When to take the tree and decor down?

EvAdA · 27/12/2025 23:04

DP and I moved in together this year and we have reached our first major disagreement. We put the decor and tree up around the start of December, earlier than he would have liked admittedly. We are done hosting for anything Christmas or New Year related. On Monday we go skiing then to his family for a few days and won't be home again until the 7th. I have work to do on the afternoon of the 7th and all day on the 8th, he is self employed so more flexible.
He believes decor shouldn't come down until after the 6th (epiphany) and we can either do it on the 7th or on the weekend after. I think as we are done hosting and won't even be here we should take them down tomorrow, do a nice deep clean and come back to a fresh home ready to enjoy the New Year. He claims that is fighting his culture and we should leave them up, he put them up early for me etc.

AIBU to want them down before we go?

In your household, your traditions shouldn't take precedence over his.

DP is Italian, he says that in Italy or atleast his area very few would take them down before Epiphany which is celebrated in its own right and is a national holiday.

My friend is Italian. Tree comes down on 12th night with a celebratory dinner that evening.

Eenameenadeeka · 28/12/2025 07:33

It's a significant and important cultural date to him, and he's already compromised for you. Your argument is just convenience. I can't see why you'd even argue, I'd let him leave it up.

Nothing gets taken down til after we celebrate the New Year. Nothing.

Toastersandkettles · 28/12/2025 08:18

Ours went up 7th Dec and will come down 2nd Jan. I go back to work 3rd Jan and the DCs back to school on the 5th.
It's sad to see so many trees already down around our neighbourhood. Christmas Day is just the start of Christmas, not the end!

Squirrelblanket · 28/12/2025 08:39

I'm taking mine down today. I like the house to feel fresh and tidy for new year, and I'm not religious.

In your case I would leave them up as it's important to your husband.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 28/12/2025 08:41

We leave ours up until mid Jan. We love the tree, No rush, it brings hoy to the darkness.

itsthetea · 28/12/2025 08:43

Ours may come down around the 6th or may stay up a little longer but that’s what we agree

6th is traditional in the UK

in yiur case I might take them down before you travel

however you are being unreasonable to need a nice deep clean to enjoy your new year

why cant they stay up and he takes them down and cleans when you are back at work on the 7th?

pilates · 28/12/2025 08:53

I’m with you op but I’m not religious. Mines coming down the day after tomorrow and a good clean.

itispersonal · 28/12/2025 08:56

In your situation I think you should leave them up until you get back off holiday!

Mine will be coming down on Tuesday before the new year - not religious, Christmas for me is the month of december (that’s when we do our celebrating, building up to Christmas Day and ends on Boxing Day) and not the 12 days of Christmas for me!

OneOfEachPlease · 28/12/2025 09:00

On the fifth, the eve of epiphany. I find it really weird now that social media makes everyone put their trees up in October but take them down when people are still actually celebrating Christmas.

Anyway, that’s all irrelevant! Because he’s given you a really important reason to keep it up.

Fernsrus · 28/12/2025 09:09

Mine comes down on 5th, but it wasn’t put up until the 20th, so around 2 weeks.

Septemberstar6 · 28/12/2025 09:12

I often take it down on new years day. But mine is actually coming down today this year. Me and husband haven't had much headspace for Christmas this year due to various reasons so both of us are ready to move on. You can take it down whenever you like but I suppose the issue is, you aren't in agreement.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 27/12/2025 23:56

Goodness, how long did it take? Mine will be removed and put away in 20 minutes, on the evening of 5 January.

It took the whole afternoon. But that includes getting the empty boxes back out of the loft and then putting it all away in the loft as well as a full clean of the rooms afterwards. Most of our baubles are vintage glass ones so they all need individually packing. We have decorations in most rooms as well as static cling on snowflakes on the windows at the back which took a while to take off and carefully put away.
the lights outside are still up though. They won’t take long to take down.

Mine takes half a day

herbalteabag · 28/12/2025 09:57

I always take mine down on the last acceptable day. It's a real tree and I want the most out of it sitting there looking pretty!

Frenchfemme · 28/12/2025 10:05

Mine stays up until Imbolc/Candlemas/Chandeleur (2nd Feb). Something to brighten dreary January. My tradition is that it doesn’t go up until the week before Christmas, in time for the Winter Solstice. I have only myself to please, but if sharing your life with others, I believe their views should be taken into account.

awrbc81 · 28/12/2025 10:19

We’re back in work/school on the 5th so will take them down next weekend, I rarely have them up until 12th night but always after new year.
We don’t like them up too early either, was 14th Dec this year.
I generally agree with your partner but in your specific circumstances I would take them down the day before you go skiing because it will be horrible to come home to them still up on the 7th and have to take them down after work.

GrealishGoddess · 28/12/2025 10:21

Keen to do it soon. Tree is a sad sight after Boxing Day. Time to move on folks

Meadowfinch · 28/12/2025 10:25

I go back to work on the 5th so everything will be cleared and hoovered on the 4th.

But not something I could get too emotional about. It doesn't really matter either way.

Crunchymum · 28/12/2025 10:33

Usually the weekend after New Year's day (depending when NYD falls)

Our tree is looking a fucking mess though and I'm getting annoyed looking at it. It's a beautiful, massive real tree but is so crispy and droopy it doesn't even look pretty anymore.

Can't bring myself to put it out before NYE but it will be down first thing Thursday.

I guess we've had the heating on a lot more this year as usually the tree lasts a good month +. Ours went up 6th December.

Pineapplewaves · 28/12/2025 10:42

The decorations should come down by 12th night (the evening of 5th January) not afterwards, if you are going away before 12th night and will be returning after they should come down before you go away. Can you compromise and keep them up until the day before you leave. I think it would be depressing to come home on 7th, it’s all still up and it’s another job you have to do in addition to the holiday washing and the return to work.

Well then of course it stays up. I know in Spain Epiphany is when they get all their prezzies; it's a big deal. You need to respect his traditions.

PumpkinPie2016 · 28/12/2025 10:52

I would leave it up as it is important to your husband and he compromised on putting them up early for you.

I will take mine down on the 3rd or 4th because I am back at work Mon 5th and my job is manic so I won't want to have to do it once back.
