Grossed out by MIL

C0rner · 27/12/2025 20:55

Don't tell me this is reasonable - my MIL has just used my kitchen scissors to trim her fingernail. She has done it over the cutlery drawer, leaving the cut off part of her fingernail to fall into the drawer, and then she's put the scissors back 🤢

YABU - this is totally normal behaviour
YANBU - gross!!

urgh - did u say anything??

LemonLass · 27/12/2025 20:58

You know what to buy for birthday or next Xmas- pocket manicure set. Vile! Either point out the piece of nail or deal with it?

JDM625 · 27/12/2025 21:03

What did you say? Its something my MIL would do!

-Mine speaks with her mouth full of food and spits bits out across the table
-Allows her dogs to lick between her toes and on any bleeding wounds on her body without stopping them
-Doesn't use toilet paper, wash her hands nor flush when she visits.
-Uses 1 cloth per week. It dries plates/cutlery, cleans spills off the floor, it gets wiped over the bench tops, removes mud from the dogs paws and is an all round germ fest.

I was too in shock to say anything. I couldn't believe she was doing it!!

I've removed the scissors but had to feed the baby before I could hunt around for the nail. Will look for it later 🤢🤢 I couldn't be more pleased that they are leaving tomorrow.

She's not quite as bad as your MIL. In general, she is quite well turned out. But she does do your last point. She uses the same tea towel/hand towel into the kitchen for ages, and she wiped down our counters with the kids dirty cheeky wipes that I'd cleaned their faces/hands with.

eeeeew - very grimy behaviour. have you rescued the manky bit of nail from the cutlery and put the scissors in the dishwasher ?

Sorted the scissors but will tackle the nail when the baby is asleep

@JDM625 excuse me but what do you mean by she doesn’t use toilet paper this can’t be what I am thinking ?

Itsmetheflamingo · 27/12/2025 21:10

I don’t think it’s that bad tbh. You can easily just pick up the nail and dishwasher the scissors. It’s not nice to tidy up after anyone, but I don’t think it’s that gross.

MrTwisterHasABlister · 27/12/2025 21:13

The use of the scissors wouldn’t bother me - they can go in the dishwasher - but cutting over the cutlery draw and not clearing it up is pretty awful.

I'd be counting down the hours until she leaves.

I honestly don't closely follow my MIL's toilet habits and can only hope she uses it for number 2? DH and I renovated and lived in a caravan with a plumbed in toilet. We'd go outside if MIL needed the toilet, because the caravan had absolutely no sound proofing. Even from outside, you could hear if it wasn't flushed or if the sink hadn't been turned on. When I'd next go inside, there was no toilet paper in the pan.

We now live in the house and can still hear there is no flush nor washing of hands. MIL grew up in the UK, not somewhere with no toilets/plumbing. Unless she does use toilet paper and takes it home with her 🤷‍♀️

CalzoneOnLegs · 28/12/2025 09:07

@JDM625 uuuuugh - and then touching everything in your house.

What do you mean that your MIL doesn't use toilet paper? Not even after a poo? That's so insane. Is there something wrong with her? She's be barred from my house and I wouldn't ever go to her house. It must be like a plague pit.

Thundertoast · 28/12/2025 10:34

My mothers partner openly burped, farted, and later told noone to go upstairs because it was a 'warzone' up there while chuckling his arse off, and made further references to how he must have eaten something rotten. Made worse by the fact he never bothers to clean up his toilet skids or make the bathroom more pleasant for the next person, despite the fact there has been for their entire relationship, bleach, a toilet brush, an air freshener and a window in the toilets in their home.
I DONT WANT TO KNOW. And noone rush to tell me that its just like that in some families, as he will do it in front of guests, and he has somehow not noticed in all of these years that none of us do it? My mum will make sarcastic comments about how noone needs to know this information, but its not bloody enough.

Sorry - just wanted to get that off my chest!

EBearhug · 28/12/2025 10:35

I would offer her the nail clippers I got in my Christmas cracker.

But I would also point out nail clippings should go in the bin (ideally the bathroom bin, with no one to witness the clipping, or at least not me.)

Toilet paper not an issue if she uses water instead, but I infer that is probably not the case, especially if there's no handwashing or flushing.

thepariscrimefiles · 28/12/2025 10:30

NNNOOO! She has her own house thank goodness.

Driftingawaynow · 28/12/2025 10:43

🤮

EnglishRain · 28/12/2025 10:50

That’s grim. If I was at anyone else’s house I’d ask if they have a nail file or clippers and would use it over the bin. If they didn’t I’d ask do I could use the scissors and do so over the bin and either hand wash them or dishwasher them.

At home if we are due a hoover I might not bother to do it over the bin if I was filing and had a lot to file.

CalzoneOnLegs · 28/12/2025 10:53

@Thundertoast its horrible, but I admit to ‘warzone’ making me 🤣

Oh, i would also find it very funny if say, my partner said it as a one-off during a period of illness or something, but when you are faced with said sights and smells of said warzone and its not your partner it doesnt quite have the same humour 😆

CalzoneOnLegs · 28/12/2025 11:02

@Thundertoast i see, I’m sorry ! some men seem to think laying Big Kahunas and stinking out the place is a talent, but I get you are fed up with it, hopefully it’s only an annual event !

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 28/12/2025 11:09

Thank you OP, you have made me extremely grateful for my clean-freak MIL.
