so no need for anyone to check anything.

Lots of people don't agree with the contested assessment that Israel's retaliation in Gaza for technically counts as being "genocide". That is an emotive word which suggests ONE particular motive, that hasn't, as far as we know, been proven as it has in other motivations (like "killing Jews" a la Hamas). That also doesn't mean we "support" the level of the retaliation on the Gazan people(any more than people necessarily support the bombing of Hiroshima), and it also doesn't mean all people who think so support Netanyahu. Are you seriously suggesting we all be banned from public life as well for not agreeing with your skewed perceptions 100%? And you're seeking to police what we're allowed to think about that, are you?

The Friends of Israel AND this MP advocate for, as we have pointed out with what they actually say rather than your hyperbole, a two state solution and HAVE openly spoken out against the actions of Israeli settlers in the West Bank.

And you're accusing others of being disingenuous? Still trying to understand exactly why you think that a mob of gullible teachers and parents who chose to create active risk for their kids by "protesting" a Jewish MP coming to their school to speak about HIS JOB are doing something remotely righteous and will achieve anything except intimidation for Jewish people?

You and your pals on here seem to be projecting. Which seems like another lazy propagandist tactic from activists with no integrity whatsoever. Perhaps you could try to get some instead? Develop some coherent principles, maybe? If you had some perhaps you wouldn't have to lie all the time.

People here can actually read. You do know that, right?

What exactly do you find objectionable about LFI? Is it that they want a two state solution? That they don't think Hamas should govern Palestine because Palestinians deserve better? That they condemn illegal settler violence and criticise the Israeli government for encouraging it?

It's bizarre. All such tactics do is demonstrate to the public that such "activists" have nowt but shit, unevidenced arguments and hyperbole.

And yet we're all supposed to agree that they're righteous and the good guys in some way and capitulate to their accusations, join in with their bullying of any random person and capitulate?

Imagine "gaslighting people and telling lies" being all of your "activism".

As a poster said above. It's utterly pathetic.

Nah.

I would think it's even worse when you're gaslighting your own people! What a stab in the back that must feel like. That's if everything is to be believed, of course.

Do I have to do everything?

From the LFI website: LFI does not receive any money from the Israeli government or the Israeli Embassy, nor does LFI make donations to Labour MPs. Labour MPs who participate in LFI delegations to Israel and the Palestinian Territories declare the value of those trips to the Electoral Commission and in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests. This information is publicly available and it is in line with the practice adopted by other similar organisations.

Egan did indeed go on a funded trip to the US last year as part of a delegation to meet with US politicians and civil servants and attend the AIPAC Congressional Summit (aka The Zionist World Congress if you're a JVL member or an antisemite). Politician goes on political trip to meet other politicians with common interests and discuss politics. Using a donation, not claimed as an expense. Scandalous, someone should put a stop to that.

Do you think politicians shouldn't be making speeches and asking questions in Parliament? Or maybe only from an approved list of topics? According to an approved set of beliefs and values? Only on behalf of a homogenous group of people?

So far, this thread has been a disappointing experience of the fact checking and research skills of journalists, political advisors and the ill informed who all have access to a multitude of search engines.

threatening to wear keffirs

I assume you mean keffiyehs, and they can't hurt you.

But wearing a keffiyeh makes a political point, a point which is anti-semitic. I would want any teacher who wore one subject to a disciplinary hearing because they are not supposed to bring their political opinions into school and political indoctrination in schools is illegal. Were they demonstrating on behalf of Israel I would say the same, btw. even though I stand with Israel.

Keffiyehs have been worn by useful idiots who can't even spell the name of the garment correctly. They don't care about its origins, only about keeping up with the latest fashion. Absolutely cringeworthy.

therefore supporting Palestine = anti semitism?

its an arabic word what makes you think there is a correct way to spell it in English 😂

Kingscallops · 14/01/2026 22:42

There might be a variation on the spelling but you're giving useful idiots far too much benefit of the doubt. They would have to know its origins to gain back any credibility. Not just wear it because it's the latest trend. @dailyselling

I asked you first.

But I don’t believe children are "at risk" every time some bully makes a threat about what they will do if they don’t get their own way. If that were the case, every bully coukd get their own way about everything.

So no, you didn't ask first.
