Is DH trying to kill me?

Sam9769 · 06/01/2026 18:44

DH was cooking dinner tonight until I walked into the kitchen and saw that he was defrosting the fish on the RADIATOR!
When I asked him why he was doing this and not using the microwave to defrost it, he said "Oh it's fine, it's been defrosting for the past two hours, I'm just finishing it off on the radiator!"

AIBU to think that he is trying to kill me?

I think both of you seem to have missed food tech lessons at school and need to do some research.

InterestedDad37 · 07/01/2026 10:09

Tell him the packet says "stand in cold water for 2 hours" and that he actually has to do that. Holding the fish, on a plate.

beAsensible1 · 07/01/2026 10:11

If it’s plastic just put in a large bowl of water. Cold water. Microwave defrost doesn’t work and grim

I would never defrost fish on a radiator or in the microwave. Chefs tip put the fish in a zip lock bag and put in a sink of cold water change the water every 10 mins should only take 20 mins. It's faster and safer. I have defrosted whole joints of beef.

Bacteria takes many hours to divide, so if it’s on the radiator for a short time it should be fine. It’s unconventional of course, and yes smelly 😵 but shouldn’t kill you

Everything he does is unconventional!

When he's cooking it on the radiator you really need to start panicking.

I panic quite a lot with the strange things he does!

Well, considering how many women are REALLY killed by men/husbands,

Your OP is in poor taste.

You need to lighten up!

Is he related to Mr Strange, the Milky Milky man from the 90s TV series Punt and Dennis (who stored milk on his radiator)?

Hankunamatata · 07/01/2026 20:40

If it was still frozen though would it really be breeding ground as core temp would be lower.
If it was completely defrosted and sitting there for a while a different story

My husband will leave chicken breasts out in the sink ALL DAY LONG whilst at work to defrost. They're usually room temperature and have been for about 4hrs+ by the time he cooks them. Im still alive to tell the tale but I do think he's trying to kill me off slowly too.....

DuchessofStaffordshire · 07/01/2026 20:54

I'd commend him on his use of initiative, and food preparation is a learning experience. In all honesty the fish would probably be fine. My biggest concern would be it leaking and having a fishy smell lingering for eternity.

I have an Aga. I regularly stick things on the warm plate to defrost. No one has died yet.

I do the same. 32 years. No problems. Fish, chicken frozen meals. Works well.

BunnyLake · 07/01/2026 23:24

Most frozen fish can be cooked from frozen, in fact I’ll be doing just that tomorrow for dinner.

Aye you married to my husband?! As students I told him he needed to soak dried kidney beans for X hours minimum yet he still put them in our dinner … soaked for probably an hour max … I’m luckily still alive 30 years later
