The big purple one

It’s not big. It is small and round, it used to be big and oval and lovely and nutty.

Why???!!!!

It was the end for me when they changed the wrappings. No more lovely jewel colours. Future generations will be deprived of a childhood with the green triangle, the gold penny and the purple one.

Makinglists · 27/12/2025 15:24

Don't get me started on the toffee penny - horrible. Soft very mushy and no flavour. Really weird and grim. To be honest having sampled a few they all taste the same slightly orangey flavour - not a treat any more!.

MogsChristmasBoiledEgg · 27/12/2025 15:25

The green triangle also really weird tasting now, I thought ours had gone off!

Sgtmajormummy · 27/12/2025 15:28

Why did it have a hazelnut in it when it was made to look like a Brazil nut???

MaturingCheeseball · 27/12/2025 15:34

They are a miserable disgrace now. The dull weird wrappers and - yes - the ruination of the purple one.

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 27/12/2025 15:37

Oooh don't even... I have FIVE Tins of these at home to get through!! I bought too many and was given too many. How the shitting hell am I going to get through five tins?

Some years you barely get a sniff at the purple one because all your stoopid cousins and siblings got to the tin first. The next year you have five tins to yourself.

Never any in between.

Ah don't worry about it.

Fiver says in a few years they'll bring out a "classic version" and people will go nuts (pun intended!) for it.

Nothing sells like nostalgia.

The purple one used to be a whole Brazil nut. Then a whole hazelnut. Now I hadn't realised they'd changed the shape and wrapper. I stopped eating QS years ago.

RedRiverShore6 · 27/12/2025 15:40

they all look a lot smaller now

MilkyNoway · 27/12/2025 15:43

I am not buying ANY of the tubs next year, theybwere all waxy, tiny, vile little mouthfuls of nothing.

And the putple one made me absolutely rage!! It was my favourite. What the actual fuck have they done to it? Hardly any caramel, the caramel tasted of nothing, the nut was tiny and bland and the chocolate waxy!!

People need to stop buying because they think they can just do this shit with no consequences!!

I know I am over reacting really but it really is annoying!

MilkyNoway · 27/12/2025 15:45

It feels like we are paying more every year for less and they are just stripping our joy away at every angle!

JennyWrenSeven · 27/12/2025 15:47

This is the first year I haven’t bothered buying Quality Street and they were always my favourite at Christmas! The box we bought last year had an odd smell about it, don’t know whether it was the awful new wrappers or not, but just couldn’t get past the smell to enable me to enjoy them!

Saw a post on X with a photo of the huge tins of Quality Street we used to get, when Macintosh produced them! All those bright wrappers, with a bigger variety (including the coffee crème 😩) that really was the chocolate tin of choice at Christmas!

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 27/12/2025 15:50

M&S Big Mix beat sadly reduced Quality St

Bought this year for the first time and think it will be taking over from quality street as the annual purchase. Sad times.

RIP toffee deluxe, noisette whirl, caramel keg 💔

bettyboo9 · 27/12/2025 15:54

Completely agree, I won’t be going there again

Horrorscope · 27/12/2025 15:54

I opened a pack of Smarties this morning. I was soooooo looking forward to them but they weren’t nice at all and certainly not the lovely things I remembered (they were still crunchy but that was the only thing going for them). So I chucked them in the bin and decided to let Nestlè know what I thought — went onto their website and told them their Smarties are now a heap of shite and I’d not be buying them again.

Will probably be doing the same re: Quality Street (and suggesting that they drop the word ‘Quality’ from the name)!

ronswansonstache · 27/12/2025 15:57

We got a tub as a gift for Xmas and the decline in chocolate quality was very obvious. Everything tasted like pound shop chocolate!

And it's TINY!!

pestowithwalnuts · 27/12/2025 16:17

It was the end for me when the wrappers changed.
The shiny wrappers were part of Christmas.. it was like opening a box of jewels.
Then the chocs began to change.
This year I've bought a tin of the lovely ones from marksies

JennyWrenSeven · 27/12/2025 16:34

Just look at the way they used to be 😩

And the orange one isn’t orange flavoured any more!

Most chocolate is getting more expensive, smaller and not as nice (lower cocoa percentage) largely because of poor harvests, in particular extreme weather caused by climate change. But I don’t think if harvests are good for a few years they’ll improve the quality - it’s a one way street of lowering consumer expectations.

EdinaTheConfessor · 27/12/2025 16:45

I’m glad I’m not alone. I do think they still have the vague sense of Christmas about them that other chocolates lack. But certainly not the same as yesteryear.
Does anyone else remember the cracknell? Absolute corker not seen for many a year.

OP posts:
Dragonflytamer · 27/12/2025 16:53

There's just too much demand for cheap and nasty these days. They still sell them in massive stacks.

Dragonflytamer · 27/12/2025 16:57

A tin of quality street costs about the same now as it did the 1980s but in real terms people were paying nearer £20 in todays money. There has to be a massive reduction in volume and quality to make that work.
