Is DH trying to kill me?

Sam9769 · 06/01/2026 18:44

DH was cooking dinner tonight until I walked into the kitchen and saw that he was defrosting the fish on the RADIATOR!
When I asked him why he was doing this and not using the microwave to defrost it, he said "Oh it's fine, it's been defrosting for the past two hours, I'm just finishing it off on the radiator!"

AIBU to think that he is trying to kill me?

Wut.

Did you marry a teenager?

Is he high?

I wouldn't eat that fish if I were you

Dude needs to research basic food safety, he's going to harm someone.

HolidayBrochure · 06/01/2026 18:48

😂 Maybe? I think you’ll be fine however

ExpectZeroContext · 06/01/2026 18:49

Yes, he is trying to kill you.

CaitieCat · 06/01/2026 18:56

Well no, he shouldn't be defrosting it on the radiator but I can't imagine fish having been defrosted in the microwave would be edible either.

LardoBurrows · 06/01/2026 18:56

No, you are just, unfortunately, married to a man who is a bit thick.

Hope he is rich or good in bed to compensate for the lack of brain cells.

Lmnop22 · 06/01/2026 18:57

I mean, leaving food out in a warm kitchen to defrost is fine so not overly concerned about the radiator as long as he intends to fully cook the fish to the right temperature after 🤷🏼‍♀️ if you’re having sushi, run - he is trying to kill you. Maybe I’ve watched too much of that death cap mushroom documentary on Netflix though…..

Ajakka · 06/01/2026 18:58

How often does he cook? Was it a strategic incompetence thing to get out of cooking?

vanillalattes · 06/01/2026 18:58

Why is defrosting it on the radiator worse than in the microwave or in the kitchen?

I mean, I wouldn't do it, but I don't see why it's dangerous.

Hotter for longer - means maximum bacterial growth and production of toxins/histamine.

Microwaving is very quick, so they don't have the opportunity to multiply before it's cooked, in the kitchen is cooler (especially at the moment and if it's unheated).

Ideally, it should have been defrosted in the fridge or at most, sealed in a bag and placed in cold water.

JudyMoncada · 06/01/2026 19:16

I have an Aga. I regularly stick things on the warm plate to defrost. No one has died yet.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 06/01/2026 19:16

When he's cooking it on the radiator you really need to start panicking.

ladygindiva · 06/01/2026 22:42

I thought you could cook fish from frozen anyway

QuickPeachPoet · 06/01/2026 23:07

your house will stink if he does that. And it's not very hygienic.
Tell him to put it in a freezer bag and a bowl of cold water.

purplecorkheart · 07/01/2026 00:12

Defrosting the fish is grim. Yuck, imagine if some of the fish water gets on the heater, you will be reselling it for ages every time the heater is put on for a while Confused

ByKeenBlueHelper · 07/01/2026 00:59

🤣🤣🤣 guess he has life insurance out on u

purplecorkheart · 07/01/2026 01:02

Re smelling even!

Catpuss66 · 07/01/2026 01:13

Called weaponised defrosting……so he doesn’t have to do it again.

UncannyFanny · 07/01/2026 01:18

I think he’s trying to kill the fish

suburberphobe · 07/01/2026 01:26

Well, considering how many women are REALLY killed by men/husbands,

Your OP is in poor taste.

IsabellaGoodthing · 07/01/2026 08:19

Could be smelly and could defrost unevenly but leaving it on the radiator for a short time won't kill you. Its more likely to cook through in 2 hours if your radiator is hot.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/01/2026 08:21

Fish should be defrosted at room temperature or in a bowl of tepid water surely in that time? What was it? A whole tuna?

Moonlightfrog · 07/01/2026 08:25

I don’t see how it makes any difference if it’s defrosted on the radiator or the microwave, both ways are incorrect. Meat and fish should be defrosted slowly at room temperature? That being said, fish is perfectly fine cooked from frozen if cooked well.

I usually defrost fish in Luke warm water or under a running tap.

No one is going to die 😉

chunkyBoo · 07/01/2026 08:34

Bacteria takes many hours to divide, so if it’s on the radiator for a short time it should be fine. It’s unconventional of course, and yes smelly 😵 but shouldn’t kill you

BitOutOfPractice · 07/01/2026 09:35

I think it’s hard to defrost fish in the microwave as it starts cooking if you look away for 10 seconds. Easier to get it out and defrost it at room temp.

Luckyingame · 07/01/2026 10:02

No, I don't think he's trying to kill you.
I think he's fucking clueless and care free, though.
